Spurs last played in Europe in 1999-2000, after winning the League Cup.

Yep, I think Spurs would have a good chance of making some headway in the Uefa Cup. Arsenal would surely win it.

So, not so long ago then.
Had any luck that season?

BTW... yeah. Even without Henry (and Bergkamp), Arsenal would be the favourites for an UEFA cup season.

Nope.

Just feel that we shouldn't be so depending on one player. Kinda like England and Rooney... ;)
Ofcourse... Henry is simply best player in the world, and it would be devastating to see him leave.

Difficult to argue with that.

On another matter, are you going to be sad to see the redcurrant shirts go when you move to Ashburton Grove? They're far nicer than the red and white.

I prefer the red & white.
It was nice to have those old shirts for the season, but I'd like to see the normal gear again. I hope only the sleeves are white, and not like other seasons when the shoulder area was white aswell.

Must've been good for merchandising, though! :p

Yep, that was pretty dodgy! Was that the same year as the gold piping?

If Arsenal do win the CL, and the Spurs stay 4th, is it true that Tottenham won't be able to qualify for the CL next season?
IIRC, when Liverpool was in the same situation with Everton (ironically also their home town rivals) last year, I thought both of them were able to qualify.

i think they clarified it for this year, so if Arsenal win the CL then Spurs are SOL and Arsenal will get the 4th, and final, place in the qualifiers. i think.

As far as I've understood it: If Arsenal wins Champions League, they will actually be directly qualified for next years tournament, and don't have to qualify, forcing Celtic (!) out into the last qualification round, not the second placed English team, which will still be directly qualified along with Chelsea. The third team in England will have to qualify while the forth (most likely Tottenham) have to play in the UEFA cup...

That's right – after the arguments that ensued after Liverpool won the competition last year, UEFA have clarified the rules. In all fairness to Spurs, you can understand their frustration – fourth placed in the league would be good enough under any other circumstances, they're going to miss out on a healthy chunk of revenue... plus of course there's also the fact that the team that get the nod ahead of you are your oldest and bitterest rivals. ;)

As for Arsenal 'surely' winning the UEFA Cup next season... they'd be ranked as one of the favourites, certainly, but there's no such thing as surely in football. There are going to be a lot of good sides in the competition and cup football is very unforgiving...

An exaggeration on my part, for sure. I was just trying to cheer up the gooners. :p

Tnx for clearing that up.

But why is Celtic then forced to qualify?
Is Scotland's no.1 on the edge of automatic qualification?

I didn't realise that Celtic would also be affected.

This situation really is a mess. It's right that Arsenal should be allowed to defend their title if they win in Paris, but it's unfair that other teams should lose out as a result - especially when there's so much revenue at stake.

I think they are the lowest ranking of the direct qualifiers at the moment, but Arsenal will bump them down one position if they win... so Gio** and Henke will have an extra incentive to beat Arsenal May 17th... ;)

** yes, I know he played for the Gunners, too...

Pretty sure Rangers supporters will back us though! :p

Fair enough. I suppose they need a fair bit of cheering up, what with the biggest prize in European club football with their grasp and a huge shiny new stadium ready to move into. Poor darlings... ;)

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is poised to take Wayne Rooney to the World Cup despite his broken foot.

"Wayne is a world-class player and we will give him every chance to play in the World Cup; with such a huge talent you have to do that," Eriksson said.

Well that's England buggered then. I cannot believe that these are the exact same words he used about Beckham. It's depressing. But who will Sven select between the sticks, it has to be...Calamity James.

Paul Robinson, surely. James will be in the squad, certainly, but I'd be surprised if he moves ahead of Robinson in the pecking order.

That's assuming Robinson doesn't pick up an injury in the next month, of course.

What a fracking Jodrel, Jol is. How can he complain about not being in the CL if Arsenal win. The rules were unclear last year which is precisely why they were made crystal clear this year. After Bolton were denied a pretty definite penalty he just smirked and said "that's football". Fair enough but he can't then complain at the end of the year about a rule that was clarified at the beginning of the year.

Well he can of course as you can see from this

And while I'm ranting what's this all about (from the same article)

"The first half we couldn't pressurise the ball and they had a spare man in midfield. MJ

What the Frackville is he talking about. Aren't the balls pressurised to a standard diameter before the match. I hope Tottenham don't lose (or win) at West Ham and I hope Arsenal will draw one of their last three games because it would be more fun to watch Arsenal go through on GD, to make the pain all the more acute. :D

My mum was from Tottenham, but frack 'em all I say.
