And Wenger said: "We were lucky, but I'm very proud of the character in that young team and I'm very happy."

Hat's off to Wenger. Nothing wrong with a bit of luck.

He added: "We were even better than Arsenal at Highbury. We deserve to be in the final."

Pellegrini does Mourhino.

"It comes down to psychological reason and Jens guessed right. It was more of a poker game than good training."

More honesty from Wenger. That's class.

Pellegrini refused to blame Riquelme for the penalty miss.

More BS from Pellegrini. If he wasn't going to publicly blame Riquelme then he should have said nothing. Lehmann even gave us a clue why it was Ricky's fault...

We didn't think it was a penalty, but I thought about Riquelme putting one to his right last week and decided to go there.

And there you have it. Jens does his homework well. In an interview I read with Lehmann when he first moved to Arsenal he spoke about this exact sort of ultra methodical preparation. That's why it was Riquelme's fault because he tried what works for him in important situations and he was utterly clueless that Lens would have studied this. A poker game indeed and Ricky was utterly outclassed by Jens.

"It is difficult to explain how one feels after this," Pellegrini said.

How about mugged off by Riquelme?

"It is not important," he said. "We should all think it is very difficult to be in that position and how he was feeling at the moment.

Riquelme was probably feeling a bit like someone who didn't do their homework and was suddenly asked the question that he should have known the answer to.

I wonder if Riquelme has seen Wim Wender's 'The goalkeeper's fear of the penalty"?

are you kidding me? Wenger has a lack of class almost to rival Mourinho.

let me remind you of a couple of things Arsene said last year about Liverpool in the Champions League, and being Champions...

Arsene Wenger said:
it devalued the competition

and...

the irony of Wenger's statement last May vowing to focus on the Premiership this season as the Champions League was too much of a crapshoot because any ol' team could win it...

yeah, the guy has class alright. now Thierry Henry, he is a man with class, Wenger needs to learn a bit from his star Henry.

I'm going to Paris... but not necessarily into the stadium. We'll see what I can do on the night.. there will be screens setup to watch apparently, so I will watch there if I can't pick up a ticket on the day. Its what thousands of others of gooners are doing too from what I have picked up. But yea, I'll be in Paris hopefully.

Breaking News! The missus has just told me that they're reckoning on Five Live that the FA have officially offered Big Phil Scolari the England job for after this summer's World Cup. He's apparently yet to agree terms, though...

Whoa!

So just being there in Paris could spawn a fantastic evening!

Personally, while I think it would be nice for the England team to have an English (or at least British) manager, I'd much rather have someone at the helm who knows what he's doing and has proven experience at winning tournaments and championships, irrespective of his nationality. Scolari's record speaks for itself – he's enjoyed success as an international manager (winning the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and reaching the Euro 2004 final with Portugal), as well as winning a bagful of titles and trophies at club level in South America.

My only major concern is that he's apparently a Nottingham Forest fan. :D ;)

Blimey... you can keep your Manchester Uniteds and your Liverpools. if you want England's comeback kings, look no further than Middlesbrough in the UEFA Cup! For the second round in succession they've had to find four goals to make it through to the next round, and now they're headed to the final in Eindhoven. Hurrah!

If England find themselves four-nil down at halftime in the Euro 2008 final, the suits at the FA will maybe regret overlooking Steve McClaren in favour of Big Phil... :D

Have you forgotten that Liverpool was 3-nil down at half time, against AC Milan in the Champions League Final. Sounds like a bigger comeback.

Nope, not forgotten that. :)

So, with Arsenal in the Champions League final and Middlesbrough in the UEFA, that does raise the possibility of an all English Super Cup...

Well Liverpool did it once. We did it twice. We're the best English team in European competitions!:p :D

Of course, it could be argued that you (Boro and Liverpool) shouldn't find yourself in the position having to conjure up three-plus goals sharpish to save the game in the first place, but we'll gloss over that. ;)

Scoliari has rejected the post because...The english press are too pathetic.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/4955490.stm

I hope the FA chooses Sam Alladyce now, the press deserves him.

Not that i give two ***** about England football team (although take an interest in the world cup as there isnt anything to do in the summer otherwise) as i support Liverpool but if fat sam gets the job I shall never watch the nation team whilst he is manager.

If Scolari thought the press intrusion was bad now, then he's unprepared for what he'd experience if he actually took the job and did something terrible like, I don't know, actually lose a match. Of course, this could be a smokescreen for another reason, or a ploy to encourage the FA to come back with an improved offer.

And of course, the situation now is that the manager who takes the role instead of Scolari will carry the label of 'second-choice'. The whole thing is turning into a bigger mess at each step of the way

Good to see the FA living up to its reputation of competency and professionalism.

I don't think any ploys are going on here. I believe that, not being a mug, Scoliari would of course be well aware of he level of press intrusion, but I think that even knowing this he was genuinely shocked to find 20 reporters camped outside his home at this early stage. It wouldn't have been about money as he was already offered more than he's ever earned. Respect to Scoliari.

In a way the UK press have shot themselves in the foot. Remember all this new manager business has only come about because of the final sting on Erickson. To paraphrase Nixon, they won't have Erickson to kick around any longer, and he's done a better job than the recent previous managers. Seriously the press really does deserve Fat Sam. I hope he gets the job.

I think as well the fact that he's seeing articles comparing his wife's dress-sense with that of Sven's ladyfriend ticked him off greatly. Even though he's used to dealing with the press, and will know excatly how much they hound managers, it's clear he was shocked by the scrutiny his family were coming under, scrutiny that has nothing to do with football or his ability to do the job.

As for the money issue... granted, it's more than he's ever been paid before, but it's still far less than Eriksson is currently paid. Possibly it's more pride than greed? Why should a man who has won nothing at international level (although his record isn't exactly poor) command a higher salary than a World Cup winner and European Championship runner-up? In all honesty, I'm just guessing – I don't have a clue what's going on, which basically at this point puts me on a par with the FA.

And yes, if we end up with a poor manager in the job the press will have no one to blame but themselves. They'd probably relish the prospect, though – articles slagging off the coach for his tactics/player selection/success/dress sense write themselves...

The Sun newspaper revealed on Saturday that McClaren had an affair with a secretary during a trial separation from his wife. —bbc, after Scoliari ruled himelf out.

Note that The Scum newspaper had no interest in printing this until McClaren became a candidate again.

See. Absolutely pathetic.
