I haven’t had a optical drive in my PCs for the past 9 years or so, but I think there‘s still a strong case for them in consoles. The ability to sell/trade unwanted games and finding cheap pre owned games at retail stores. At least here in Australia games can launch in retail stores for ~$79 vs $99 digital.

Really keen on Gran Turismo, Project Athia, Stray, Kenya: Bridge of Spirits, Pragmata and Horizon.

I mentioned Kenya and Horizon above, but Project Athia looked super neat as well. As far as physical copies, yeah, we've even been doing that on the Switch, for all the reasons you mentioned.

Console design doesn't really speak to me. Looks like it could be a new skyscraper in Dubai. I actually like the new XBOX design better.

The console design looks horrific in my opinion. Makes the PS3 Foreman grill edition in piano black and spiderman font almost attractive. Almost. :) What were they smoking... A huge glowing burrito wrap that sticks out like a sore thumb no matter where you place it. Doubles up as a female repellant I bet.

It's really "over designed", I mean, I sort of get wanting to create some brand identity with the external design, maybe having it stick in your head during decision time (for those who are XBox __or__ PS5), but it's not like it needs to be overtly visible in your house. Some of the design appears to be some neat functional engineering, for things like cooling, so that's pretty neat I guess. I'd prefer a more "appliance" type design, like my other AV components (AVR, ATV, etc.)

Someone above suggested "the fans" wanted white - was there significant clamoring for it? I'd assume most people have black (por possibly silver) components, on an open AV rack/shelving, it will certainly stand out.

Here's an edit from another site, in black, much, much better (I'll share the Tweet):

I imagine skinning this (with stickers?) wouldn't really work here. There don't seem to be any planar surfaces on the outer casing. Perhaps you can just run it from within the shipping box? Problem solved. :)

I think white may work - I have the OG 360 here, looks a bit toy-ish in the design department fifteen years on but the color has never been the problem among the black Hifi gear. White/Black on that shape and with tuner LED lighting on the other hand... ;)

Which reminds me - my PS4 Pro has a very unevenly illuminated lightbar. I overpainted most of it since it just looked ridiculous when glowing in the semi-dark. I hope they at least are not cutting any corners in that regard on their new machine.

For mainly they give you the option to choose "matte finish" instead of that ugly "glossy" many other places have...

I've skinned my PS4Pro, Mac Mini, Switch, Xbox One S, and laptops and they all look awesome!

I would prefer it in Black as well. I will be getting one anyway. It looks more like a High Tech Modem lol.
I remember when I got my Xbox one on Launch day, and my husband (who is only a PC gamer, and doesn't keep up with all this new stuff) saw it one day downstairs and asked if we got a VCR lol.

I freakin’ missed the event due to work, even though I was working from home, I had no time to tune-in.

@Burningtime [Thoughts on the new console?]

Lemme recap my thoughts:

1.) It’s like Sony seriously listened to their ‘fan base’ and not only made a console that makes everything else Look archaic, but they manufactured it in white! The new PS5 makes my PS4 Pro look like an Atari.😁 Props to Sony‘s engineers big time for the design/color.

2.) I just want to know when gaming sites are going to start respecting Capcom more. No one saw RE: The village coming and yet they’ve been putting out masterpieces with RE:2/Re:3 remakes, RE:biohazard for the last three years, and now this stunning demo? In terms of AAA titles, Capcom I would put at the top with Rockstar and Naughty dog (With CDProjektRed not far behind). That’s how good they are, and their storylines are always on point.

3.) The ‘Digital console‘ is brilliant. And obviously that’s the era that were is a digital world where Physical media of games is becoming absent more and more.

4.)The pricing-

The only thing I think that’s going to hurt Sony, is the economic downturn and when you look at the price of what consoles cost (In terms of tech/design/accessories), I think it might staple some other sales, so I’m hoping the pricing is competitive enough where in the least they have some type of pre-order offer/bonus for ‘console trade-in, which should be helpful around the holiday time frame.

Console: I think it's honestly the ugliest console since the PS3 but that's ok. I'll try and hide it behind my TV. I'm probably not buying it day one like I thought I would unless Demon's Souls is a day one release. I know Microsoft is also releasing another all-digital console like their previous One S, but it definitely caught me off-guard seeing Sony announce it as well which I think is a very smart move on their part. I'm still saying $499 for the 4k Blu-Ray version and hopefully $399 for the all-digital for both Sony and Microsoft. I would love to get the all-digital, but I want to play my PS4 games on this so that's not an option. I'll have to get the drive. I really hope they offer a large SSD for these things because games are huge now. All these 4k assets on Triple A games are pushing the sizes to around 100gigs a pop. That's under 10 games on a 1TB SSD. Luckily both systems offer external storage support but it's gonna get expensive I think. I do respect both companies for taking a wild swing with the new designs. I don't like the PS5 look, but I respect how weird it is hah. Also, look up the dimensions of this thing. IT'S HUGE. Much bigger than the PS4.

Games: Demon's Souls. Yeah, it was heavily rumored but it's great to see it. Blue Point are wizards with remaking games. This was easily my favorite of the showcase but I'm a huge FromSoftware fanboy and I still play Dark Souls and Bloodborne all the time so that's why. A little bit of a change on the boss designs but that's ok.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales (coming this holiday!) was a surprise. I think I agree with a lot of people that this will be a big DLC kind of "side game" which is something that Insomniac has done before. This won't be Spider-Man 2 which will probably be a PS5 exclusive coming later on. I think this one will also come to PS4. Resident Evil 8 looks great. This was also leaked a while back including the name "Village" with the Roman numerals for "8" but it looks great. I love the creepy gothic vibe to it. Reminds me of Resident Evil 4. Hm, not sure what else. Gran Turismo looks like Gran Turismo. Rachet & Clank was a great preview which I think showed off the PS5 more than any other game here with the near instantaneous level switching via the super fast SSD. I haven't played the other Ratchet games but I hear they are really fun.

All in all I was really kinda disappointed at first viewing, but I've watched the whole presentation again (twice! cause I'm a damn nerd!) and I'm coming around more on it each time. I think I just hyped myself into a state where I could only be disappointed which is more my fault than Sony's.

Yeah, I've use their products before, really excellent quality / very accurate fitment - I've also used iCarbon, also terrific (I have a '15 MBP in use at the house with their outer carbon look skin :) )

I think there’s huge potential for the games that you mentioned, I’m not into sports games like I used to be years ago, but NBA 2K21 is it realistic as ever. I think in terms of ‘showcasing’ the potential the new Sony console offers, they all look great. I think the main advantage Sony has always had, is the rights to certain games that Microsoft doesn’t, and that always is a ‘leading edge’ for them. I still think the price point is usually dependent on how successful the console will be given how the economy is, especially when you look at the gaming industry in general.

@Weaselboy

You will get the white console and like it!😁

@BlankStar

I never even thought of the console laying down horizontal versus vertical. I remember when the Xbox Series X demoed, others were unsure if it could be laid horizontally, which you would think these design engineers would definitely make it necessary, giving everyone has different platform set ups.

Just saw this on Reddit. I did not realize form the photos posted so far how big this thing is.

Especially the height. Which is good at least we have the option of horizontal Mode as Blankstar mentioned. It’s such an obtuse looking design, but I think that’s what makes it so unique from the typical ‘box style‘ we’ve seen for years.

I wish there was like a ‘hard demo shell‘ that retailers could put out ahead of time to at least show what the console looks like. I don’t even need to have ‘hands-on’ with it, I just physically want to see it long before launch.

Yeah, I'd figure larger, slower spinning fans, so equivalent airflow to smaller/faster, but quieter. I know lowering noise is always on the design table, so maybe they did, size isn't a concern, let's make it big, with plenty of space for proper cooling design.

The design is interesting. It feels very futuristic - kind of reminds me of a skyscraper.

Im not fan of wraps/skins, but that’s actually sleek looking versus the cheap matte black plastic on the Pro. [I was dusting the other day, and it still shocks me how heavy/big the Pro is, but it’s about to get a work out with TLOUS2 delivering to my door on Friday the 19th.😁]

I never bought the Pro, told myself I‘ll wait for the inevitable Slim version that‘s smaller and quieter.

Still waiting... :(
