What the hell is Baby Steps?? Watched the State of Play last night, half asleep and without sound...did I miss something? It looked so weird and...not very good at all? Such a strange way to open that showcase...

Well I‘ve boxed up my Series X, just have to package it and weigh it for postage cost then it’ll go on eBay. I plugged my old launch PS4 in and signed up to PSN Premium, been playing the God Of War Ragnarok demo, very cool. So think I’ll get the remainder if the PS5 cost for Christmas and grab me one. If I like Nintendos new console I’ll buy that myself.

Wonder if the rumoured new PS5 will be out then with the removable disk drive? Seems to have gone quiet in that front?

the people in charge of sony are doing horrible job,, from the marketing to running the OS software, only thing carrying it are the games imo.

I'm curious, how is the OS horrible?

I can't quite see where you're coming from on marketing. You don't need to market the hardware directly, if you can market the software, as that is what drives hardware sales. From Spider-man to Starfield, put out great games, people will buy your console to play them. I mean, that's why we don't even see Xbox console adverts anymore.

I think the millions of consoles sold, more than double the Xbox I believe, would prove their marketing team knows exactly what they are doing. Also the OS is fine, no 15 rows of unremovable ads on the dashboard for one!

Agreed, but there are allot of factors in a console being successful, consumer loyalty, companies understanding the customer wants, and absolutely selling more good software, which ultimately sells more consoles.

History shows this with sega consoles losing out, simply due to lack of support from main stream, and Sega dropping support, and upsetting the consumer. In terms of software, same goes for gamecube, n64, 3dO, etc. All while grate consoles in their own right and had an ok catalogue of games (some more then others and i own them all and love them), they ultimately did not have enough good titles, and lost out to main stream appeal because of it in comparison to Sony. Just look at total title releases in comparison.

Just some examples, and there are allot more from others who can probably articulate this better then me:

Sega Saturn did not get any other Resident evil games beyond re1, they did get arcade perfect capcom fighting games, while playstation got Resident evil 1, 2 and 3 and arguably where the further reaching titles, with the fighting games being more of a niche.

It could be argued that the Sega Saturn was far more powerful, but no one could program well enough for it until after Sega dumped it for the dreamcast. Last bronx, Panza dragoon saga and deep fear are good examples of the hardware being used properly, and can be compared to psone, but look at when they where released, after the dreamcast was announced, with the famous “the Saturn is not our future” meeting..

This problem was also echoed in the PS3, which did ok, but again Metal gear solid 4 is probably one of the best examples of the hardware being used properly, compared to other titles, which could not or would not learn how to, as the ROI was faster with xbox. As a result games more often played better on the 360, resulting in the 360 arguably winning out that generation.
But then Microsoft got a big head and tried to licence each physical disk, needing an always on connection, so ps4 for the win then.

I think ps5 and xbox are playing it pretty close, i have both and love them, but we are now moving more and more in to the streaming market, which will continue to make game preservation a problem.

Just so many titles disappearing, as these online stores (PSN for psp, Nintendo online shops) continue to fade, with the titles on their also disappearing.

The Os can be clunky at times, but i think thats more to do with the data analytics , advertising running in background. Part of this may have something to do with the set up for the person. Not sure what SSD you may be running, or what the internet connection is like, as these can be factors to how well the OS may be running.

Sega's problem was they came out with a scattershot of hardware (32x, Saturn, Dreamcast) in a short amount of time. Sega also misjudged 3D taking off so the first two didn't do it as easily as the Playstation. The Dreamcast not supporting DVD didn't help either.

That's not what hurt Sega's Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was way ahead of it's time especially with online play. They had an amazing first party lineup.

There were two things killed off the Dreamcast:

1) Their antagonistic approach with EA. They clearly said they did not need EA and were all in on 2K Sports. At the time EA pulled it's weight so much so that Microsoft gave in to EA by pulling all its sports title just to get EA Sports games on the original XBOX. That's how powerful EA was back then.

2) The choice of using CD's along with WinCE as the OS allowed for easy piracy.

Don't hate on the GD-ROM, lol. Yeah those things didn't help at all either.

Sometimes I wish they would get back into the hardware game.

If the Xbox leak is true Sony (from a hardware perspective) doesn't seem to have much to worry about.

I think the Xbox leak is why I'm so frustrated with MS as of late. I get that they want to reduce hardware costs, but moving to a streaming only model just isn't it. There are whole swathes of the world, let alone the US, that doesn't have the infrastructure to allow for streaming media, let alone games.

It was an easy layup for Sony the first time MS tried the always online thing. I figure it will be another easy layup, lol.

I've not followed the leak too indepth. Is the xbox update that is a digital only console replacing the existing xbox or in addition too it? What I mean by that is, Sony offers a disk and diskless console, would this be similar?

As for MS embracing streaming, its the future, I really do think game discs will go the way of the dodos and become extinct. Its only a matter of time

Reportedly it will replace the existing X so there would be no Xbox with a disc drive.

Basically, in the recent leak they're planning a diskless only console. Previously, when launching the XBOne, they went over their future plans, which included an AppleTV style, streaming only system.

Part of Azure's backbone will allow a remote play style stream. So the game runs on a remote server, with the player using the streaming box.

That's unfortunate. I own a Xbox, but I found for me, and my play style. the PS5 is a better console. I still have my Xbox sitting in a corner. Maybe I'll keep that instead of giving it away, just in case I change my mind

So you're saying that this box isn't just a diskless xbox, but rather it will be a game streaming service? Oh I would hate that very much

The leaked refresh of the XSX is discless. The leaked next-gen Xbox is hinted at incorporating cloud elements. It would be hybrid. They talked about doing similar things with the Xbox One and Azure and that didn't really pan out then.

One thing to keep in mind is that the leaked docs are from May 2022 and Phil Spencer has said a lot of things have changed since then.

There's also been loads of rumors about Sony making a disc-less PS5 slim too, potentially with an external drive option.

What do you think makes the PS5 better? I am really digging quick resume on the XSX and wish that was on other platforms. Haven't used a PS5 though and really disliked the PS4 especially the DS4.

Published by the unhinged legends Devolver Digital, it's the newest game by Bennett Foddy, the creator of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy and Ape Out. Baby Steps is a comedic physics based game about being an adolescent adult exploring a new mysterious world and trying to walk with a unique control scheme.

I don't know what to think? Really odd.

It's supposed to be funny since you control every small step he makes which means a lot of times you'll fall over leading to funny moments. Bennett Foddy is known for unique movement control schemes. His claim to fame was Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, based off a flash game called Sexy Hiking.

In Getting Over It you were in a pot and could only move forward using a sledgehammer to catch yourself onto things, which meant a lot of times you would slip or miss and fall, losing a lot of progress. But while Getting Over It was more frustrating, Baby Steps aims to be more humorous, making failure fun.

The problem is as we have seen with Apple is that the Big Dogs decide when to push the industry forward. Apple has done that several times in the past with 3.5" floppy disk, USB ports, built in CD/ROM drives and now going all in on eSim with their iPhone's.

What we have is the acknowledgement that physical media is DOA and it is happening much faster than expected. The question becomes why and the answer then becomes Gamestop and all those businesses who made their living by selling used games.

If you recall, there was a point in time where Gamestop was bragging about their record sales of used games and they were raking in all the money. Then game developers and game publishers were crying foul they they were not seeing and money for the used games Gamestop was selling. Then Gamestop essentially gave the middle finger to game devs and publishers and told them tough and that a used game sale turned into a new game sale which was BS.

So game devs and publishers cried foul and leaned on the console makers to take action. EA was the first publisher to say that digital sales would be the wave of the future but it could take 10-15 years or more.

That's when you started seeing Sony and Microsoft began to test the waters with their Marketplace both on the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3. They began to watch sales increase as a result. It's little wonder that as digital sales began to take off with the PS4 and XBOX One, that Gamestop got worried and that began its decline.

tl;dr, Gamestop started the digital trend and the console makers finished it. Streaming and digital stores are the way forward. Streaming services is just a progression of the digital storefront.

As for MS embracing streaming, it’s the future, I really do think game discs will go the way of the dodos and become extinct. Its only a matter of time

The mid gen update will be an all digital Series X, and they will be phasing out the current disk drive Series X model.

The next gen they have sledded out though will use ARM processing and AMD graphics, and it will be a ‘hybrid’ console using the cloud to boost performance. So I’m guessing all digital and no internet reduced power, also I’d question backwards compatibility if it uses ARM. It sure how cemented it is as it’s not due till 2028, but to me it sounds a bit too enthusiastic relying on the internet and cloud.
Sony have just got some very meaty details though to work against.
