I promise you that you're exactly right. I've now confirmed this with virtually every family member and friend who has purchased the new iPad. They literally cannot see anything wrong with their screens, and most of their screens are really bad.

This is why there hasn't been a "screengate" ala "antennagate". It's a problem that Apple is very much aware of, but they don't have to acknowledge it because most of their customers aren't.

I wonder if it has much to do with your hue discrimination ability. If you can score 100% on this test (as I can), you probably see bad screens everywhere you go:

waiting for my base MBPr w/ 16gb (first mac!) to show up, but took the test on my DELL U2311H ULTRASHARP 23" (e-IPS panel)
I only really have problem with dark blue and black which takes me a while to notice which is which... here's my score in case you're curious

I thought mine was perfect until I read on here about checking on a grey screen... now I can see a ghost panel where safari used to be.

Not good. Not sure what to do now, live with it, or return it and start setting up all over again...

Good score... out of curiosity, are you one who notices a lot of screen problems?

Very interesting test. Thanks for the link. As a graphic designer, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Here's my score.

And to confirm your suspicion, I see every flaw in every screen I look at.

Same here... My screen is awesome when it comes to uniformity, brightness and all other aspects. However, I can see ghosting within 5 minutes on a dark grey background or dashboard. I really don't want to risk getting a screen that doesn't look as good as I don't have any other problems with the computer. However, I don't think I started to notice the ghosting until I started looking for it.

I'd be devastated if I got the yellow tiint issue, already went through that with an older MBP. Also, my screen is A00F if anyone is curious.

Well, called applecare, the chap sounded very surprised by the ghosting issue... whether he was playing it down or not I don't know.

I'm going to pop to the apple store to see what they say tomorrow. I guess if I get a replacement, and it's *****, I'll have to keep getting replacements till they're perfect.

I can't spend this much money on a laptop for it not to be right. I'm going to push to keep this one until the new one comes, so I can see if the new one is right before I go without a computer.

Worst case scenario I can think of is that the new one has dead pixels and they won't swap it out. :(

If you get a replacement, turn it on at the store to check for dead pixels before you leave.

It will have to be ordered, which is why I want to keep this one while the other one is made & shipped (as i did a 16gb upgrade)

As far as I know I just need to put a hold on my card for the amount of the new one which is canceled when the other is returned.

Just hope I can replicate the issue tomorrow, or they don't try to play it down and tell me to deal with it.

Just have to say dont look to replicate defect, if your display is perfect for your normal usage pattern, dont go there. Personally I am highly impressed by the Retina`s display. My own 2.3`s display is perfect, then again I am not going to perform test`s that are completely outside my own usage.

If you look long enough under the microscope your going to find defect with any product. Apple`s quality is better than most and customer service second to none, with that in mind if your display suffers image retention when displaying a specific shade of grey do you want to risk a machine being replaced with one with dead pixel, one with a yellow tint, or simply one that works within the design perimeters, same as the first...

This is really what I'm leaning towards...

Might see what they say. I think I'll ask that if I keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse that they can swap it out. At least then it might be around a time that there's more readily available stock, and I can just swap there and then.

Everything else seems perfect, my main concern is that it worsens thats all. (like a plasma)

In case anyone is interested, after 3 weeks my display developed a "bright spot". After the genius looked at it, he had to order in a new screen. Took about 2 days for it to arrive and then I brought it in for repair. The repair took about one hour and they also gave me a 10% discount card for my next purchase on anything in the store. All in all, fast good service, and the new screen looks flawless (hopefully this one stays that way).

Nice service from Apple.

Nice to see they are now starting to do in store repairs! No more returns hopefully :) Should help people who are having issues with rmbps they just got. As well as help clear up the supply chain.

Yep, mine was the first one they repaired as a matter of fact ;)

So, went to speak to the genius local to me, and he basically said 'get a new one - that's what I'd do'

I asked about screen replacement, and he said he'd be happy to do it, but he 'personally' wouldn't want someone opening up his new machine. My response was 'but you're apple professionals' ...he said yeah, but still...

So, new laptop en route, and I get to keep this one while the other one comes. Hope the new one isn't any worse or I'll have to keep doing this till I get a perfect one!

:D

I'm considering going this route...not that I'm convinced yet that I'll get one that is any better than what I've already got.

Which department at Apple did you talk to in order to arrange the exchange? The Apple Store, or Apple Support?

I called applecare, they told me to go see a genius, then called apple care back, who put me through to someone else...

Bit of a long winded thing, but the genius was really helpful.

I'm beginning to think that a lot of people who purchase these (& iPad 3's) also have these minor issues & just don't see them in their day to day use. I noticed that a couple of friends with iPad 3's had uneven backlight or a gradient and they swear they can't see anything. Of the four or so people I had give third-party perspectives on my rmbp, I had 2 say they saw the pink corners and 2 say they saw a uniformly white screen.

I'm getting to a first name basis with some of the apple store folks here... they must think I'm OCD or something

You're so spot on with this comment, and sometimes I wish I was not as observant as I am, so I could avoid the disappointment when these screens arrive with all their various issues. I had the 'gradient' problem with my 13" MBP a year or so ago - it basically looked like the LCD panel had a slight fold in it (hard to describe). I took it to the Apple store and they swapped out the screen for one that had the same problem. I sent that one back to Apple and received a replacement. The whole process took about a month and a half in total and was a real pain. Luckily, the Apple Store guys recognised the problem, despite the fact that it wasn't as apparent in the store as it was in different lighting. How others don't see these flaws is beyond me, and it's a shame, because Apple doesn't have to learn any lessons. They placate those of us who notice these issues by patting us on the heads and then sending us new computers, but they don't have to worry about their QC issues.

I'm hoping my rMBP isn't afflicted by these issues, as I have to travel to the US for three weeks just two days after my latest expected delivery date. The hassle to return it will be immense. The US Apple Store reps will say, 'you've bought this in the UK, we can't do anything for you.' The UK store reps will say, 'return it and we'll ship you a new one' (to be delivered while I'm away). Oh...first world problems once again - just as a couple hundred Syrian villagers are being massacred. I need to alter my perspective on life sometimes...

This is a terrific thread. I scored a PERFECT 0 on the test and I also see EVERY defect on every LCD I have ever owned. It's a blessing and a curse:(.

I had to return 6 iPad 3s until I got one that was "acceptable" but still saw slight tinting. My ACD display as well as my MBP 17" AG screen also have some different white points left to right. But I have since just tried to use them instead of looking for issues.

I do digital photography and perhaps this has trained my eyes to find even very minute discrepancies. I hesitate to order the rMBP now based on how many teething issues I am reading about here. That and the not so ready screen scrolling issues has left me sitting on the fence for now until ML is released.

Just picked up a base model last night. Drove 200 miles round trip to get her lol. Played with it al the wya home while the wife was driving haha. Have yet to notice any ghosting, light bleed dead pixels or anything. This weekend will give me more time to evaluate. Mine seems (to my eyes at least, not sure of the best way to test) to have excellent white point with none of the yellowing people are speaking of. In fact I tried a color profile I downloaded form someone on here who calibrated with a spyder and the white point actually looked worse to my eyes than what my display was by default.

From my experience with the iPads (3rd gen) the yellow is very noticeable when on this site because if the white background. I went through 3 before I found one that didn't have that yellow tint. Enjoy!! Wonderful computer!:D

If you can get it replaced for a new machine do it. They didn't ticken the screws properly on mine and now I have to go back.
