I truly hate the bezel and my main concern is the size for what it does. I think they made it that big to prepare for face id next year. Also I think it is a detractor.

As there is no real alternative- I still ordered the new MBP

Next year prepare to get a flood of huawei xiaomi samsung laptops with notch

Most people here just like to have something to complain about to justify not spending 2-3k on a computer they really don’t need.
Those who have a need for the power understand the basics of screen real estate and that this is a positive over the outgoing model.
I agree.

These laptops, though expensive, are incredibly powerful and aimed purely at that terrible label of "pro" users.

Thats not me. Thats not many, many, many people. Thats not even vaguely the majority of customers.

I always liked to think of myself as a 'pro' user but realised that im really not. Especially with the base level m1 machines being so powerful arguably thats still too powerful for a standard user but its nice to have. Theres just no need to worry about the pro machines.

The notch is fine - without it the screen is a normal size, with it theres a bit extra on top to house the menu bar to get it out the way - seems good to me.

The notch is hidden in many situations so whats the problem?

The M1 12.9 iPad Pro has thin bezels and Face ID (which the MBP doesn’t have).
That iPad has a thicker bezel than the new Macbooks, and is also thicker at that point of the device than the MBP, so thank you for providing support for the other side of what you were going for 😂

I don’t understand people getting angry at the notch, it’s great; apple is giving us more screen space and thinner bezels what’s not to like
I don’t care that much about the notch, but it’s silly to call it “great”. If the computer had Facetime hardware then it would make sense, but as is there is absolutely no reason for the notch to be as large as it is.

I think you are naive in what you are saying. There are many people who are not what you would class as ‘Pro’ users, that are buying the MacBook Pro, even though It’s overpowered for what they do. I can easily count 20 people off the top of my head in my friends & family, that would buy the Pro, but don’t need that much power.

In what world does the iPad Pro have thick bezels, they are thin and it looks amazing.

Maybe you need to re-read what I said, as your post implies you might not have understood what I said.

I said thicker than the new MBP bezels.

Aren't they thicker than the old MBP 16-inch side ones?
Yep. It seems that some people are choosing to ignore/misrepresent facts presented to them, cos they contradict their opinion.

I’m gonna bail on this thread, as it’s getting absurd, as some people are determined to misrepresent things

Is not the notch because of opening Macbook with one finger? The notch is right in this place and for example I do not want to open the display with possibility of scratching the display with nails..

Who cares if it Is thicker than the MBP. The bezels of the iPad Pro are thin, so no notch is needed.

Maybe you should re-read what I wrote, i never said the iPad Pro had thinner bezels than the MBP. It simply has thin bezels.

You’re missing the point, showing you’re still not understanding things.

The point about the iPad being thicker (not the bezels, as that’s not the bit you need to follow as much), means there’s more space to fit the required hardware for the camera, sensors, etc. the MacBook lid is significantly thinner, meaning not as much space to fit the hardware in the same area. Thus, notch.

hopefully that makes sense to you, so you can see the point being made & why your point is illogical.

You’re missing the point here. The bezel of the iPad Pro is thin enough, it looks great. And a far superior look than the notch.

The MBP with the bezels of the iPad Pro would have been perfect.

I just don’t get why they did the notch without FaceID …
Who knows. It's not like they don't have mature Face ID modules or something.
I would be a bit nicer to the notch if that means we can enable triple-factor authentication when using Mac: Touch ID, Face ID and Apple Watch.

I wondered about this too. It's a convenient spot to press repeatedly over many years. I wonder if it factored into the decision. I'd like to think the screen is durable enough to sustain this normal use, but only Apple knows.

Dude I so agree. I do not understand the hate either.

The war on bezels is a just and righteous war. The notch is just one small tool on the long and bloody road to a bezel free world. I for one look forward to the day we destroy the last nanometer of bezel and whole heartedly welcome our notch allies to the front lines where our future is as bright and bezel free as the morning sun!

Amazing how much bootlicking there is in this thread. Oh, benevolent Apple is "giving us" extra space. Phooey.

Personally, I don't like the notch, but I can see the argument for both sides. I don't think Apple cares, though; in my view, their decision to do this was based 20% on engineering-related matters and 80% on brand recognition. Call me a cynic, but I suspect that "giving" customers anything was the last factor they considered. It's fine to like the notch and admirable to take the "glass-half-full" approach, but let's not stoop to deluding ourselves.

I challenge the dissenters to find another laptop on the market right now that has this pixel density, miniLED, 120hz, and 1080p webcam. The Dell XPS that people keep talking about looks great, but it's a 720p/30fps camera (and the built-in display's refresh rate tops out at 60hz, I believe).

Bottom line: If you really dislike the notch, don't buy a new MBP. The only votes Apple tallies are the ones people make with their wallets.

I think the brand recognition thing is a great point and would have been a very big factor in the design choice.

Personally I don't give a **** about the notch, it's never going to get in my way so 🤷‍♂️

It'll give my die hard windows friends a boring new thing to crow about though. So that's something to look forward to.

I like the notch, it seems like a practical solution. I'm a little sad about losing the Touch Bar though — I always liked it. However, these both seem like somewhat unpopular opinions.

Oh, how I wanted to love the touch bar. I really did. I did my best to convince myself that it's great. But after two and a half years it still annoys the hell out of me. I can't wait to get rid of it and have some nice, honest keys.

As for the bezel, I like the thick one that I have right now, because that's an area that I always touch with my thumb when I open the lid. Making it thinner means I'll have thumbprints inside the usable area, instead of having them on a black bezel where I can't see them.

So they can add it in the next revision.

I don't mind the notch myself, but the cynic in me feels like they held back. Then again, I don't like Face ID on my iPad Pro.

Glad to see the touchbar go away, speaker upgrades, better ports, magsafe, and excited for what Apple silicon is doing. There is so much to like.
