Just out of interest, how much would it set you back to watch a top level sports game in the US – I'm thinking of an NFL or MLB game for example, between a couple of decent sides?

According to this article from four years ago, the average ticket prices at the time were:

NFL: $50.02
NBA: $43.65
NHL: $41.56
MLB: $19.82

I wish I had newer figures. And obviously the dollar was worth quite a bit more then!

Anyway, these numbers are just averages. There's a lot of variation on each team. At the time you could get a cheap seat at Dodger Stadium for only $6. At the other end of the spectrum, a courtside seat at a Laker game would easily be over $1,000. But the averages do reflect the fact that there are only 16 regular-season NFL games each year, so demand for each seat is higher. The NBA and NHL teams play 82 games each season. Major league baseball plays a whopping 162 games per.

Teams like the Boston Red Sox have the highest ticket prices in baseball because (1) they're a popular team with a rabid fan base, and (2) they have the smallest stadium capacity of any team. The Dodgers are also a popular team, but their park holds 56,000 fans, so even a low-demand game on a weeknight might draw 30,000 people and the place looks half empty. There's also been a big stadium construction boom in the U.S. in the last 15 years or so. Each time a team opens a new stadium, the prices jump up higher.

Obviously the ticket prices don't include buying concessions, souvenirs, or parking. Parking ends up being pretty important because - except for a few places with excellent public transit like New York City or Boston - most fans end up driving to the games. I went to a Laker game last November and parking cost $20.

Baseball tickets in Cleveland are pretty reasonable, and while the Indians aren't a top team they're one of the better teams.

NFL tickets in Cleveland are a bit more - I think they start around $30ish.

As aloofman said, baseball tickets tend to be cheaper because the schedule is so long, with ten times as many games per season as the NFL.

minor league soccer(football for those of us in the know ;) ) are 10 bucks here! not a good deal. on a metal bleacher seat. i can get a box seat at AAA Nashville Sounds baseball for that.

There's been similar questions asked about why our crowds have dropped over the past year or two – every reason you could think of has been suggested, from the novelty of our promotion seasons wearing off for the fair weather supporters to people having less spare cash following the costs they incurred following last year's floods. Even the smoking ban has been cited as a possible reason why some people are choosing to stay away.

It's a odd one, because on the pitch we're as successful as we've been for quite a while, and special offers on matchday tickets don't really seem to do trick when we try them...

Same seems to be the case with Carlisle. We're second in the league, hunting for promotion and we get 6000 tops. We sold out when Leeds came to town (Almost 17,000) and we won that, but still the next home game we only got 6500. I can't fathom it.

I think we still actually hold the Conference attendance record, which is well over 10,000 and we can nowhere near emulate those crowds, we we're getting about that every week almost. We've won 11 games in a row at home as well, so it's not even like our form is pants.

I can't believe Spurs are getting thumped this badly...and haven;t scored yet either. A bit too much celebration after the cup final?

Aston Villa seem to be playing well and will very much deserve the three points they're headed for if the scoreline against Arsenal doesn't change...

Wow, four goals at the death between all the games...Blackburn squeak past luckless Newcastle, Reading summon a late winner and Tottenham get a pointless consolation.

Bad luck Aston Villa...Arsenal looked very shaky.

What what Lampard doing to get sent off?

Newcastle lose again... So since Keegan's return it's:

Played 7 - Won 0 Drawn 2 lost 5 For 3 Against 17

He's really working his magic at the moment.

Ok, lets talk about the relegation battle, it's all looking a bit tight down there.

The way I see it, it's Derby, Fulham + 1 other. As long as that third one isn't Wigan I'll be a happy man.

If they don't 'get a result soon', to coin a footballing cliché, it's probably going to be Newcastle.

Derby are a given unless some Hollywood movie style heroics happen between now and the rest of the season... meanwhile, Fulham's prospects are looking increasingly bleak and it could be anyone from twelfth down. As for the last spot, anyone from twelfth downwards needs to be looking over their shoulder.

Things aren't looking too rosy for them at the moment, that's for sure – the fact that their goal difference is so much worse than most of the teams below them sets alarm bells ringing.

As this is the Premiership thread I think I should post about the team closest to the Premiership but not yet in the promised land... Bristol City.

Living down in Bristol I went to see them play out lads Hull City in what was a game between the two form teams of the division.

Bristol didn't really deserve the win, a draw would have been a good result, but... There is no way that Bristol City are capable of lasting 5 minutes in the Premiership. They where average, sat back and played on the counter attack. Both goals they scored where defensive mistakes and they just won't get those sort of chances in the top flight. Hull had a far better first half and 1 - 1 was a good score line for Bristol but we never produced much to threaten them in the second half.

If they do go up then expect another Derby!

Agree with Derby and Fulham. The third will come either Reading, Bolton, Birmingham  , Sunderland, Wigan, Newcastle or Middlesbrough.

Based on current form I think that list can not be reduced but my prediction is Reading will join Derby and Fulham.

Edit - had a blonde moment :D and put Wigan rather than Fulham to go down.

Oh and coming up, Watford and Stoke will get the automatic places and any from Palace in 11th upwards could win the playoff. However ideal world I'd like to see Bristol City get promoted.

After utter disappointed last week, it is really nice to watch Arsenal clutch victory (or a third of a victory, at least) from the jaws of defeat in a match with a decent club that completely outplayed the Gunners today, especially when it means that slim lead over Man U still exists. :D
