Is there something else coming out that they want to beat? I think there was a android powered ipod touch knock off.

Samsung has one in the works. With the impending release of numerous Android tablets to compete with the iPad, I'd to see more companies make 4" versions to compete with the touch.

Wow. Just wow. :O :p I didn't expect it to be the first of september.. :O

I don't actually think they'll release it in stores before sep 5th but who cares it's early! Also I think that after people saw the big step that iphone made with the 4t gen they expect much from ipod touch 4th gen also, so the interest is big huh...

We all have high hopes. It will be very interesting what the forum says after the release. I personally think I will be let down like most. It is difficult (maybe impossible) to make everyone happy. However, it will be a worthy upgrade (at least for me).

I hope it isn't a disappointment either, I was disappointed last year and also, I did not buy.

We should make a big thread or poll called "How Apple will disappoint us on Sept 1?" :)

Make it the most popular thread around with thousands upon thousands of posts over the next seven days. Shout it from the rooftops. Then on Sept. 1, we can point out the correct prediction and make more noise about it.

Then next Sept. we can do the same thing. Then Apple/Jobs, not wanting to have his event shown up, will give us everything we want.

:) :)

As far as the answer to the question, I am guessing no front camera and no Facetime, which I admit flies in the face of all recent evidence.

I really just want a performance upgrade in the form of an A4 processor and the retina display as well. Camera is really not important, but will a be a pretty sweet bonus

True, the ipod will disappoint most people like it always does. However, I am convinced that facetime will exist (which is bad because it will be a big gamble up until the first). Are you optimistic about the chances of the A4, 512 RAM, and retina? That is all I truly want. :D

No. You are wrong. Why there WILL be a front-facing FaceTime compatable camera.

No you are not guessing that. I made this post a while ago.

To convince people who think there will not be a front cam, and to express my views on why there will be. I believe very strongly that there will be a front cam, and here's why: (please pardon spelling and punctuation errors, as this was done on a first gen iPod Touch)

Steve jobs said there will be tens of millions of facetime devices shipped in 2010. There have not been tens of millions of iPhone 4s. AND he said devices, not iPhone 4s, hinting that there may e other facetime compatible devices.

Update: John Gruber (who has a high reliability) said there will be dual cameras (front and back)
and bloomberg has said a bunch that the next touch will have a front cam. And there have been other rumors about it Which I just forget by now.

There have been countless leaked front panels of the next touch. They all show a hole centered in the front. The hole is too large to be a sensor, it is the perfect size for a front facing camera.

In iOS 4.1, there is email based facetime, providing a different method of initiating a facetime call. That means there may be a device without a phone number which is facetime compatable.

iFixit's Kyle Weins checked out iPhone 4 parts compared to the touch. He announce the front facing cam can easily fit in the current touch design.

I did some research and checked out the iSuppli's teardown of the iPhone 4. They reported that the front facing VGA camera was a $1.00 component, so it would defonately be profitable to add, and is possible

Apple clearly loves facetime and wants to promote it. The only commercials for the iPhone 4 are about facetime. If apple really wants to promote facetime, they would add it on to different devices. As to provide greater access, especially to people who don't want to pay monthly data fees.

The iPhone 4 has it. Think about it, the iPod touch has been very close to the iPhone. The only difference has been the phone part (which I don't believe I need to justify) and the camera. They excluded the camera to have a groundbreaking release, and they didn't want to add a crappy 2 mp camera.

Adding a front facing camera would easily put the touch ahead of competitors. No other iPod touch-like device has a front cam. And a front cam in this can do so much, including videochat. Which competetors can not say they can do.

Update: the alleged eyewitness account describes a hole in the front middle. (a camera hole obviously)
even macrumors has embraced it. If you look at the articles, they say how the touch will probably have a front cam (you know, when they need to take up more room and the post has some info on iPod touch, etc.)

Common sense! think about it a front cam makes so much sense in an iPod touch. And look at these reasons! It can be put in, uncostly, it has support in iOS, apple want to promote it, all of this!!!

If this does not convince you, you are obviously very stubborn, OCD, and needs to always get your way.

When I made my last post, I was thinking to myself, 'I hope GregR doesn't hear him saying that...' :D

Alas, 146.166 hours to go... :(

:D :D :D :D
LOL THAT IS SO TRUE. you are now my buddy :p.

When I made that topic, you were the one who replied saying it should be a sticky, so I was surprised you didn't make a reference to my reasonings/post.

So now, let's sit back, relax, and see if I have convinced him...

Um, I really don't need the facetime camera, what I need is a rear facing camera and I will be disappointed if they don't include that especially after last years fiasco. There is a leaked case on macrumors right now with a hole in the back for a camera so at least there is some evidence we might be getting one but everyone was so sure last year and it didn't happen. It will be disappointing though if they don't put a facetime camera, because a lot of other people want that.

I posted on another thread my concern about iOS4.1 not being out yet. Without a released version of iOS4.1, Facetime won't work, since it needs the email based contacts in iOS4.1 currently only in beta. They would need to load the new version onto the new iPod touch presumably in production now or you have a shipping device with a non-functional front camera. Apple won't ship something that doesn't work, so may have decided to pull the feature - "oh well they can wait till next year".

I'm not sure how strong the evidence was for the rear camera was last year compared to that for the front camera this year. My sense is that Apple's going to hold something back to make us come back next year. I'm just trying to figure out what that is. What's the collective groan going to be about when iPod touch is unveiled on Sept 1??

What are the chances?

What are the chances of not being able to find an iPod Touch when first released. I bought my 2nd gen about 6 months after release so had no troubles, but now that I am literally chomping at the bit for the new one I am expecting I am going to have to fight to get one at our local Apple Store.

you know, they could just release 4.1 for ipod touches. when ipads were first released, their OS version was slightly higher before iphones were updated to match
