create the occasional laughable "fifa wants them to do well so the refs throw the game" conspiracy theory just as a joke, but a joke that feels good) and call it "reality" so that they're not so scared of losing their historical dominance of "their" game.

My comment on that actually was a joke completely. The only part of me that wants to see the US do badly is the bit that really doesn't like soccer and quite likes the fact that there's a part of the world where I can go on holiday and find the majority of people think as I do about the game ;)

With so much soccer being played by kids in the US now, it can only get bigger. The problem is that when those kids grow up, do they stay playing soccer or do the best athletes get siphoned off into more lucrative sports (both for college scholarships or for the major leagues) like football(American)/baseball/basketball/hockey so the US soccer team would never have the top athletes in the nation in it?

Why Australia will beat Brazil: Science ;)

That, and because Brazil are a bunch of fat, gyrating nancy boys.
Oh boy that's probably going to come back to haunt me tomorrow morning...

I hope the Aussies win, and not only because you have a Dutch coach. ;)

I like a team with fighting spirit, going for it regardless of the odds. Get those fixed plastic grins of those Brazilians faces, would ya!

Tnx.

Mate, we wouldn't even be here if it weren't for Guus. This World Cup has marked a turning point in Australian Football, we have a competitive team, a half-decent national league that has risen from the ashes of the old unpopular one and people down here are very much behind the Aussies.

Australia winning this game would do amazing things for football here and couldn't hurt it around the world - give all the little nations a bit of hope, I mean, look at Ghana last night, they beat the Czechs in a game where they put everything on the line to win and the Czechs just didn't have the heart or the strength to overcome that. A Brazil win would only maintain the status quo.

GO THE SOCCEROOS!!!!

I bet your not giggling so much at him later today.

I will definitely be giggling when England go out of the world cup on penalties to Germany. But at least they'll be able to watch Australia play Korea in the quarter finals from the comfort of their own mansions, and ruminate on what might have been.

I'm also looking forward to the France v. South Korea match tonight. France have been playing poorly and have a point to prove, South Korea top the group. Could be interesting.

like i said, i didn't really have any doubts about whether you were joking, but i wanted to include your tongue in cheek post in my tongue in cheek post. now that our tongues are in our cheeks (wait...that sounds a bit off), this article sort of cheekily talks about youth soccer in the US and it's kind of funny. http://www.slate.com/id/2142554?nav=wp

oh, and if i didn't already want brazil to lose, and i didn't already like the aussie team's spirit, the support here on macrumurs would totally make me a fan--you guys are great. GO SOCCEROOS!

Yep, even he has got it!

But flopping in soccer is a problem. Flopping is essentially a combination of acting, lying, begging, and cheating, and these four behaviors make for an unappealing mix. The sheer theatricality of flopping is distasteful, as is the slow-motion way the chicanery unfolds. First there will be some incidental contact, and then there will be a long moment—enough to allow you to go and wash the car and return—after the contact and before the flopper decides to flop. When you've returned from washing the car and around the time you're making yourself a mini-bagel grilled cheese, the flopper will be leaping forward, his mouth Munch-wide and oval, bracing himself for contact with the earth beneath him. But this is just the beginning. Go and do the grocery shopping and perhaps open a new money-market account at the bank, and when you return, our flopper will still be on the ground, holding his shin, his head thrown back in mock-agony. It's disgusting, all of it, particularly because, just as all of this fakery takes a good deal of time and melodrama to put over, the next step is so fast that special cameras are needed to capture it. Once the referees have decided either to issue a penalty or not to our Fakey McChumpland, he will jump up, suddenly and spectacularly uninjured—excelsior!—and will kick the ball over to his teammate and move on.

The Portugal side have made a strong presentation and are playing well. Their coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari wants them to "smile" and have fun when they play. Hmmm. Wonder where that comes from? :D

I thought Japan were going to score in the last two minutes but all credit to the referee for his excellent tackle.

EDIT: Ten days into the world cup and Australia are still top of the group. Yay.
It certainly gives Australia solid position. It'll be nice to see them advance to play Italy on June 26. (all subject to projections).

It would suit both Brazil and Australia to get a scoring draw in the next couple of hours now with Croatia and Japan only on one point each after 2 games.

Just heard on BBC radio that someone in the UK lost £400,000 last night by betting that Italy would beat the USA. :D

a guy in ecuador (where i currently live) bet a sizable sum of money for here (i don't recall how much--at any rate, more than he could pay) on poland beating ecuador in the first game. and then he killed himself. :(

I'm watching the Brazil -vs- Australia game on the Spanish Channels. Is Australia supposed to be giving Brazil such a hard time? I thought Brazil was some super good team?

They are.

But like all good teams they are stifled when playing against a team that is organized and defends well.
