Where's the camera on that? And how do you get MacOS on that computer?

Did they though? They made it taller.

...and then make it taller (while making it more narrow, as you say).

You're being a bit deceptive with the 'making it taller' line, as it's only about 1mm taller, but the width is significantly smaller, 20% of the existing width. Which basically ruins your statement.........

I don’t understand people getting angry at the notch, it’s great; apple is giving us more screen space and thinner bezels what’s not to like

So many images about this same thing (but in different variations). It's so obvious this is all Apple PR.

It IS taller. It's not smaller and it's not the same size. It is taller. I have the 12 and my wife has the 13 and I can immediately see that it's more narrow which helps draw attention that it does look taller also. I'm not saying it's a huge difference, but it's true.

Ahhh good old Nosecam..... good for seeing if someone's got boogers....... 😆

So many people & reviews, etc have slated that thing. It's a crap camera.

It is smaller, lol. Look at the overlay, the new notch takes up less space, even a blind person could tell. It's 9mm narrower, which easily negates the 1mm taller aspect.

If you think it's not smaller, despite it being clear in the image I included, then you're just not worth talking to, as you are being obstinate.

To be quite honest I don’t mind the notch, don’t know why everyone complains about it.

I read through the post and I feel like many people that are attacking the notch are seriously lost their sense of logic or false at math or something.

Here are my defenses for the notch.

1. The 14” has a resolution of 3024 by 1964 px. If we minus the height by 74px then it would be 3024 by 1890 px. Which is 16:10 ratio. Which is the same as it has ever been. And the top part completely disappears when you go in to fullscreen mode. Which means you basically loses nothing in active area! And you actually get a little bit taller active area! Problem solved! Yay! Woohoo!

2. Some suggest Apple should place the webcam somewhere else. And no you do not want that. Some company have tried locate the webcam at the bottom and the angle was absolutely hideous. You double chin would look 2 times bigger than normal at that position. And yours fingers would cover the webcam and look ginormous while typing something.

3. Some say Dell could have thinner bezel while have a 1080p webcam. That camera has average quality. Would you like to have a average quality cam on a 2000$ laptop? Not only that packing more pixels in the same sensor space would make the quality worse. Since the pixel take less light per pixel. Let alone the thickness of the display panel itself. Didn’t you seen iPhone’s camera bump increases every year? Also under display cameras are still bad.

4. Every who said the notch has no purpose if it doesn’t come with Face ID. First, look at the thickness of the lid of any laptop and the thickness of iPhone and iPad before saying anything. And second Please don’t bring up Windows Hello. That module is less secure than Face ID. Search it up if you want to know more. I’m sure the technology isn’t there yet to fit one on a very thin profile or it’s less practical than Touch ID.

Everyone here wish there wasn’t a notch. Me too wish the same. But if I am in the Apple’s feet I would have come to these conclusions and have done the same thing

This is the thing, some people have got a weird obsessive hatred for it, for something that's not interfering with function, and is a minor cosmetic issue.

No one wants it, but most people are rational about it.

Actually, this is incorrect, Apps have the ability to use the area either side of the notch for menu bars, etc, therefore, adding that area back to the total screen space available 😃

I read that article about that too yesterday. But I haven’t seen any official app from Apple take advantage of the top part area by default. I guess they think it’s just too impractical or haven’t updated the apps yet (Apple did named it “ compatible mode” didn’t they). But I wish developers will not take advantage of that extra space in full screen mode since it’s looks fine already. Let’s just reserve that part for menu bar should we?

Apple have only just communicated to developer in the last 24 hours about how they can take advantage, and the devices won't arrive until next week & Monterey isn't out until Monday, so of course you won't see apps using it yet, likely from Monday onwards you'll see app updates.

You could already use the "hide menu bar" feature in macOS and gotten full use of your 16:10 display. In my opinion, the notch is distracting any time you don't have a black menu bar, especially so in Apple's examples.

And you kind of understand why iPhone has a notch, b/c of its small form factor. But in the mbp's, you don't have that same constraint.

Okay.

Yes, because you are smarter than the engineers at Apple. This is comparable to peopel who think they know more than medical doctors who have been practicing for 20-40 years.
Did Apple say there is a technical reason for the notch, or are you just assuming a reason.

I wouldn't even bring the engineers into this. This 100% reeks of the Marketing/Design Team getting ahead of the Engineering Team, and then them having to working within their dumb expectations.

Just based on the amount of chatter about the notch, I think Apple absolutely succeeded in garnering itself a lot of free marketing with the notch. And people are still going to buy it, win-win for Apple!
They'll add a notch to the iMac very soon. Soon TVs will also have a notch and people with "great taste" will enjoy it. Win win.. you know 😆

Which other laptops on the market have a 1080p webcam with thin bezels?

The goal of the new MBPs were to address the biggest issues:
1. Lack of ports
2. Poor webcam in WFH times
3. Bezels that make it look like its stuck in 2014

Apple fixed all of these with compromises. The notch is a compromise. If Apple didn't think the notch was a compromise, and was merely 'branding', why did they reduce the notch on their newest phones?

The M1 12.9 iPad Pro has thin bezels and Face ID (which the MBP doesn’t have).

I only have one question? Will I be able to hide the notch if I choose dark mode? Since the top bar is at the same level as the notch.

Again some people dont realise...the notch is there...the menu bar is part of the of it
Until now, the aspect ratio was 16:10 WITH the menu bar
Now, we have same exact 16-10 FULL 2x native resolution WITHOUT the menu bar....so basically apple took the 16:10 and add to it the menu bar..so its an improvement
