Also, since those maps were done, O2 and Vodafone now do network sharing (i.e. use the same transmitters).

No they don't.

Its not the actual network that we are sharing.

Basically, both us and O2 are currently sharing cell sites rather than network, if we have a mast in an area O2 are able to add a site on that mast to help boost coverage at a cheaper cost than placing a new site in that area and vise versa.

It is a cheaper way to boost network coverage for both networks as to build a new mast can be very costly and timely due to issues with planning permission and cost of building on other peoples land.

Deborah.L on Apple Chat is the person who told me that the prices will be the same as 3GS too.
I don't see why the prices would change really when steve said in the keynote that the prices would be staying the same as the 3Gs and an 8gb 3gs costing same as a 8gb 3g

I just spoke to a rather ill-informed guy at Orange who didn't know the iPhone 4 used micro-sims.

He then said that who are on Orange's monthly iPhone plan wont be able to put their monthly sim in their new Orange PAYG iPhone 4 because it won't work.

I'm assuming he's saying this because the iPhone 4 takes microsims but he hasn't made the connection between what he's been told and why.

There's no reason why my monthly SIM, cut down to size, won't work in a new PAYG Orange iPhone 4 is there?

I honestly don't know how people can get this issue confused.

The prices Steve mentioned at the keynote are for AT&T customers taking a new 2 year commitment.

So the new $99 3GS is on an AT&T contract.

The $199 16GB iPhone 4 is on a new AT&T contract.

The $299 32GB iPhone 4 is on a new AT&T contract.

Steve never mentioned nor hinted at any SIM free prices being the same as the current models, all he said was that the models would slide along, with the 3G 8GB making way for an 8G 3GS, and the 16/32GB 3GS's making way for the 16/32GB iPhone 4.

The $99/$199/$299 prices will remain the same but that's for customers taking a new AT&T two year commitment.

It's easy to use common sense by looking at the model line up and suggest that, aside from VAT changes and exchange rate variations since the 3G/3GS prices were set, that the PAYG prices in the UK will also remain the same.

No I don't think there is any reason it will not work. I asked the same question but for O2 instead of Orange and got told it would be fine.

That's what I thought. Customer service reps, even ill-informed ones, say things with such conviction you begin to doubt yourself...

It keeps that problem limited to 02 though. If we allowed it to happen to every phone then that is millions of phones out there that will be aimed and many UK users will not be able to get an iPhone on any carrier for a little while. Also as I have said before, now that all of our carriers apart from Virgin (who has virgin in anyway? surely it's only for the kids who's parents get a cheap deal on them because they have Virgin TV?) why would you need to unlock your iPhone, surely you just get the one on the carrier you want, unlucky if you are from another country and coming here to get one.

Why do I need to unlock my phone. Simple I want to use more than one carrier. Unfortunately what is good reception in one area is crap in another and vice versa. I have a few PAYG sims for different carriers. If I stay with relatives, Voda is great. Whereas here at home I can only get Three. Thats why I would prefer to have the freedom of choice when I purchase a piece of hardware from Apple and not be dictated to by a network company.

Thats what I thought. But I compared a micro sim to my normal sim and yes if I cut it down the chip will still be within the card size, BUT the micro sim has less 'chip' on it.

IE, the micro sim is about 80% chip coverage where the cut down one will be about 99% coverage. I'm concerned things inside wont line up.

Either way, I'm asking o2 to switch my current sim to a new micro sim.

Went for the O2 recycle option on my 3G. Got an email today to say they've received the phone and their offer will be -5% for "cosmetic wear and tear". Which is fine, its in their T&Cs, but the phone I sent had been in a case and screen protector since I got it, so was in what I'd consider to be immaculate cosmetic condition. They also state in the email that payment can take up to 10 days when they are "busy", so all in all, not overly impressed tbh.

That is a long time to wait for a payment, I tried CPW before and got paid within a week of them getting the phone.

I notice on the UK Apple Store you can only purchase the 3GS handset on PAYG, no option to buy a subsidised contract phone...has this always been the case? if so then realistically there is no chance of being able to pre-order the handset on contract via Apple tomorrow is there?

Well she says you cant pre order and collect it? But isn't that just reserving and collecting? Which we already know you can definitely do.
