While they've by no means been the only culprits, I'm a bit sick of Portugal's antics in this World Cup – diving, feigning injury and trying to get opponents booked. Germany have played some good football and been great hosts so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them tonight, and I never thought I'd hear myself say that. ;)

Well said, and if the BBC's effing link to the Real stream wasn't broken I'd be watching the game now.

I hope you've managed to get a picture of some description, because if not you've just missed an absolute peach of a goal. 1-0 Germany, and a complete foul-up by Ricardo.

It's working now... but I was in the kitchen heating up soup when the goal was scored, of course. :D

Keeper looked flummoxed.

It's a pity he wasn't quite as flummoxed in the last penalty shootout he was involved in. :D

Blimey! Another! And was that an own goal?

Yep. Glanced off two defenders and right into the net.

Another lovely goal for Pigriser. What a dynamite shooter from distance.

And Portugal bangs one in off a perfect Figo cross. 3-1.

It's now 3-0 for Germany, which proves that Italy is indeed the best team since they beat the Mannschaft 2 nil.... Magnum Gaudium!!!! I've been watching replays of the second overtime since.... :p

Not quite following your logic there, but I'll take your word for it... ;)

3-1 it is on the night then – as I mentioned earlier, I'm pleased with that. Is that Kahn's last game for Germany then? I don't think he's officially announced his retirement, but it seems like it must be the end of his international career. It's a pity he couldn't have kept a clean sheet, but he was excellent tonight.

If only that was how football really worked!

We could calculate the winners and scores of every game on a computer.

You are correct in that football doesn't really follow logic, except if you live in Europe like me, then one thing is certain: If the French win, we'll never hear the end of it...

Well done Germany.. and you have been good hosts too.

Very true, the Germans have been fantastic hosts! I really hope we'll have a wonderful final without any fouls and divings in the penalty area. No matter who wins, the white and the red will be on the flag Let's hope that the Squadra Azzurra and L'Equipe COLONIAL de France will play a wonderful match...:D

Same with the Italians though :)

I live in England so I don't really have to listen to the gloating :)

too bad that odds are a bad world cup is gonna follow this fabulous one.. all reports are south africa's less organized now than greece was in 2000 for athens 2004, and there's less room for error in the world cup. rumors have it that it might even make a sudden move to the USA or Spain...

but anyway, go france, i'm friggin' psyched for the match tommorow. hopefully we get a good game, i couldn't even watch most of France v. Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo just disgusted me with all the dives he was taking.

Yeah, saw that. Without getting into the details of Rooney's booking, why is it that governing bodies are generally so lenient with fines on clubs and players? To Wayne Rooney on possibly tens of thousands per week, £2400 is a pittance. In relative terms, probably less than a parking ticket for the likes of you and I.
Well, I know that the MLB and FIA (at least in F1) are much stiffer in terms of fines. Pedro Martinez was fined $50k I believe after Game 4 of the 2003 ALCS. Had that happened during the regular season, he and the other involved party probably would have been suspended.

I would love if it came here again. I couldn't go to any games last time, but I only live about 30 minutes away from Gillette Stadium (which replaced Foxboro Stadium), so I would definitely try to go again. If not, I'm sure I could host a view viewing parties. :D

Maybe, they'll name a stadium for him--The Kahn Dome. ;)

I was surprised to find myself watching footie again after Japan was routed by Brazil. That outcome wasn't a terrible surprise, really, but it was something I should have avoided.

I was impressed with the German team, esp. Kahn and Schweinsteiger. I wish that I'd seen the game on something other than Telefutura but it was exciting. Also, nice to see the Portuguese coaches' reaction to Petit's accidental goal assist. That's got to be the worst except for driving the ball down the field the wrong way and scoring for the other team.

I hope that S. Africa will be able to host the games in four years. It's a wonderful country and the people are great! I've spent a few weeks there shark diving and I really loved it!

But anyway...GO ITALY: I hope the final will be a game we can all be proud off! Amazing how a football game can rally people together in countries that would be otherwise ready to crack....

Nah, we'll do it! We've got the stadiums all ready and everything. Just give 'em a lick of paint, cover up any sponsors names (because FIFA doesn't like those) and we're good to go. :)

Plus, as hosts, we'd qualify automatically. Hurrah!

OK then. Predictions for tonight's game?

Italy 2, France 1

I realise that's terribly optimistic as the last few finals have been fairly barren affairs but I think (hope) tonight might be different.

Congrats on the 2000th reply in this thread. :p

Allez les bleus!

2-1 France. :D
