It has VESA mount holes on the back. You don't need to use this stand for it -- you can use whatever stand you want.
Except that you have to get the $200 VESA mount adapter to use any other VESA mount... ridiculous considering that they use to sell the VESA mount adapters for ~$40 for the Cinema/Thunderbolt displays...

My question is, why is Apple doing this? You'd think they know this would result in bad press for basically no good reason. They're not going to sell many of these displays, so they're likely not going to make much profit selling these stands.

What's their angle here? Are they really this tone deaf?
I can only assume that any PR is good PR for Apple. They know that even non-tech media might mention this, meaning there's going to be a hell of a lot of news on the screen - And they'll mention the new Mac Pro too.

HAHAHAHA OMG people are really defending the Stand LOLOLOLOL I can't... I really can't
HELLOOOOO they are selling a freaking monitor without a stand which cost 1000. Wake up...
I defended them on many things in the past but please don't tell me this is normal and reasonable.

They deserve every ****-storm that is coming to them. I hope the internet won't let them get away with it and they will re-think this brain-dead decision until fall. In what world does THIS stand cost 1000 ffs smh?

Keep defending this s*** and prepare for the next iMac with no stand included...maybe you can glue the new one to your old one.

I knew somebody would be ok with it! Seriously? I’ve got every Apple gadget known to mankind, I’ve paid over £1.2k for a phone, more for an iPad Pro, said goodbye to the best part of £4K for a Macbook Pro and even coughed up £7k for an iMac Pro. But a chuffing grand for a stand?!

Best keynote for years and they went and did that? Even with my fan boy blinkers on, I can’t think of any circumstances where I’d want to pay for a stand at all (ok I might be talked into a few hundred if I was drunk) but that really is a joke! Is it encrusted with the tears of dragons or something?
This sums up the thread for me. “I have all the gadgets”. This isn’t a gadget.

If you're going to spend drop $20k on a workstation, VESA is the way to go anyway. That route is so much better than Apple's overpriced stand.

Yesterday someone knocked a workstation off a desk and today I've been going through the insurance claim process to buy a new one since it's not cost effective to repair (a Lenovo all in one PC).

If it was VESA mounted... they wouldn't have been able to knock it off the desk in the first place.

This was the only rediculous thing from Apple today. Is be surprised if they keep the high price but Apple might and might have a few people buy it.
I hope they don't sell any of these just to prove to apple they can't do this to their customers and have them rollover and buy whatever they release.
Anyone that does in fact buy this I hope they get the backlash from everyone around them that they are stupid for buying into this nonesense.
Ill be watching apples stock fall over the next while.

Apple needs to not piss off its customers. Its simple really. Give customers a highish price for quality. Not price themselves out of most consumers for a stupid stand and display.
This thing should be 2k-2500 max WITH stand.

Home insurance I thought didn't cover the cost of damage electronics from falls like that? Unless its business insurance? I tried getting a tv covered under insurance that fell when I was mounting it. Home owners Insurance said they wouldn't cover anything like that.

Honestly, basic decency would have been to include the VESA mount in the base price and add 800 to replace the VESA Mount with the stand.

Right now, you pay 5k for a monitor that simply CANNOT be used unless you buy a 200$ mount or 1000$ stand. It's simply absurd.

I'm not surprised to see people complain here and elsewhere on the Internet, but the thing is that the majority of the people who get a couple of XDR's won't need a stand. Some of us not even a VESA mount. Nope. We here let a contractor make a stand for two rows of XDR's above each other, with room for power cables. What would we do with six stands that we don't need? Think about it. This is a professional monitor for a professional setup. And no. We're not paying the 6K either. Apple is thrilled to see the first setup going life on Youtube in a couple of weeks from now...

True. And that new $5000 monitor will end up on the floor.

P.S. I am not defending the stand price. Just pointing out what Chinese knockoffs provide.

Of course I was being a little sarcastic. Just pointing out that there will be cheaper alternatives. And it’s obvious that you’ll need to spend a bit of dosh on a decent stand but over the years I’ve bought good stands that cost far less than $999.

Thank heavens the stand is made from solid gold... Oh, wait...

Hey, why is a stand worth more than my 1080P HDTV? There's something wrong with this picture.

Thieves... that's what they've become. Dirty thieves.

Apple has to do something to get back to that $1 trillion dollar company value. I doubt very few people are going to buy that display without a stand.

I think we can truly imagine they are disconnected from reality.. when you earn 400M like cook, and everyday you see reports that the company just made several billions in one day, you just change your perception. This is the only explanation frankly... because that's mad, a stand is worth more than an iPhone (a steel with a spring inside it), it's just mad.

Yes, they are.

I loved how the audience collectively gasped when it was revealed not only that the stand was sold separately — but that it cost $999.

I rewatched that part of the presentation several times, and I think you can hear a lot of gasps when the price of the screen is announced, mixed in with some cheers and polite clapping. I think the stand price really turned off the folks that had gasped at the screen price, as well as those that were just politely clapping, and no one is going to cheer for a $1000 stand.

underpriced imo. this stand is a work of ART more than it is a stand.

It’s butt ugly.

I think they were a little tone deaf when the meal they used to show off the tip calculator was something like $45 per person. Not all that extravagant, but why not go with $25 per person?

Haven’t logged in for ages but had to here. The knee jerk comments showcase the finest wanna be pros showing off how they are in fact wanna be pros.

The iMac is for you. Not the new MacPro and/or Pro Monitor.

Is 1k for a stand priced on the high end?
Yes.

But if it is high quality, performs smoothly and lasts a lifetime then it’s priced fairly compared to the 300-400$ turd options.

The comment section of this website is a playground for fail trolls. Not even pro fail trolls.

I'm a big Apple fan like many here but really $999US for the stand, that's something north of $1200 here in Australia.

This sums up the thread for me. “I have all the gadgets”. This isn’t a gadget.
You're misrepresenting my point. Ok, I shouldn't have said gadgets, especially in terms of the iMac Pro or the many other expensive things I have bought from Apple to do my work. I make my living using Apple gear and despite the increasing costs of everything, I've always had a justification that it's an investment to buy quality gear especially with the ROI for work. Even when I know Apple is gouging more than ever I can make excuses. I could justify the monitor if I needed HDR etc as that seems like a decent value proposition. But there is no justification whatsoever to spend that amount of money on a stand. Unless you know better than the crowd watching the keynote who (for the first time ever I can remember) audibly groaned. Contrary to popular opinion here, being a 'pro' doesn't mean you are happy to throw your money away. Ask yourself why the price of a stand would even make a news article on here?

Talk about drawing the short straw. It now makes sense that someone I’ve never heard of announced it! LOLOLOLOL.

well I was curious why Phil was absent from a hardware release, usually he is the one who talks about new Mac products and hardware and especially displays.

The stand price is ridiculous, but no HDMI or any in’s/outs other than Thunderbolt for 6K is more ridiculous.

Yes, that's a perfectly good rationalisation for selling the stand separately.
It's not a good reason for selling the stand for $1000 (or even for designing one that legitimately costs that much).

It's not a good reason for selling the VESA mount separately for $200 (which makes the $1000 stand look positively reasonable)- you may not need one but its what most customers will need. In fact, it's ridiculous for a "pro" display not to have an integral VESA mount.

...and sure, you don't have to buy it so it isn't "theft", but it is an insight into Apple's pricing policy that makes you wonder what sort of ridiculous markup they're getting on their other products.

As for the display itself - I'll let the people actually doing high-end HDR video creation judge whether its worth $5000, but if you just want an all-round high def display that co-ordinates with your Mac then its not even worth complaining about.

I actually like that the stand is sold separately.
I think the price is hilarious, but, chances are it will work with any other screens they make in the future, for 10-15 years even.
