Have you people never shopped for a counter-balanced display mount before? They're not cheap. We use Humanscale ones at work, and they're something like $400 each, and meh quality to be honest. The price of the Apple one is certainly high, but assuming it's actually very good and figuring in the Apple-tax, I don't actually think it's unreasonable.

Or, do people really plan on putting a $5000 display on a crappy plastic stand?

I think the question here is, why is this not an optional stand you can buy or use the cheaper version that comes with the monitor, as most people just want a stand not a humanscale one.

I was first laughing at the prices because it’s just getting more and more expensive to be an Apple fan. But as I’m reading the comments, it’s true... Apple has now separated those who think they are “pros.” They are obviously trying to empower the people who broadcast media for such things like billboards and television, or people who have to render high res videos and stitch multi-million pixel pictures for research. Just because you have a Canon 5D or a RED camera shooting a wedding.... does NOT automatically make you a pro, you can get all of that done with a 5K iMac.

And guess what.... people who have the money for these aren’t going to buy the stand.... because they’re not going to just one of these monitors. They’re going to buy multiple VESA mounts because they’ll be buying multiple monitors and mount them on a million dollar production room wall.

It’s all about what type of investment your company requires.

My question is, why is Apple doing this? You'd think they know this would result in bad press for basically no good reason. They're not going to sell many of these displays, so they're likely not going to make much profit selling these stands.

What's their angle here? Are they really this tone deaf?

No they're bang on point. It's a fancy/flashy stand for a fairly niche computer.

Those buying it will either:

1. Buy a 3rd party alternative.
2. Go with the VESA mount.
3. Buy the stand - if the monitor delivers on all the other specs it's still a great deal for $5999 all in.

There really is no need to include such a fancy stand in the box for all these monitors. And I imagine the enginering that went into it will be sky high high and it no doubt will be great - it just won't sell in great numbers (but the monitor should).

Most companies who buy in bulk won't use them. Business and studios that will purchase these in bulk also tend to have monitor arms, mobile rack mounts, etc. These types of orgs see this as saving $800, while all the people moaning about Apple charging an extra $1000 were never going to buy one in the first place.

Because, as I have reiterated over ad nauseum - Tim Cook needs to be fired. They just don’t care anymore, about anything related to brand image. And they are going to hemorrhage marketshare because of it.

$999 for a $75 stand is INSANE.

Like...it literally would never happen under Steve Jobs.

It is insane.

*cough fire Tim Cook cough*

It still isn’t too late, Apple Board of Directors! It’s getting there, but the company can still be saved with some swift changes. Act now.

No thanks. I like him. The people this monitor is intended for will understand (and likely won't buy the stand but will buy the monitor). I'd calm down and read another article if I was you. This monitor isn't for you.

Anyone remember this early iPhone app, priced at $999? People bought it. I think the stand is a bit more useful, and evidently some people have the money.

Haha. That’s a throwback. Well remembered.

But I don’t think many “people”/individuals will be buying this monitor. It’s going to be businesses/studios. You don’t use stands anyway as the desks come with arms/mounts. They would literally have piles of these ridiculously engineered arms in a box or worse trashed as they don’t have a need for them.

I gasped too but I will refrain from judgement until someone researches the actual cost of the materials.

I don't think you understand the definition of thief. What property is Ape stealing? If you don't like the price, don't buy it. Unless Apple forces you to buy the stand, they aren't stealing anything.
They're actually not a bad price if you compare the market for these types of monitors. Go price a top of the line Eizo. Hint: Its the same price but at a lower resolution.
Maybe, but it's OBVIOUSLY priced only for a very small segment of their customer base. I've used a Macbook Pro with an Apple display for years, except now I have the LG 5k with my Macbook Pro, and there's no way I'd ever consider this.
Apple's M.O. has been that they innovate by taking emerging technologies, refine them, and bring them to the consumer-level. Sure there's always been a bit of a "premium" on their stuff, but hey... it looked cool, you knew it was well made, and it would last way longer than all the other garbage out there! That's what they've done from the original Macintosh to the ipod... iphone... ipad... etc. But this...?! This price is completely asinine! They know that the overwhelming majority of their customer base will not buy this. And they certainly won't be gaining many new customers with it. What we're actually looking at here is a PR stunt of Apple flexing their muscles trying to show their relevance in an industry that they're slowly loosing grasp of.

Aw c'mon, you guys sure know how to spoil the surprise, they were going to lower the price to $499 when no one bought one and everyone would be going "How awesome!!!"

But actually, they didn't mention the levitating tech.... the monitor doesn't actually attach to the stand, it creates a hypergravity field that suspends the monitor in midair above and in front of it.

Which, you have to admit, for $1000, is pretty darned awesome.

But seriously, folks? Aluminum and steel tarriffs.

Mac Users: We want a modular Mac.

Apple: Yeah, but the iMac is so great.

Mac Users: WE WANT A MODULAR MAC.

Apple: OK, here you go. That'll show ya.

Whining about the price of this computer misses the point. If you are price sensitive this is NOT for you. This is a Professional machine for people with VERY specific needs. Those special needs include not wanting a stand to go with the monitor.

Putting some of these in the server room, when the rack mount model launches, is something I could see us doing, but we'll never justify a 6k reference monitor. People working on HDR video will be happy to buy several of these and even happier that it is cheaper (and better) than the $10k+ monitors it replaces.

I don’t get the negative comments. If you don’t need that level of fit, finish, and functionality — don’t buy it. And how does Apple know if a user would want a stand or wall mount? Are they supposed to include both, and just charge more for the whole package? Logistically it makes sense to sell these pieces separately. Outrage over something that maybe you can’t afford or refuse to purchase just reveals your own covetousness and insecurity. There are more and less expensive monitors out there. Just pick one, do your work, and shut up about it.
I hope you're being facetious, otherwise the ignorance in this post is too unforgivable.

If you're being serious, explain the following questions please:
1) Since the beginning of time, monitors have included stands. Wall mounts were always optional. What is so hard about following the most common practice in the industry?
2) What logistically makes sense about selling these pieces separately? It literally makes no logistical sense to add more packaging and products to their warehouses and other stores that sell the item. Its another item to ship that takes up physical space.
3) Nobody said anything about being unable to afford to purchase it, they are stating that it is completely retarded with how high the pricing is for a piece of metal that holds a monitor. Did you know that we were talking about the stand and not the monitor?

I think you did your work defending a piss poor decision by Apple, good job. Telling people to shut up about it and just accept the completely outrageous price shows how out of touch you are with reality as well as shows how little you care for the opinions of others. Your comment is pretty hostile.

I've seen people in here justifying the stand price. Now I know there's no limit for Apple in pulling the rope.

where's the down vote gone
The people actually buying these machines likely will not care. The keyboard warriors with no intention of buying this will have an issue with it.

Why not rub it a little more, Apple and charge an extra $1 and make it $1,000.

Oh, and the stand better be made of Vibranium!
No, the stand is made up of failed MacBook Pro keyboards, which is why it is so expensive.

Can't be a keyboard warrior if your keyboard doesn't work.

This will go viral as fodder for every iSheep comment and criticism for years to come. They’re literally writing their own memes for the competition and presenting them at their own keynote.

At first sight I thought it must’ve been fake. It has Onion written all over it.
No, no, you have it all wrong. Apple iS SAVING you $1000!!! Lay it against some books or get a serious amount of Command Adhesive strips.

The problem with most of the reaction to this stand is that it's from people who aren't in the target market for this type of display.

Oh, sure that’s the problem.

Not that Apple are charging almost a grand for something worth about $50 in parts.

This is just reinforcing the “Apple is a fashion item” statement so often made.

Whether you’re a studio buying these for professional work or not, you’re essentially gifting apple almost a thousand dollars for that particular item for nothing. You’re being ripped off.

This is a non-story. Apple is selling the best monitor ever built for $5,000 and a monument that is a genuine piece of industrial artwork with no expenses spared for $999. If Apple sold them together for $6000 then nobody would even blink. Yet here come the bashers saying Apple is selling a "stand" for $999.

Face it bashers, you were never going to buy the monitor, the monument, or anything Apple makes anyway. Go enjoy your $100 garbage monitor, meanwhile people with real work to do know the value of Apple products.
