Who's looking forward to a Portugal v. Italy playoff for 3rd place match?
I am :)

Jury's still out on whether I want Germany or France to win the cup.

Not me! Portugal v Italy final... yes! :D

Italia! Will be wearing my vest with pride on Tuesday night... and my mother will have her Italia cap on again...

I'd like to see that too. Unfortunately, I think we'll see a France-Germany final.

Way things are, I'd be surprised if it isn't a France-Germany match up. But surprises have been part of it.

Portugal get Deco back on the pitch and Scolari is a coach who can get a side pumped and ready. Then there's Ricardo with a renewed assertion that he can read in to stikers' eyes. France will need another great performance from Zidane, Henry and Vieira.

I still like Germany over Italy. Nesta is out. Germany are at home and peaking at the right time.

Yeah.

And now that Beckham has resigned form his "captaincy", and that Sven finally has gone, England can enjoy a fresh start....

Apparently all the stars were aligned for the England team at the World Cup this year. There are 4 or 5 criteria for teams that have won the trophy and England met all of them, and the pundits said if England didnt do it this time, they may never. It is a mix of average age, number of class players with World Cup experience, on their own continent, and a couple of others I cant remember. Oh well,

This is a pretty stinging article amongst several which put, not all but, much of the blame for England's exit on Lampard's underachieving throughout the tournament. Are England loyals not happy about Steve McClaren being at the helm for the next four years? Where will the future take them?

Those happy to see unsmiling, Brazilian faces exit the pitch can gloat all they like, but their chastisement and scorn would pale in comparison to the derision and outrage verbalized toward Ronaldinho and Brazil's Coach, Parreira, by both Brazilian National Media and fans. Scolari may get another offer to return and heal their breach, especially is he gets Portugal past France and into the Finals.

Coming in late to the thread....

England is the national team I root for. So I was extremely disappointed when Portugal, who I can't stand, knocked them out on PKs. And Becks giving up the Captain's band.....bummer! What can I say, I'm a stupid American - I love Beckham.

I'm pumped France beat Brazil, so there is some solace.

I'm pulling for France to win the Cup, which means Portugal will knock them out next game.

If it comes down to a Portugal/Italy Final, I won't even bother watching.

I have my fingers crossed for a Germany - France final.

I don't, but I expect you'll be happy with the final. Not really much point crossing your fingers... it's a given.  :p

Let's just hope Italy finishes third.

There was some idiot American sports columnist who wrote before the World Cup that it was near impossible for a coach to make or break his team's chances on the pitch; that soccer was the antithesis of American football where the head coach has a disproportionate influence on the game.

Well, there are three very strong refutations to his flawed premise: Argentina, Brazil, and England.

Count me in hoping for a Germany/France final. Now that I've said it, a Portugal/Italy is a given. :(

A Ron Blum AP Article says it's a possibility, but not a done deal, yet, maybe a couple of years down the road.

Very late to this thread, but I thought I'd post these lovely pictures of the agonising last few minutes of the England v Portugal game.... in The Apple Store Regent Street!!

They had the BBC Real stream on in The Studio:

He is far too good for that league
Yea, because trying to bring the world's biggest game to the world's biggest market using one of the world's biggest stars is such a bad idea...

Becks has "done" England, has "done" Real Madrid, what's left for him? Go crawling back to England like a loser? Or stay with Real and continue not to win anything? Or move to USA and be treated like a mega star, and hopefully move MLS into the direction of NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL etc.... in truth, there's lots of potential there.

Errr...too many teams, not enough talent, and too much money? Why would the MLS want that?

I mean, the only reason the NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL are where they are is because there is no competition anywhere, except for minor pro and semi-pro leagues. There is nothing like La Liga v Bundesliga v Premiership v Serie A in hockey, baskeball, American football, and baseball...
