Slim Pro? Was such a thing planned? The Pro seems rather compact already and there was at least one iteration on it to keep fan noise down.

When they released the Pro, I just assumed there would be a slim version a few years down the line.

I am not aware of aby hardware revisions the Pro has had, and reportedly some of them are quite noisy.

I think they may have had three revisions by now, not exactly sure. The cooling was improved in a model released in late 2018, those complaints you probably heard relate to the original model (from 2016?). Recently I was told there had been another update that e.g. the most recent limited editions are using, e.g. the Last of Us 2 one.

These all look the same on the outside though, you have to check the model numbers. At least when I bought mine I explicitly searched for (and received) the updated one. Has never been noisy for me but then I run the Pro at 1080p anyway so I'm probably not stressing it too much.

Those prices would be so awesome if they ever announced that. I have a feeling it's gonna be more expensive that I originally thought. My first predictions were $499 Disc, $399 digital.

I'm hearing this too. It may be even $549 disc, $399 digital.

A big discount for going digital. You can only buy games through the Playstation Store (sony = Big profit), and of course, games don't have any resell/trade-in value...

Ya, I was originally thinking $499/$449, but I think you’re right that they’ll knock the digital only version down $100 because of the buckets of money they’ll make from digital only purchases.

And a $399 entry point will put the pressure on Microsoft.

And it's why I have to go disc, because I want the ps5 to play my ps4 games (I buy a mix of digital and physical). Going forward, I'll probably buy PS5 games digitally, but I want a console that I can play both.

I just hope that it will have at least 2 user accessable SSD slots, 4tb SSD are ridiculously expensive right now, would like to get a 2tb now and then get additional 2-4tb when prices come down. Hate the idea of getting a 2tb card and then getting rid of it and replacing with 4tb down the road.

Thank goodness we're also getting PS5 Cyberpunk if you buy the PS4 version (similar to what Xbox owners are getting).

Only reason I'm not cancelling my pre-order for the PS4-version

We'll have to wait to be sure 100%, but the way Cerny explained it, it seems like there is one internal expansion-slot. Now, even though the resolution of loads of textures will be higher, I still hope games will be smaller on the PS5 just because developers don't have to copy assets multiple times to avoid the seektime. Like the US Postal mailbox textures that are more than 400 times in the game files of Spiderman. In Spiderman Morales, that mailbox will just be once in the game files.
So let's hope those 825GB's don't need expansion any time soon.

Is it known how the PS4 games compatibility will work? Will any PS4 game work on the PS5? It seems Cyberpunk only needs an update for better visuals but that it will work without as well.
My PS4 games are almost exclusively digital, so they must be available to download from the store on the PS5 if I want to play them there.

My PS4 games are almost exclusively digital, so they must be available to download from the store on the PS5 if I want to play them there.

There are several ways it will work:

1.Almost every game (maybe all?) will work in a PS5. Yes you’ll be able to download them from your library.

2. About 100 of the most popular ps4 games will work in “boost mode” and Sony will continually test more.

3. A lot of the developers are choosing to give you a PS5 version of a game if you buy the PS4 version. This is a different game with some improvements likely beyond what a PS4 game in “boost mode” will bring.

I got a 4TB external hard drive with loads of PS4-titles that I intend to hook up to my PS5 so they better make sure that stuff all works! And it wouldn't bother me to download patches/updates to make them compatible. Downloading every single game again... They better pimp their PSN speeds then, cause I don't want to wait 2 weeks for the downloads to complete ;-)

That will make it easier to justify the upgrade to PS5 🙂. I have the regular version of the PS4, so that should give me at least the pro version of my games. Plus PSVR is also compatible, so those games will benefit as well.

I don’t think the price differential will be that much. I read somewhere that the digital vs retail difference is around $8 per unit, and that’s for a full-price game, no discounts. So just to make back that $100 they’d have to sell 12.5 games per console. The attach rate (number of games sold per console) for PS4, which has been around for 7 years, is less than 10. So it’s very unlikely that the digital version will be that much cheaper, unless it’s supported by a mandatory subscription or somthing like that.

Also, Microsoft has much deeper pockets than Sony and was a distant second in the last gen, if anyone’s going to be undercutting the competition it’ll be the Xbox. I’m going for $599 / $549, and $549 for the Xbox.

(I am most likely wrong)

We're approaching the one month marker on the reveal of the console. Imagine we get some new information next week, what would you want it to be? Back of the console (ports), price, release date, more games, something else?

I'm most interested in the release date but feel like it's still too early for them to pick a date even if the rumors are Nov 20th...

Aside from the obvious (release date and price of console), I’m excited to see the new OS software features. I thought the PS3 UI was a lot better than PS4. I hope they’ve thought of something better for PS5.

I’m also curious to see if we see a price increase for games this gen. We’ve been at $60 for 2 generations now. We might see $65 this time around.

Lastly, with the announcement of a digital only console, I think it’d be very cool to see the introduction of a digital marketplace where you could sell games you’re done with. In my dreams, right? The developers would riot. Maybe possible with transaction fees that are high enough? It’s the kind of thing that would get people to dive in to a digital only console though.

Everything you listed would be wonderful. They really need to get going with this if they want people to start preordering. I'd imaging there is an incredible demand for both the new PS5 and XBOX but 2020 being 2020, nothing seems to go according to plan anymore.

Nov.20th seems like a pretty solid date for console release to me.

I almost guessed $70 in my original post but I wanted to be optimistic.

I’m ultimately ok with $70. It’s been a long time since we had a price increase. $60 in 2006 is $76 in 2020 so $70 is fair.

I get that prices have to go up. Most studio's made their first games with a team of 10-20 people, now they need 10-20 people just to program the menus and UI of the game. These triple A productions are on the level of Hollywood blockbuster studio's and maybe even surpassing them...

It's looking like the release date of either both PS5 and Xbox or at least one of them is gonna be Nov.17th. Let's hope they announce soon and get the preorders going. Both are probably going to release the same week but it would be wild if it was the same day as well.
