This is why I ended up getting a PS5! Haven't had anything since a PS3 sold years ago, not a huge gamer and could've managed with a PS4 but the prices I was seeing when it came out so long ago...

Signed up for the Amazon invite and very quickly got one to buy the Horizon/disc version, though I'm just selling the dl card. Worth it to me to get it so quickly when Best Buy is still doing membership only type sales drops

Surprised by how loud it can be after all the mac studio discourse 😅
The disc drive version is quite loud, not sure why they couldn't insulate it (spinning disc noise) better.

Is that still true? I thought they were making money on them by now or at least breaking even.
Even if they are now, you realize they were not at the time it was released. They are still having issues with supply so they are not going to go ahead and increase the storage at this point. Usually that happens when sales start to slip in order to build the sales back up.

Well yeah the existing storage amount was a compromise to get the speed they wanted, Sony has admitted as much. Increasing the storage amount will be interesting for sure, maybe they would end up pre-populating the nvme slot instead of adding nand.

Sony is losing money for every PS5 they are selling. "cheaped out" is not a good description.
I disagree. Sony's business model for PS has always involved minimal or negative profits on consoles So Sony, given its size and global reach, could have found ways to meet its cost and list price goals while building in a larger SSD. For example, Sony could have cut some deals with SSD manufacturers. Or it could have spent less on designing and fabricating the enclosure. Or given the crazy amounts console flippers have been getting from buyers, Sony could have easily made the list price 75 or 100 bucks higher. The list goes on...

:)

I'm too lazy to dig into Sony's financials right now but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony gets close to breaking even on console sales with the Slim editions. Most of the development costs can be allocated to the launch edition plus, if I remember correctly, Sony often removes ports or hardware features from Slim consoles.

I think Sony learned it's lesson with the PS3 WRT initial launch pricing.

This article is from a year ago, with Sony stating the PS5 (disc version) is no longer being sold at a loss. The Digital Edition was still seeing a loss though (at least as of that article).

Even if they currently don't sell at a loss, it was confirmed that they sold at a loss on release

Microsoft sold their console at $500, so Sony had to follow suit. And I'm pretty sure they already had a nice deal with SSD manufacturers... Don't forget that the price of SSD-chips was way higher than today when those first consoles were being built. As an example: Western Digital Black NVMe SSD SN850 1TB without heatsink was, here in Belgium, €300 at the end of 2020, and today they're less than €130. That's a big difference compared to the price of the console.
I understand, that you personally would've been ok to pay more for a version with more storage, but from a business point of view, they made a good choice. And why would they bother releasing a bigger version when every console that hits the stores is practically sold before it hits the shelves. Maybe next year when we start seeing consoles in the stores that aren't getting sold. That's good time to release a 2TB-version, again, from a business point of view.

Ha, given Sony's strategic record both at the corporate level and the division level over the last two decades or so, I'm not sure Sony shareholders would agree Sony is good at making choices. If the SSD decision was the right way to go, I'd say it was a matter of luck, not skill.

Now given Sony is trying to move PS owners to online service subscriptions and digital content delivery as much as possible, I think building in at least a terabyte of available storage would have been the way to go. Further, it's interesting that the disc drive model's price difference is enough to eliminate the initial "loss" on each unit. That could either be due to accounting tricks (if Sony makes the BD drive, it would be simple) or because the cost of each drive is a lot lower than the price increase. If it's the latter case, I think that's an indication that Sony could provide a bigger SSD while hitting its retail price target.

In any case, Sony is currently leaving money on the table because a lot of PS5 owners are spending hundreds of dollars on non-OEM SSDs.

Good news today. My kid got a Sony invite last night for a chance to buy a PS5 at 11am today on the PlayStation store... and he successfully purchased it. I needed a Dualsense controller for Spider-man PC... so he added a Midnight Black for me to qualify for free shipping... Finally... haha...
If you're looking to add a SSD, I've been using the WD BLACK 1TB SN850 with OEM heatsink since late last year without any problems. Installation is pretty easy; the main thing to keep in mind is that the PS5 case cover is attached with L-shaped hooks so the removal motion is more of a slide horizontally THEN pull upwards. Sony's instructions make it look like it's a combined motion.

Thanks... He owes us for his purchase... he can't even buy games. LOL... but he said he has a few games he can update from his PS4 to his PS5... I'll get an SSD for his birthday next month... Thank you for the tip!!!

Another vote for the SN850 here. Ive been using the 2TB version and it hasn't missed a beat!

I've installed a Sabrent unit in a friends console, which comes with a dedicated heatsink cover too - in hindsight I would probably go this route if I were to start afresh TBH....

The SN850 has been officially licensed as PS5-compatbile in the meantime. I'm waiting out for Black Friday, gonna buy me a 2 or 4TB version, depending on how big the discounts will be.

Finally completed Ghost of Tsushima, including the Iki Island Expansion Pack. Great game!
Probably not one I'll play through again any time soon so now up for sale - hence why I tend to buy disc versions of games!
Just picked up Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection - have played them before on the PS4, but time for another play through on PS5!
After which I'll probably replay The Last of Us 2 again - my all time favourite!

There have been talk about a price increase lately. Do you think there will be a price increase? and how much of a price increase do you think it will be? Hope it doesn't increase... it was hard enough to find one at msrp.

My guess would be no but these are crazy times we live in.

Apparently they wanted to charge a higher price for the PS5 from launch, but Microsoft forced them to reduce it. No idea if it’s true, but if they do increase the PS5 RRP then they’ll be pricing themselves out of the market potentially IMO. A console price increase with 70 dollar games next to Microsoft’s value and Game Pass, that’s a tough sell, even more so with more Sony games going to PC.

Any upcoming games to look forward too??

Would love another Naughty Dog game......

A Naughty Dog game would be cool... but I kind of wish Sucker Punch would bring back the InFamous series... something new for the PS5 and the DualSense controller. A game with easy controls and fun. I mean, we all pretty much enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima.. right? Maybe I'm showing my age too much... LOL

Any news on The Last of Us 3?
I haven't been following closely but the last I heard, Naughty Dog had writers working on a plot and story. It was still in the early exploratory stages, though, and no tech development had begun. That might not be the latest and greatest...
