I thought I responded to this (or a similar thread) a while back, but the little icon says otherwise.

I picked my name because I thought that people that got into forums and whatnot are pretty lame and need to get a life. I figured that I would post once or twice to see what people felt about the PB that I was waiting to have updated so I could get one (I jumped the gun what ended up being one day too early). So, I used my old login ID from undergrad that was my initials and whatever number person with those initals you were since the system was created.

About 2 years later I still think the same thing about people that do this, but have to admit that I wish I had more time to spend here. I should get around to asking a mod (probably when I prove myself more worthy than I have so far) about a possible name change to something more apropos, but I don't know what I would change it to. Unless someone comes up with a good idea here, I may have to open it up to a contest.

How did you choose your username?

There are some great usernames on these forums. We have all the colours of the rainbow, or variations on them, we have mudbug, floriflee, max altitude, people's real names and there's Royal Pineapple, who presumably should keep away from rumbletum. There's also GaseousPlatypus and skunk, plus a smellyfish who only posted once, all three of whom I'm sure are wonderful company for each other. There's also Sunrunner who presumably has never met bobindashadows and Capt Underpants who had maybe best not post in this thread.

What's the story behind your name? Mine's my long-standing nickname.

gauchogolfer

I chose gauchogolfer because it's me in a nutshell. I recently graduated with my PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara (the Gauchos), and I paid some of my way through my undergraduate degree playing golf. So, that's me.

I'll repeat that I picked a throwaway username b/c I hadn't planned on being an active member.

Same here (this is in the other thread as well). I just saw it on a pencil case that was near me at the time (it's the name of a character QANTAS airlines used on their kiddy merchandising). I don't use it anywhere else in real life or on the net. If I begged one of the mods they may be kind enough to change it to something more relevant to me, but it doesn't really matter all that much I suppose.

 Aaggh! Did a check but missed the previous thread! It was nearly two years ago though, so it's a chance for anyone who wasn't here then (like me) to tell a story

My username comes from the now defunct roller coaster at Kennywood Park in West Mifflin, PA, the Steel Phantom. It's now the Phantom's Revenge, which is a great coaster, but it's just not the same as the old Phantom. :(

My username is my motto. In everything I do I want... to be first. I put my all into everything I do. It's not about being better than everyone else, or anyone else, really, but more about making sure that I try my hardest.

I'm tempted to do the same thing - I keep telling myself that when I reach some mystical posting level I'll get around to it (but I really can't think of an alternative). But, your story was more personal than mine. I just used my school assigned username from undergrad b/c it wouldn't really identify me and once i had gotten a grasp on using my new computer (PB/1.25), I wouldn't come back no more. But, I'm still here....

Maybe I should auction off my username....or at least have a survey to see what I should ask for....
