ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC will have live coverage, Stateside. The two openers on Friday will be on ESPN2. Can't wait for it to start! :)

"It's not just a matter of life and death it's more important than that"

great quote, by the legend that is Bill Shankly

J-Lo ... same as the last WC, ESPN and ABC will show all the games live between them...personally i'd recommend watching the games on the Spanish channels like Telemundo, the commentary is so much better, and i don't even know the language.

Quick question for folks out there. I was listening to my iPod today and one of the songs on the playlist that came up was the Ricky Martin Cup of Life from 1998. It got me thinking - I really don't remember any of the other Cup Songs™. What were they, and how on earth are they not more well known (at least in the US) than the Martin from France98?

As an aside, I should explain that I keep it because I think the Spanish version really did an excellent job of putting the spirit of the event and the sport (as I remember it when going to games in South America, not really the games in Europe - which make it being the 98 song even funnier) into song. I'm sure there are others that are better, but I can't think of any...

I can think of a couple, i guess. Not really official WC songs but cool nonetheless...

one is by Depthcharge, and is called "Goal". some great commentary samples from when Pelé scored Brasil's 100th goal in the WC.

another i remember quite well is, i think, just a theme song, to the BBC's coverage of the '86 Mexico WC, called "aztec gold".

There was a cool song by "collapsed lung" too, called "eat my goal".

well, my mind's now gone blank...time for beer. :)

Ya, it's the regional flavor in a global setting which would be one of the reasons why songs probably haven't been all that widely adopted. We were living in Colombia in the 80's and the theme for the '86 Copa (Mexico) was "Bienvenidos" and sung in Spanish. I'm sure there were other themes for it depending on coverage from other nations, but the Spanish version is the one we knew and recognized.

boy do i hate those ads, enough to make me never buy another nike product again (not that i buy many anyway)

i mean come on, the fat idiot preaching to us about beautiful football and fair play? waht about his ridiculous lash out at a palace fan? yeah there's some great football in the clips, but ever brasil are guilty of disgusting cheating, Rivaldo was it a few years back?

That 'fat idiot' is a football legend (and I hate man utd)!

The Palace 'fan' he kung fu kicked had purposely run down ten rows of steps to tell him to 'f**k off back to france', which is racial abuse. Now while I don't condone violence, it made for a beautiful photo!

Fully agree, although to be fair he did also think that Crouch was bought just as a goal scorer (despite what the manager who bought him has repeatedly said). So I wouldn't give the cantona opinion my credit when he dislikes his own players ;)

which is racial abuse

Techinically not

I won't disagree it's a fine football song. But the original (and vastly superior) version was released as our European Championship song, so I'm giving New Order the nod when it comes to judging World Cup ditties. ;)

;)

Ahh, that is a good point...

...however, that full stadium rendition (including hte people that sang the song) was.... emotional..
