Should we post before and after results?

Sure you can post the before or 'starting' result now or Monday or whenever you want to start. Posting a goal with or without a date is good but optional. It's really enough to just post updates on the start count.

I'll eventually prepare a graph of everyone and put it on the first post. There's no rules on how you want to approach this. A goal does not have to be set, you may just want to see how it goes first. After all the main point is only *motivation* it's not a competition. The winner will not get an ipod.

My arms are noodles now as I type this. I don't work out, but I've always been able to do push ups - I just did 50. But the most I've ever done was just under 100. I'd love to go for 150 and see if I can make it. If I do a bunch of sets every day I might be able to get there by the end of August.

One thing I've always wanted to do was 20 pull ups (fingers wrapped away from you, not towards you) and I've never been able to do that. I could probably do 8-10 right now. That might be good for another challenge.

D

im not a skinny runt, but I'd rather be that than the fat cow I am now.
*goes on floor to see how many push-ups I can do*
17, but I am on painkillers right now, and am pretty gashed and cut up. so I could probably do about 25 normally.

umm... pull ups, nope, not one.
though if I lost this fat stuff on me I could probably do a few.
214lbs less than 6'3" more than 6'2".

It's late, and I just got back from a party. But I'll try.

-tries-

I can do 4.

I'll set my goal for the end of July to be 10.

Anyway, I'm in.

Being a swimmer, I find that I have more core strength than arm strength. Recently I've been weight training on the side before swim practice. I can finally bench 55 and squat 70. :D

The 'girly' kind doesn't count officially, but hey, 10 is a great start, are you in? You could go for 20 in say two or three months.

Yup I'm in. I have to keep working on my shoulder stability thats what hampers my pushup count :(

I did a bunch more yesterday and now my muscles ache :D The only problem is I can't do that many now, but I'm going to try and do over 200 over the course of the day.

Do we need to set a deadline to see how much people have improved?

D

Is it too late to join? If not, sign me up.

I just did 26 press-ups. Woot! :D

My aim is to be able to do 50 rep's per set by October.

i train muay thai and MMA so part of my everyday training are push ups, i can do 55 in a row. i want to get to 75 by the end of teh challenge ....count me in I AM IN.....:)

can t do more than 4 pull ups tho hahaha,, oh well im at 205 lbs and im 5'7 maybe i f i go down to 185 which is the normal weight i fight at i ll be able to get to 75 we ll see, this is exactly what i needed... motivationn...

I used to hit 70 in 2 minutes, but now I'll get tired closer to 10-15. Some days it's 5.

A thought for those of you looking for training ideas - pyramids. If you're real low, try starting at 5, 10, 15, 10, 5. It might take you a while, but that's ok. And don't be afraid to drop to your knees, just be aware in the back of your mind that it's the weak way out (or whatever you have to think to motivate yourself not to drop). Give yourself a 2 second/per pushup in your last set break between sets. If you have a partner, just switch back and forth with the other person, being encouraging. As you get stronger, you'll see improvement. Maybe once every two weeks run a two minute test - as much as you can without dropping to gague your improvement.

Oh, and if you are working on improving, form is more important than completion - if you curve your back, you're wasting effort.

I'm training for the Navy PRT, which I have to take during the first week of September. I believe the absolute minimum is just above forty pushups, with the maximum being ninety-two. I can do around sixty (two minute set) without dying, but it's tough.

I've also been breathing really badly (or not at all) - thanks for the breathing tip, it really has helped.

I'm in. I can currently do 33 in one set and would like to be able to do 60 by the end of August

If you want a serious workout, do this exercise that i learned at camp. Take a deck of cards, and shuffle them up, and flip over a card, and do that number of push ups. A total of 416 push ups by the time you are done. So do a card, take a slight break, then do another card, the key is to not just go straight through, or else you won't get any stamina. As you get better, every time you get a card under say 5 or so, you add the next card to it. Can get very tiring, so allow a good amount of time.

Dogbone- if you really want to build yourself up, you'll need more than pushups to do it. Given your body type (skinny) which is the same as mine, I can tell you it's one hell of a battle. But it IS one you can win. If you want to know more, PM me. I battled the skinny most of my life, it's tough. I takes a major commitment and life change. It's something you should be prepared to commit to forever.

dogbone, who started this thread, can no longer post (that's a private matter, and won't be discussed here). He's sorry not to be able to show you the push up chart he was preparing, to reply to leekohler, or to continue encouraging everyone to accept the push up challenge. He asked me to post a message here rather than leave you all wondering about this thread's status.

If another participant wants to take over tracking everyone's progress and promoting the cause, you are welcome to step forward.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he's alright.

^^^Is he alright? Maybe there's nothing wrong with him. Maybe he was banned. Wouldn't be the first time, although I never know why.

At least he's fitter. :p

I'm around the same. I can do around 40 in one set. I'll likely try for 3 sets of 40 by end of August. I'm going to Japan for 2 weeks starting end of July. :)

Today at tennis camp I had to do 10 push-ups for not getting a first serve in so, under pressure, I already completed my goal. Now I'll aim for 20 by the end of the month.

I usually do sets, like 25 or 30 at a time, 3 or 4 sets in close succession. I hurt my shoulder 2 weeks ago so haven't been doing them, but most days I do (unless I'm doing pull ups or something else).

And these are real pushups, mind you! That means elbows 90 degrees, chest touches the ground!

My last APFT(Army Physical Fitness Test) did 115 in two minutes. I've always been able to max out my pushups and two mile run but maxing out my sit-ups has always eluded me. Damn hip-flexors.
