Without meaning to sound like a jerk, I didn't realise that there were such a high percentage of people who couldn't do 1 or 2 push-ups.

There seems to be a great divide: Those who can only do 1 or 2, and those who can do 30+.

I'm in. I wouldn't mind doing pushups every 2 days or so. I'll probably limit it to 3 sets of 30. I wonder if that would do anything.

I did pushups, all types of variations to work specific parts -shoulders, triceps, chest, or altogether- and also by wearing my backpack filled with stuff and trying my best to do as many as possible.

I have done that as well, usually while on vacation. I need to do something, and regular pushups seem too easy without the extra weight.

I can do around 35-40 pushups in a row, and if you give me 3 minutes between sets, I can do two or three sets of 35. Haven't done them in a while, but I just did a set to see how many I could do, and I had to stop at 40. Too full from dinner, and I'm probably not capable of making it to 50.

This sounds like fun. I have stopped running, even though I was going to run all summer. Maybe I can do this, it takes less time.
Start me at 20, and my goal will be 2 sets of 50 a day for a total of 100 per day.

I'm totally in. I need some challenge to get me motivated.

I'm just starting to get back into rock climbing shape, so this is a perfect time for a wee challenge. I'm also having a competition with one of my friends from school...he says that by the end of the summer he'll be able to do half as many pullups as I can. :D

1 minute ago I laid out on the floor by my couch and dropped 32 pushups (I impressed myself)...so my goal will be, say, 80 in one go? I've never done that before, so this might get interesting. I'll take a before pic tomorrow.

You're on Abstract :D

I have more will power in a group setting...I used to teach kids karate classes at my dojo and I'd end up doing 400+ in the spam of 5 hours (no more than 25-50 at a time, usually 10-25) because we used push ups as punishment for loosing at whatever 'game' we were playing (even let the little ones play dodgeball, and to be fair I would do them together with them).

That was 2 years ago...going to see how many I can do out of the blue right now...

Just did 35, I was forgetting to breathe so I think I ran out a bit early :p

I'll aim for 60 by the end of August and 100 by the end of September.

Should we post videos as proof :p Most people have a built in isight right? :D

Oh and since no one bit on the before picture...I will, not sure what kind of pose you wanted...felt kinda weird standing here taking pictures of myself posing so I just left my shirt on and took a picture of my arm ... lol.

@Vader, OutThere, chadi,

Yeah, it's the motivation factor, we're all helping each other man, there's always a little heaven in a disaster area. WS.

B and A photos are optional, we are running on the honesty system ;)

Personally, I'm really looking forward to this.

Both! I'm totally useless. Give me heavy(ish) weights in the gym and I'm fine. But a single push-up? Not a chance, not unless I'm on my knees

Don't feel bad about it, it's a gender thing. Most women don't have the upper body strength that men have. If you want to do push ups you can do them pushing against a wall or the edge of a table. It's still a good work out.

Alternate them. It's great for your body to have a mixture of different exercise routines. I run every second day and do push ups on the other days. This gives my body the chance to recover from one form of exercise whilst still working on another. I find push ups and running go really well together because they work such different areas. :)

I've always been a bit suspicious of running as an exercise. I was under the impression that puts undue strain on the vital organs that get shaken around, and that briskly walking gave the same level of exercise. Was the liver really mean to take hours of sudden deceleration.

I'm reminded of the person who spent hours every day running, when asked why, he said to live 10 years longer. Yeah but those extra 10 years are spent running on the street.

Haha! I run 'cause I enjoy it and I find it a good way to relax and let my puny brain think through what it's had to deal with in the past 48 hours. I run on asphalt and I haven't had any internal organ problems but I have had some knee surgery. The great thing about having dodgy knees is that they act as a fuse so I'll probably never have bad hips or ankles. Nevertheless, I find running to be very therapeutic. :)

In my job we do push ups all the time. I remember when I could do very little.

I know most people are starting out, so go for 30 secs. Take a 1 min break and go again. Do that for how many you want to do. Lets say you want to work up to do 20 in a row, then make sure you knock out at least 60.

Also once you can't do one "normal" push up, drop your knees then knock some out. Make sure when you do that though you weight is still focused up on your chest area.

Do them when you watch TV and every comercial break, knock some out.

Last time I did 82 push ups in 2 minutes.

Ah, so this is going to be based on the number you can do in one set? OK, I'm going to set a goal of 80 as well, although I really don't know how I'm going to do that. :p

I felt pain in my knee several days ago when walking to uni. It started up again while sitting at a desk. I used to get a slight sensation during and after jogging, but I bought new shoes with great padding at the sole, hoping that it would make the situation better. Well.....hasn't quite worked. My new Brooks are great. I had to switch brands, but they felt fantastic. However, it hasn't worked, and they're actually too heavy and make me tired quickly.

I've stopped running for 1 week and plan on stopping for another 2 weeks. But....on second thought.....maybe I'll try again tomorrow. :p

This is a really cool idea. I would join, but I go to the gym every day and do good workouts so I have a feeling the because I'm tired/slightly sore nearly constantly that my number might suffer. Perhaps when things slow down at the gym I'll definitely join!

this is a great thread dogbone, BUT, if you're skinny...no worries dude!

just focus on your core and get ripped. if you are skinny, you are more than half way there. i know you probably don't look at it this way, but you are lucky. pushups, crunches and any other core related stuff would be perfect.

i don't want to take anything away from you're doing, but if you don't do enough 'pull' exercises, no word of a lie, my trainer says you'll develop rounded shoulders b/c one side is more developed than the other. bent over rows and dumbbell pullups are way one to do it.

i was a chubster until 2 years ago and i'm by no means ripped, but i'm alot smaller than i used to be. we do pushups every training session...and rarely repeat the same ones. we do so many types it would make your head spin (at least, it makes mine).

here's a quick link to 3 types:

http://www.military.com/Opinions/0,,Smith_082405,00.html

if anything, you should rotate the types so you don't get bored and so you work different areas (ie. triceps, vs inner and outer).

ps. one more thing: if you are looking to strengthen those arms and make them into 'pipes'......do tricep dips. why? b/c your tricep is the biggest muscle in your arm and if it's big...well, then the arm is big :) plus, it's a good complimentary exercise to the pushup.

best of luck! and as we canadians like to say 'Give' er!' :)

@Keebler

Fantastic info Keebler, thanks for that. Really that's just what I was looking for. Come Monday I'm going to summarise everyones tips and suggestions in the first post for easy reference.

This was meant to be a weakling thread but it appears to have evolved into something better, but the main purpose is motivation.

I'm embarrassed to say it, but 5.
I'm pretty heavy, so it's hard for me to do them.

By back to school (August 31st) I'd like to be able to do about 30.
This is a great thread.

There's really no need to be embarrassed at all. This thread is only about motivation. And building up the forearms is a lot more enjoyable than losing weight because you get really tangible results. If you're not used to it you will get really sore at first but only for a few days. It's a great feeling when that suddenly goes. There's no need to set too high a goal either because as long as you go to your limit you *will* see a result.

But I'll need an indication if you are in, because I don't want to railroad anyone.

oh, opps.
Yeah, I'm in.
