Just realised I've been living with a notched Mac for a long time 😂 /S

The notch sucks to need. It sucks to look at.

But it is a necessary evil.

Either we get no notch and thick upper bezel and a maybe crappy camera, or get a notch and get thinner bezels and a way better camera, and a way to hide the notch with fake thicker bezels.

Apple went with the latter. I HATE the notch, but I understand why Apple went that way.

Plus, I think it makes the MBPs even more iconic (even if it's in derision for some).

I'd wait for the real-world tests, but if the M1 release was any indication, this should stop NO ONE from buying this beast of a machine.

The MBP is back.

Having thin edges is nice, but not having a notch. Seriously Apple cannot make it better than Huawei on a 3yo machine ?

Incorrect. I currently use a 2015 15” and have been waiting all year long for Apple to announce these so I can finally upgrade. Get your head out of Apple’s rear.

Again, if you need to go through the trouble of hiding the notch, what’s the purpose of even having it in the first place? It’s just one more unnecessary thing for developers to have to worry about when making apps.
The purpose of having the notch is to house the camera… thought that was pretty obvious. For developers it’s no big deal. All you need to do is check that if your app is in full screen mode, there isn’t anything hiding under the notch. I suspect most developers will implement it pretty quickly. Been doing it with iPhones for years already.

just take a look at your mac right now. There’s a lot of black space above the top of the screen. Imagine if you could shift the menu bar up into that black space, then you’d have that little bit more space on the screen. It seems like an all around win to me without giving up anything.

I wonder how many people here are on drugs. The notch is certainly not great. Someone could argue about having thinner bezels, but the question is if it's worth the cost. For me it's not. There is no benefit at all. At least on the iPhone we get Face ID. I do not hate the notch but I find it a totally unnecessary compromise.

The benefit is you have a camera in the normal spot. Take a look at most thin bezel laptops and they put the camera below the screen. If you’ve ever been on a zoom call with one of these people first of all, you’re staring directly up their nostrils, and second, when they type it’s like there are 8 foot tall fingers attacking them. But no you’re right there’s no benefit to the notch at all…

I am sorry but the camera on my M1 13" MBP is also on the right place, so I repeat my question, what is the real benefit of the notch? There will be people that prefer thinner bezels. I love them too, but I want them without any compromise. The thing is that technology is not that good and the notch is a compromise for as long as the technology is not there. I prefer to have bigger bezels than a notch.

The iPhone notch mostly fits within the MacBook's newly thin bezels. The iPhone has had 1080p front-facing video for years, and it has even MORE sensors packed into that small area.

Don't let Apple gaslight you into believing the notch was necessary here. It was not. In a few years, they will shrink it by 20% and call it a "Revolutionary" achievement.
Would would be their motivation to unnecessarily put a notch into the MB?

The physical size of the 14” is barely larger than your 13”, but has more screen real estate.

Also, there’s been a large amount of people wanting smaller bezels. Apple gave the masses what they want. The notch is a small price to pay for it.

in a year or 2, you’ll see the notch shrink as soon as they can. We’ve seen them shrink the notch on the iPhone. This is no different.

You’re in luck then :) it’s pretty easy to just change the screen resolution so you will have a black bar at the top. Then it will be like you have no notch and bigger bezels. I think most people will gladly take the little bit of extra screen size.

That is the problem. Apple is giving people what they want these days. Where is the Apple that knew what is right and what wrong?

Took them four years to shrink the notch 20%
It’s all down to the technology being available. There’s only so much that can be done.

people seem to have unrealistic expectations that they can make the inside of devices like the TARDIS 🤪

In full-screen mode the extra "real estate" disappears, effectively making it pointless.
Only for apps that haven’t implemented it yet. They go into a compatibility mode. That should change pretty quickly as developers add support for the notch.

For devolopers it’s just a matter of making sure nothing is blocked by the notch then setting an item in the info.plist to disable that compatibility mode. It’s not much work so for most apps it should be rolled out quickly.

The technology will likely not be there for a while. Expect a notch for at least 3-4 years, if not more, before we see both iPhones and Macs go truly notch-less without compromising the camera/face id/thinness of the device.

Sounds like a lot of avoidable messing around for very little payoff.

Did they though? They made it taller.
Took them four years to shrink the notch 20%
...and then make it taller (while making it more narrow, as you say).

There is really no reason to dislike it at all. Unlike on iPhone, it designed not to obstruct content. All it did was allow them to move the menu bar up, giving us even more vertical space. I'm super thankful for that.
