Well, my first name is Ryan and my last name begins with an "O". And I used to be really into astronomy so I came up with Oryan, sorta like the constellation.

My name came from a character used by QANTAS (the airline) on the free stuff they gave to kids traveling on their planes. I got a little stationary pack years ago and it just happened to be lying around when I was signing up - I couldn't think of anything else at the time.

If I could I would probably change it to something a bit more relevant and because I think people think my name is Max, when it's really Greg. But I guess it doesn't really matter.

Like so many others, mine is my name backwards. Not really. I'm not actually called Dam Wej. I didn't choose my name, my brother did and he's possibly even madder than me...

'Cept when you're tryin' to swear at them. Damn Dam Wej just makes you sound like da fool. :p

Oh, and Max Altitude is perhaps the coolest thing on a Qantas flight. His maze is a personal favourite of mine. :D

SpaceMagic

Well... when I was 6 or 7 years old, I was in my cousin's house playing on their mac. We were playing a game which required you to enter a user name. At this time, I said I liked space and my cousin said she liked magic... so that's how SpaceMagic was born. Since that day, 13 years ago i've used SpaceMagic.

Sethypoo- a nickname.

Seth = my name
ypoo = the "oh so cute" ending

My friends, waaaaay back in 8th grade called me it one day and it kind of stuck. They don't call me it all the time, or much anymore, but every so often, I get a phone call or an email or I have coffee with an old friend, and that name comes up.

In addition to liking how it sounds, there actually is a street named Deepdale Parkway in Albertson, Long Island, although it is not your typical parkway, but rather a quiet residential road lined with very nice suburban homes. My family moved to Albertson to live with relatives in 1965 ... sadly, that arrangement proved to be toxic and we were forced to move 11 months later, but I have always had a soft spot for the general area ever since.

displaced?

Well... I'm a big fan of books by Iain Banks. A fantastic Scottish author who writes both straight-Fiction (as 'Iain Banks') and Sci-Fi (as 'Iain M. Banks'). I've probably read all his books a couple of times over at least.

'Displacement' is an instantaneous method of transportation used (occasionally) by citizens of the Culture in the sci-fi novels. The omnipotent AI's which run the civilisation and are at the humans' beck and call (unless they feel like doing something more interesting...) usually give a standard warning about a one-in-a-gazillion chance that a displacement will go wrong and kill the transportee.

displaced.co.uk is also my domain name. It also looks quite cool written down, with nice-looking ascenders and descenders on the characters.

You might see me online (forums, or games) posting or playing under a bunch of other Banks-related names: Zakalwe, Diziet, Sma, Sharrow...

There's a lot about Banks, his books, the Culture universe and the characters on wikipedia. Highly recommended :)

Me too - I start with his straight fiction (straight? The Wasp Factory is one of the most twisted books I've ever read :p ), and was a bit dubious about his sci-fi.

I then picked up The Algebraist and Consider Phlebas and was very quickly hooked.

I wouldn't have picked up the reference from displaced alone, but if you had used one of the Culture names, I would have got it straight away.

Shadow

Yep, a great game series for sure, I've been there since the start! Haven't played MGS3 yet, but enjoyed all the others - MGS would be my favorite, followed by MG, MGS2 then MG:SR.

Whats the meaning of your MR member name?
Is it a nickname, your given name, a random name or a name you like and wanted because it sounds cool?

My Member name is my real name.

Tony (2 replaces the TO) 2ny.

Bless
All the names that I wanted were already taken.

Just came back from a sushi diner and put it in for fun and it took!

(apologies for the about-to-happen offtopicness. I'll only be a moment!)

Hehe... very true... The Wasp Factory is very.... odd :) I still love The Crow Road most though!

His non-SF book, The Bridge is a nice 'crossover' book that introduces some of his SF style into the regular stuff. If you liked Consider Phlebas, check out Look To Windward, which is a companion to CP, set quite a bit later.

Use of Weapons (with Diziet Sma and her drone, Skaffen-Amtiskaw) was my first I(M)B book. Completely blew me away. I'd got really fed up with the state of written Sci-Fi. Arthur C. Clarke (I'm afraid to say) does nothing for me, and the 'cyberpunk' era felt pretty dull. But Iain M Banks, Neal Asher, Ken MacLeod and Richard Morgan have restored my faith! There's some really great British sci-fi authors around at the moment.

You wouldn't be the Diziet I ran into on the Dranor server the other day would you? I mentioned the name then, and apparently was the first person to get the reference.

I have a hunter called Cheradenine whose pet is called Sharrow...!

My nick is from a William gibson novel called Count Zero (or was it Mona Lisa Overdrive), and is a company name I use as well.

WinterMute is a self aware fragment of an AI intelligence.

Melkor is a character in Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion'. It's one of my favourite books.

He's the big guy in this pic:

Mine is simple, yankeefan (obvious, i am a fan of the yankees), and 24 for two reasons I like the show 24, AND 24 is my lucky number (unrelated to the show).
