Sorry to disappoint you all but i REALLY dont think MBP will get a processor update with the 'montevina chip' coming out in June just in time for WWDC it makes no sense to update processor now and then in a few months be behind again.
I think apple will continue to wait it out so they can have the best.

Rubbish.

However they currently don't have the best (Penryn). Besides why not wait for the first quad core processors for a true update etc etc...

Doesn't make much sense, because of the need of an update and because the Montevina probably won't be put into MBP's by the time it is released. I think it could take a few extra months to get them ready - after release.

well think about. they usually update every six months or so. MBP is already an amazing machine for the price and the difference with what they have now and penryn is barely notable. Montenvia comes out in 4 months meaning Apple will be behind for a long time. they arent a huge corparation like Dell that can have always be putting out they latest in technology, so why not wait until Montevia and who knows what else they can come out with by then. Blu-ray if prices continue to fall. that way they can have a real update by WWDC.

Scenario:
Customer walks in to a shop and asks 'What's the most powerful laptop around at the moment?' Sales man responds with 'Well, Sony, Dell and HP have the latest Penryn chips, Apple still using Santa Rosa - last years technology'
It's highly unlikely that Apple would give customers away by skipping Penryns.
Besides-
A) look at the buyers guide, 258 days since the last update (average of 186).
B) MPB stocks are lacking at several retail points
C) Apple need only to fit Penryns in their current design and Penryns are now available en masse.
D) Just look at all the current speculation all over the net. Where there's smoke, there's fire
E) Updating the MPB would be a cheap and easy bit of publicity that Apple could really do with right now
F) Apple have shifted their strategy back to their computers for 2008 and have publicly stated their desire to have several product updates per month.
G) Montevina wouldn't be available until at least August. 400+ days for the current spec?
I think the updates will be here by end of month. If for some reason they don't arrive by end of March, then I concede and agree with you.

You are wrong here. With your way of thinking why not update MBPs in 2 years? Besides check the Buyers Guide. According to that guide you will see that MBP are updated twice a year (every ~186 days). But, if you look closely you will see that there were periods that there was a 9month gap between updates (like today) and some other periods with 3months gap! So history does not agree with you! ;)

Ok you have made some good points there.
but where did u get this info. from? mainly the part where said several product updates a month?
do u mean in general or for each indiviual product?

so far they have updated something every tuesday so this sounds right.

I think there is still a strong possibility that the MBP will be getting an update this month and also one in the summer. Six month is the general rule with the update process but if you look back to 2006 there were 4 updates, with the shorts cycle lasing less then 2 months.
The question for people waiting for the next update is do you now wait those extra months for Montevina……

Definitely tomorrow, definitely MBP tomorrow

they could also just do a minor update now with that, and offer the latest thing in the summer. Only in computers do you see a product get advertised the day it comes out and and not before it comes out. Of course people working for apple are probably reading this and laughing.

At the very least, Apple could drop the Penryn processors into the existing Santa Rosa boards for an interim update. The thought that this wouldn't happen is, as has been pointed out by others, somewhat ludicrous. Is it possible that Apple foregoes any major changes to the MBP until Montevina? Perhaps. But foregoing a simple chip upgrade? I don't think so.

There's also some shortsightedness in these forums when discussing Montevina as the platform upon which the MBP could see a case redesign. For one thing, the MBP case size is not incredibly changeable, as I believe thickness is currently limited by port openings and footprint is currently limited by screen size. Regardless, if I'm Apple and I'm really wanting to do a case redesign, I'm going to forget about Montevina and wait for Nehalem (end of 2008), which will be a far more radical and progressive departure than Montevina.

The gist of what I'm saying is, there is always something new on the horizon, but companies like Apple need to innovate with what is here now, not with what will be here tomorrow. Likewise, we as consumers need to get over our bedwetting about not having tomorrow's technologies and enjoy what we have today... and I'm totally preaching to myself, as I'm waiting for this new MBP to drop before buying one and the anticipation is driving me nuts!

Special Event

If there will be a special event on the 26th, the invitations will have to show up today or tomorrow at the latest... so, tomorrow we can either be happy for new MBPs tomorrow, or look forward to the special event described in the invites... or, neither will happen and then we can all go buy a Sony.

The MBA is the future, but not for a few more years when concerning the MBP. Once all of the pro components can fit into that small of a enclosure, then get back to me.

Yeah yeah, I was kidding :p The MBA is quite useless, at least to me.

Its not just a matter of "fitting the MBP components into the smaller enclosure" dude...
They need to cool them down as well or your sexy little MBA is going to have a half life of 30 minutes. P=V*I
Face facts - the MBA will never be as powerful as the MBP

i was thinking the exact same thing... but i don't see any news reportings about received invites or something:eek:

and seriously, the MBP as it is sure isn't too thick for me. i'm not looking to use machine as thin as a poptart. i want a powerhouse of a laptop that can handle pretty much anything i throw at it - no cutting corners or dropping features just to make it smaller.
