So, let's just check that I understand this right... the story is essentially that Steve McClaren had a relationship with a woman? Am I alone in failing to see an exciting news angle there?

I've absolutely no doubt that the tabloids have their top people trying to dig up some dirt on Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley even as I type. Good work, people...

Latest news is that Scolari turned down the job due to death threats to his family that have originated from Portugal. This would make the FA look even more stupid (difficult as that may be) than they already have demonstrated. Scoliari made it clear in initial negotiations he didn't want to announce anything till after the world cup but the FA pushed him.

After the next England manager (whoever it is) loses his first important game we'll hear tearful regrets that they shafted Sven.

can't believe i'm about to say this, but...

Come on Chelsea!

if ManUre get beat, Liverpool have a tiny tiny chance of clinching 2nd place...

I was thinking that myself, after last years madness with Everton and Liverpool, I think it's bound to happen. I'd laugh so hard if MoanU had to qualify. And after their recent good form they are due for an end of year collapse if for no other reason than to give their year a nice symmetrical feel.

Congrats to Chelsea, they win at home, against Manchester United of all teams.

glad they won it over the Mancs, but the gap between both them and Liverpool shrunk dramatically this season, should be a great season in a few short months :)

If we still have Thierry, and are in the C. League, don't forget us....! :p

So, just to recap...

Chelsea have been crowned champions, West Brom and Birmingham are relegated, Alan Curbishley has announced he's leaving Charlton at the end of the season, and England supporters are biting their fingernails after both Rooney and Terry picked up injuries this afternoon, and Owen seems to still be having problems with his foot. A pretty eventful afternoon all in all...

Any news on Rooney?
The three England injury worries are discussed on the BBC here. Apparently it's not as serious as first thought, but the sight of him being stretchered off and then leaving Old Trafford on crutches is a worrying one. :(

And apparently, Gary Neville was hobbling a bit too...

EDIT: This from the BBC – apparently Rooney has fractured a metatarsal bone in his right foot and is now 'a doubt' for the World Cup. :(

Noooooooooooooooooooooo dammit to hell. The curse of the metatarsal strikes again. Let's hope that Sven at least picks *fully* fit players this time rather than first choicers who are 85%. Better to take a chance on an untested fit talent imo

They're reckoning 'at least' six weeks for Rooney's injury. And we're exactly six weeks away from the start of the tournament. As a comparison, Beckham's similar injury before the 2002 competition occurred eight weeks before it kicked off, and he was nowhere near fitness when he actaully played. Not good news at all, especially with the other niggling injuries that are creeping into the squad. Combined with Michael Owen's foot injury, that's problems with our two first choice strikers, plus as already mentioned Gary Neville and Terry were having problems today. We can only hope that Gerrard, Beckham and Lampard don't pick up knocks in their remaining matches, otherwise we're as screwed as an FA secretary.

At the current rate our international stars are picking up injuries, there is the possibility that Sven will have to go so far down the pecking order that I actually might be called up to his squad... :D

That is bad news.

That' s the trouble with the tough domestice leagues added with the high profile Euro-leagues the top Euro-teams have to face.
These players have such a long and hard year, that World Cups always come at a bad time.
Teams like England, France and Spain will always start a World Cup with a weary team, riddled with injury.
I'm not sure how many Brazilian, Argentinian, or Dutch national players are engaged in fights for domestic relegation or championship battles, domestic cup competiton or European Cups, but I have the feeling that English, French, Spanish and Italian teams have the toughest road to the World Cup.

Well that's it for Rooney, at least he's still young. Let's hope that there is no talk about him maybe making it. That would just show they have learned nothing. Look at Arsenal they have set a very difficult to be CL clean sheet record only because their first choice back four were out.

"The thought of Rooney and Owen not being in the World Cup for England is not worth thinking about"—Glenn Roeder

Well Roeder may not want to think about it but I hope Sven has already accepted it as fact.

Saw this on the bbc footy forum and I almost fell off my chair laughing...

the world cup would be winnable for england without rooney if the tactics were right. but as we all know, sven wouldn't know a tactic from a tic-tac so i think we're shafted

Usually I adhere to the adage that for satire to be funny it can't be fair but in this case it is both funny and fair.

EDIT:

What the hail is this fracking bollox?...

England midfielder Steven Gerrard said it would be "impossible" for England to succeed in this summer's World Cup without striker Wayne Rooney.

Robson, who is now a consultant for the Republic of Ireland national team, said Rooney must be taken to Germany - even if there was only a chance of him playing later in the tournament.

If Gerrard believes that then why is he going at all, let someone who thinks they can win go in his place. As for Robson's comment it is even more ludicrous. He'll be injured plus he'll be sent off as well.

This concept that England must take players who are 80% fit is very sad.

Imaging the pressure on Rooney if he were fit to go...

If people go around saying things like "impossible to win without Rooney", they apply so much pressure on the poor guy, that it would be very tough for him to perform at all.

England is still in with a huge shout, IMHO. You guys have the best midfield of the world. I just hope they can actually play well together (i.e.: how many captains on one ship...)
