That is great news! And yes, literally the last game that would have ever made me consider an XBox.
It’s the main reason why I categorically couldn’t consider selling my Xbox. With GTA coming out next year, I might sell my Xbox Series X and replace it with a PS5 Pro. However play anywhere is important for me. Some games, I would rather not have to buy them twice e.g pc and play station.

Microsoft is going down the path Sega took years ago. Just let go of the hardware and focus only on the games. I remember seeing Sonic for the first time on the PlayStation, was a surreal moment. Now all these Xbox titles are coming over and it sure feels like history repeating. And while I've only had the original big fat Xbox, I've had every PlayStation (except for the PS3, was an era where I didn't game anymore) and currently rock a PS5 Pro and I hate to see the Xbox go. One simple reason: competition. Nintendo is in a different segment of the market and can co-exist easily next to Sony, but if the Xbox is abandoned, Sony won't have anyone anymore to compete. They'll be able to start squeezing even harder and try to get that last penny out of our pockets and we'd have nothing against them but stop playing games we'd all love to play... The customer always loses when there's no competition.

And rumors are Sony are working on a Switch 2 competitor... Sure hope Nintendo will be able to keep on going with their exclusives, because a powerful portable PlayStation... The "shut up and take my money" meme comes to mind.

I think the PC could be seen as a viable competitor.

There are rumours and icons appearing in the shop showing titles that suggest you can buy it on the PS5 and get the PC version free or vice versa.

Sorry but Sony have a LOT and I do mean a LOT to prove it's support for a mobile device. The Portal is exempt as it is purely a streaming device and requires little support, but remember the Vita, well they could not have screwed that up any more then they did and basically throwing it in the business trash after a year.

Nintendo has nothing at all to worry about, 10 million Switch 2's sold in 5 months, that is a new record in console history. Plus it has its endless list of IP to put on the system and third party support will grow.

Sony are the ones that have to worry if they release a stand alone handheld, and I am not sure relying on PS5 titles is enough. Personally I think they should concentrate on the home console now Valve are a bonafide threat to the market too.

I don't believe that. Rockstar is spending a fortune on developing the game. PC gamers expect having to double dip. Furthermore maintaining a game on multiple platforms is not cheap. Infact, Online and single player are two different games in their own rights and will need to be resourced accordingly.

I beleive it when i see it.

There is plenty of articles and videos about it doing the rounds, it would make sense for them to have their own PC store and do something similar to MS with play anywhere.

I had Xbox first then bought a gaming pc. I love that I could play titles thst flight simulator and Minecraft eithiut re buying.

Although I love play anywhere, I understand why Sony doesn’t offer something similar. It can be economically unviable.

I run a software business and the cost of developing and maintaining software can be very expensive and scales exponentially with the amount complexity of the product.

This is why some businesses only launch on a single platform. For example my product is web based. If I launched an Android and iOS app, I would need seperate teams for web, iOS and Android. Then each would require sub teams for developing new features, testing and maintenance. It doesn’t matter how similar it is to develop for the platform. 3 bugs on one platform could take tens of engineers to resolve over months.

Xbox have offered play anywhere because Microsoft has deep pockets and can afford loss or smaller margins. Other publishers of big titles cannot.

I would rather pay twice for s game than see compromises elsewhere like in-app purchases for 30% of the game, lower quality gaming etc

Now that they have officially implemented full on cloud streaming, the Portal looks like a really interesting proposition. The only reason I am hesitating to buy it is that I don't know how much I would actually use it. I don't travel that much, and I don't know how much I would game on the small screen at home instead of just waiting for the TV to become available. :)

I think native cloud streaming make it portable compelling for me. I will eventually buy a handheld and it will mainly be for spontaniously playing indie or quicker games in 15-30min bursts. Most importantly, I could buy and use a portable without owning a PS5!

I just got me a year of premium PS+ with the Black Friday discount and it leveled up my Portal big time. It feels like I have a nextGen PSP now. Before I only used it when the tv was taken, or my wife wanted to go to bed early so I could join her, but now I catch myself picking up the Portal even when the tv is available. Even tough the screen isn't OLED, it looks really good. Only downside, but that's on the whole ecosystem: FFS SONY, JUST LET ME USE MY AIRPODS.

In the UK the portable is currently on sale at £179. Add 12 months PS+ for £80(black friday) and you'll have an awesome streaming console for less than a Series S. FYI buying games like last of us 1,2 and Spiderman 1 and 2 would be a 40-50% of the price of this. That's games that you might only play once.

I upgraded to Plus Premium for a month to test the cloud streaming on my PS5.

I am still a little confused as what games are available. When I do a search on playstation.com, it shows Forza Horizon 5 as a streamable game. But on my PS5 last night, I couldn't find it to stream. What gives? Is it available, and I am just not looking in the right place?

Also, on the Portal, how would you compare the streaming performance from the PS5 over the internet versus cloud streaming?

Also also, has anyone compared the performance of the remote app on iPad vs remote PS5 play on the Portal?

In short, I would like to access and play my PS5 games while I am on vacation. I have an 11" M1 iPad Pro with the remote app that I can pair with a PS5 controller. Are there any benefits in buying the Portal for this purpose? Is the streaming performance different in any significant way?

I don’t know about the PS Portal, but under the same WiFi, the PS Remote Play app has always worked quite well in my iPad. Maybe not at full HD resolution… but because of the small size of my 11” iPad Pro and the high pixel density of it, it looks quite good. No complaints, although even possible, I play on my 4K mini LED 27” monitor.

Earlier this year I saw a comparison where PS remote playironically outperformed Xbox cloud streaming.

The biggest selling point of using the Portal over the iPad is convinence and that it's 100% optimised for gaming. It's worth taking a punt on as a used Portal only cost twice the price of a used controller. If you don't like it, you can easily resell it.

There are three kinds of streamable games;
- games from the game catalogue: all these games are included in the premium membership. Games get added and removed each month.
- games from the classic catalogue: same as the normal catalogue, but these are games from the PS1 to PS3.
- games that you can stream when you own them. Forza is one of those.

To see the games in the catalogues: open the PS app. Go to PS Store (center button in the menu bar on the bottom), tap on the PS+ logo on the top of the page, scroll down to find the big square buttons. There's a button for each catalogue and for some other stuff like the free monthly downloadable games.

Cloud streaming works a lot better than streaming to the PS5 over the internet.
The Portal works better than the app.
The Portal is more convenient as it has the controller built-in and is made to stream. I have an iPad Pro but bringing/storing a dualsense with it, pairing it, has always been too much of a hassle for me to actually game a lot on it on vacation. I bought it on launch and loved the device but streaming didn't always work decently (even with my unifi network that is rock solid) and I had some buyer remorse, but with the 2.x software and cloud streaming added; no regrets of purchasing it at all.
