I couldn't watch all of the match, to tired  but go Portugal. I had a feeling that it might be our year

Please... no.

I kept my word.
I have not seen any football since Rooney's dismissal, and I am glad.
I heard England lost on penalties, and those ******* Portuguese got through again probably trying to annoy the whole world as usual.

I am happy the French have won over Brazil.

The French are my last hope..... Allez Henry!!

All the games went as I hoped - not as I expected.

England did play well with 10 men but that stamp was inexcusable however frustrated Rooney was. But when it went to penalties, you just knew it was over. None of the English players went to the spot with any real confidence and what a set of saves... absolutely amazing. It's got to be a real confidence drain knowing that you rarely win shoot-outs... and the pressure is on you to break the 'curse'!

No annoying neighbourly kazoos since I was in Scotland for this game where every butcher was doing a roaring trade in Piri Piri chicken - and since England are now out, I look forward to glorious silence going forward too. ;)

My South American friends tell me that it is common opinion in South America that France did not, in fact, beat Brazil in '98. They wholeheartedly believe it was fixed. I wonder what they'll have to say about this one...

most brazilians i know wholeheartedly believe they should be simply presented with the cup every four years, and the shameful practice of actually playing for it is basically an insult to their intelligence, as any adverse result is most obviously a fix. ;)

Depends on who you listen to, I suppose. I've lived there for some time and that's the first I've heard on that one. Today's loss to France? It's pretty simple. France played better. Zidane & Co. gave a clinic. Brazil didn't play a lo Brasileño (sending a 4-5-1 plan to the pitch with Adriano and Robinho on the bench 'til it was too late). Ronaldinho was ineffective. They got caught with not marking all four players on the set point. Brazil's coach was the first to admit it. Not a lot of mystique, I'd say.

it's painful to see such a talented team going out, but they barely showed it this time.
zidane did have a monster game. i think he is one of the true greats.

I suppose France must be the favourites now, but my guess is Italy will pull it off.

It's funny, but France's comment (can't remember if it was Henry), "Now, watch us fly" was made just after barely advancing out of their group, I scoffed to myself. "Ya, Spain will bring you down to earth no sooner than take off". Was I wrong.

Much can be said for the team who is peaking at just the right time. That would have to favor France over Portugal, imo. I still think Germany's that good, though. Who knows, but I'm just sort of pulling for Zidane and would like to see him end his fabulous career on a high.

No offence, but when do/did they play their full potential? Definitely not when it counts.

Some people here might hate me for this, but David Beckham is by a couple of light-years overrated player and even for an anti-England supporter it hurts to see him playing every game (don't let one freekick blind you from the truth). Lennon has shown, that he is a much more dangerous player.

Anyway, England has so much young talent and with a good coach ignoring the media and the old stars' reputation, they might achieve a lot in the future.

Well I'm not anti-England, not pro either. It's just that watching and listening to so much EPL you get to know the players well and I am continually amazed at how little the English team achieves. They really should do much better than they do and I really do feel sorry for them and my many English friends.

England managers continually pick names rather than form. I think there are other issues too (e.g. self-belief) but if they could just pick based on form that would be a huge step forward.

Now, where's that ever-lasting smile gone to? :D

So.

*rubs hands*

Who's looking forward to a Portugal v. Italy playoff for 3rd place match?

;)

The most pointless exercise possible and an opinion usually shared by the managers whose team selections usually bear this out... still, this might explain the Theo Walcott mystery. This was to be his moment of glory.

It's hard to believe that this was the first goal scored by Henry which was assisted by Zidane, after around 50 matches. If they can get some chemistry going, they'll continue to be dangerous.

Oh well... that's that for another two years.

At least I win £50 if France lift the cup, so I always have that thought to console me...

I see you've changed out of your international kit ;)

And, I hope you win your 50 quid! :D

I suppose the true grit Brazil bashers will gloat. I'd hope not, but some must. Brazil are a futbol nation and a wonderful people, as are the Argentines and Ecuadorians. They'll be back.

It would have been great to have had a South American side to pull for all the way through, imo of course, but not this time. Even though Portugal's coach is Brasileño, I'm not too predisposed to pull for a side who now occupies the highest foul rate of the surviving teams of the tournament. (I think they passed Germany after today's bout with England.)

Aww... it's hard to dispel the sense of Jaffa-gloom. Never mind, Euro 2008 qualifiers soon with glamorous ties against Andorra, Macedonia and Estonia led by a new England manager.

guess we now can hope for germany vs france in the final ... sorry my italian friends but Italy's defensive football is simply to much

about england: i guess that game showed again why rooney is no man for such emotional games .. he simply can't keep his temper under control
actually i made a bet with a friend that he would get at least 1 red card during the tournament (actually we were betting if he kicks somebody or punches another guy in the face)

and i hope it finally showed that Hargreaves has to be in the line up from start in the future ... after all he is playing defensive midfield at Bayern München which says a lot about a player...

and thankfully Brazil is out...

Indeed – my Jaffatar™ is no longer on international duty, unless we can track down some French or Italian grandparents for him... :D

Yep, no point dwelling on what might have been – time to regroup and look to the next tournament. Of course, our new national manager started his career at Hull City so if he messes up you all know who to blame for bringing him into the game in the first place.

Yeah.

I feel that the pressure put on Rooney was far too great. And he's not experienced enough to be able to control himself against such irritating players as those Portuguese are.
But, I bet he has learned a huge lesson.
And now that Beckham has resigned form his "captaincy", and that Sven finally has gone, England can enjoy a fresh start....

If the final will be France v Germany, I'll watch the game, and probably enjoy it!. If either Italy or Portugal make it to the final, I'll probably save myself from all the irritations.
