More impressive to you perhaps, but then you are impressed with England

I'm not impressed with England. I just know a little bit about football. Enough to know that they are not 'crap'.

Spains passing and general play were much better.

What is Aragones getting at here. Is he saying that when the score was 2-1 and it was the last few minutes that Spain had given up anyway? Because that's what it sounds like. Even after Italy stole the match against Australia with 10 seconds to go. Injury time winners are not that rare. If Aragones is saying that Spain gave up (unlike Australia, when Japan was given a goal through a ref mistake) then Spain definitely didn't deserve to go through. Teams should fight to the end.

I dont think he was implying that they had given up... although the translation normally buggers any implication up.

But as I said before..... however irritating this is, and how childish it looks, everyone does it. It is part of the modern professional game to trick the referee in giving you at the very least the benefit of the doubt. Dive 3 times in the penalty area, and you probably get it the 4th time. Simulate an injury, and the opponent probably gets a yellow. The Spanish can't complain about the way the French played against them.
It is irritating and childish. It's like watching gay drama queens nancying around the pitch, which can be fun, but is another genre of entertainment entirely.

I get so happy every time a player gets a yellow card for diving/acting.

The defender was using his strength, I've not said it wasn't a freekick, It was soft and only given because of the dive - it henry had stayed and chased then it wouldn't have been given.

if the italian player hadn't let his leg drag over the australian defender lying in front of him (that is, if he'd lifted it up at all), then it wouldn't have been given.

as an outside observer of the back and forth sillyness between you and dogbone, i'd say you both show your biases pretty clearly. ;)

So what is my bias? (Biased is something I really get offended by)

at this point, both your biases may just be against the other person's opinion. ;)

I've agreed with some of the things he says, but If I disagree with it, which I often do (and to be fair, It is fairly obvious he is fairly new to watching football) then I have to disagree. However, this is a thread about the world cup and I've got nothing against Dogbone at all. I think we are debating rather than at each others throats.

Baked Beans, whatever team game or sport, you make the best use of your resources. if the other side are faster than you, you try to get a yard headstart, if they are stronger than you you use their strength against them. France were probably "inferior" to Spain in certain respects, old men and all that, but with tactics, they blew the flashy exciting racehorse Spanish out the water. Boys against men? He cant run as fast as them but Zidane completely wrong footed some of the speediest defenders in the business. Overall, the French played a better game. Entertainment is not the name of the game, soccer is a results business. 3-1, the best team in that match won easily.

Next round starts Friday... my picks:

Argentina vs. Germany (Friday, 11 AM EDT) = Germany
Ukraine vs. Italy (Friday, 3 PM EDT) = Italy
Portugal vs. England (Saturday, 11 AM EDT) = England
France vs. Brazil (Saturday, 3 PM EDT) = Brazil

in general, i agree that a team can play poorly and still win. or play well and lose (i'd like to think that my own soccer teams play well and lose fairly often)... however, in a professional match, a 4-0 win, even if it's simply off 4 counter attacks that strike gold... i'd have a hard time saying that the team with 0 goals played better. they *gave up* 4 goal scoring counters! and as we all know, it's not easy to get a counter attack to gel perfectly. so to do it 4 times (or even 3....?) in one game, shows some good amount of play. sure, there's some luck, and some responsibility on the defense for letting it happen... but i'd say that any team that wins 4-0 (i'm sure there are exceptions) played better.

Argentina vs. Germany = argentina 3-2

this game could well be the game of the tourney. assuming germany comes to play. argentina's young guys are a lot of fun to watch, so i'll definitely be into this game.

Ukraine vs. Italy = Italy 2-0

i want ukraine to win, but italy will dive at all the right moments (because they'll be diving the whole game, so they're bound to get luck on it a few times), and play good enough defense to win.

Portugal vs. England = England 2-2 penalties

not much to say. england has shown they can get a goal or two in a game, but portugal is dangerous too. portugal may lose in overtime or even regular time with their players missing and such.

France vs. Brazil = Brazil 3-1

i think brazil will have to hit their stride here or risk an upset, but if they do they can probably control the game and get a few great goals

Thanks for the lesson billy... you might want to go back and read a few of my posts that tell dogbone the same thing.

In results terms the Spanish and the Aussies are on a par, ergo the Australians have come a long way very quickly, and so maybe some observers learn quicker than others too ;)

Okay. My good deed for the week. I know by the telling of it, I lose what any altruistic points there might have been toward being nice, but I traded my lecture period (which was scheduled for today, to tomorrow) with a friend who is from Argentina who took my slot today so he could watch Argentina vs. Germany, tomorrow. So, I won't get to see the match. I think both sides have a good chance. At least talk about it, in here, so those of us who miss it will have a chance to catch the nuance of the outcome. Thanks, in advance.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the latest version of my World Cup dashboard widget is now available for download from Apple.

World Cup 2006 Scores Widget

That's very cool! Nice work. Shame I didn't know about it during the group stages, when so many more games were being played. Oh well. Well done.

xsedrinam that's very good of you to miss the match for him.. I hope he appreciates it. We will discuss it as its happening (and at half time) here, so you can read back, and see how wildly wrong we were with our predictions.

Thanks. Pulling for the 'Che's. In the second game, I'm going out on a limb to pull for Ukraine. Their coach doesn't believe they're finished, yet. I hope the team follows suit.
