I haven’t had a optical drive in my PCs for the past 9 years or so, but I think there‘s still a strong case for them in consoles. The ability to sell/trade unwanted games and finding cheap pre owned games at retail stores. At least here in Australia games can launch in retail stores for ~$79 vs $99 digital.
Really keen on Gran Turismo, Project Athia, Stray, Kenya: Bridge of Spirits, Pragmata and Horizon.
I mentioned Kenya and Horizon above, but Project Athia looked super neat as well. As far as physical copies, yeah, we've even been doing that on the Switch, for all the reasons you mentioned.
Console design doesn't really speak to me. Looks like it could be a new skyscraper in Dubai. I actually like the new XBOX design better.
The console design looks horrific in my opinion.Makes the PS3 Foreman grill edition in piano black and spiderman font almost attractive. Almost.
What were they smoking... A huge glowing burrito wrap that sticks out like a sore thumb no matter where you place it. Doubles up as a female repellant I bet.
It's really "over designed", I mean, I sort of get wanting to create some brand identity with the external design, maybe having it stick in your head during decision time (for those who are XBox __or__ PS5), but it's not like it needs to be overtly visible in your house. Some of the design appears to be some neat functional engineering, for things like cooling, so that's pretty neat I guess. I'd prefer a more "appliance" type design, like my other AV components (AVR, ATV, etc.)
Someone above suggested "the fans" wanted white - was there significant clamoring for it? I'd assume most people have black (por possibly silver) components, on an open AV rack/shelving, it will certainly stand out.
Here's an edit from another site, in black, much, much better (I'll share the Tweet):
