How did Ashley Cole not make that? :(

I'm guessing because it is the "technical" all World Cup team, so I guess he did not have good enough stats...

BBC said:
Fifa's technical study group chose 23 players in total including seven players from Italy and four from fellow finalists France.

Italy is nicely represented there. 7 out of 23. :D :D

Fancy coming along? I'll warn you now... I'll be in my Italia vest and I'll be loud... ;)

:D Sounds fun! I'll have to see how hung over I am on Sunday... have a feeling I might have to just watch it from my sofa!

For me, for that England v portugal performance alone, i think he should be in it... he was no less that stunning... truly top class that day. Owen hargreaves was a hero too.

Agreed. He also made a goal saving intervention in England vs. Ecuador.. meh. :p

Ahead of Zambrotta? Are you being serious?

Cole was one of England's better players, but Zambrotta has been absolutely magnificent. My player of the tournament.

That team was put together by idiots by the look of it...

Zambrotta plays on the right and Lahm on the left.... Cole is much better than Lahm

Wishful Thinking: Part 2,415,523...
Poor little Michael Owen. Never mind his damaged knee, have they checked to see if he's suffering from any head injuries? ;)

Player for player I'd say we had one of the better squads, but having a good group of players is entirely different from having a good team.

I'm an Italian American but I follow soccer closely (mostly Premiere League) with my favorite club side being ManU, with others being Juventus, DC United, and Real Madrid. In the summer of 98 someone got me hooked on the Azzurri at the ripe age of 9 and I never looked back. I find it hard to even support the Americans when they are playing Italy. Tomorrow afternoon I will be clad in my 06 Italia jersey, flag around the shoulders, and painted face.

Forza Italia! :D

So closely that you don't know what it is called ;)

I grew up with it called soccer, and I try to refer to it as football as much as I can because I know that is the proper way but it slipped my mind in the previous post. No need to post just to point out that error.

I think he was talking about the Premier as opposed to the Premiere... but was a tad harsh

And, as an Italian Scot, Forza Italia too!

I actually meant "premiere" league, but soccer too.

Maybe I need a bigger winking smilie...

The news is that Rooney has received a two match suspension and a £2,400 fine following his red card against Portugal...

Yeah, saw that. Without getting into the details of Rooney's booking, why is it that governing bodies are generally so lenient with fines on clubs and players? To Wayne Rooney on possibly tens of thousands per week, £2400 is a pittance. In relative terms, probably less than a parking ticket for the likes of you and I.

Anyway, let's not dwell on those out of the scheme of things for the most-eagerly awaited match of the tournament is almost upon us: play-off for 3rd place. :D

Apparently Germany are well up for it for themselves and the fans and yet Scolari says he's having problems motivating his players... in that case, are we going to see an exhibition match with the score at 4-3 or a German whitewash? Does anyone ever remember this fixture from years past?

Not really... I remember England's match at Italia 90 where we lost to the hosts, and the playoff from the last World Cup between Turkey and South Korea. I remember the two groups of players doing a lap of honour together and it was all very sporting and civilised.

But apart from those two... I don't really remember any others in any detail.
