It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that they are holding out til the very last minute.

This is the first time more than one network has gotten a new iPhone at the same time. I suspect none of them wants to tip their hand til the very last second.

In fact i would argue that's why some of them won't offer pre-order. Why bother? You tip your hand to your competitors. Anyone on the fence at another network will be tempted to hold until you announce your prices. If you are the sort thats besotted with one particular network well you ain't gonna go somewhere else just because they wouldn't let you pre-order.

I agree with what MikeDTyke said above. I think a lot of the UK networks simply aren't going to bother with pre-order and will go about their business as though a pre-order doesn't actually exist.

After all, I wonder what %age of their customers they expect to gain from an 'early' price announcement prior to the pre-order date. Presumably it is more tactically advantageous to each network to wait for the others to announce pricing?

It's not possible that one network will hold out to the last second. Two reasons:

1. Apple needs to know how much the networks plan to charge for PAYG in advance to set up their websites for the pre-orders.
2. These decisions are taken after broad deliberations before it filters down to the guys that would for instance, update the website. I can imagine those meetings have already taken place across all the networks.

That'd be silly though. When I decide tomorrow which provider to go with, rather than risk getting the phone on launch day, I'd rather pick the provider offering pre-order who actually has released pricing.

In the page source of that vodafone link to the iPhone 4:

" </script> <script type="text/javascript"> tempArray ["0"] = "stg-tshop.vodafone.co.uk";
</script> <script type="text/javascript"> tempArray ["1"] = "t1-tshop.vodafone.co.uk";
</script> <script type="text/javascript"> var opLiveURL = "https://by.essl.optimost.com/es/449/c/5/u/live.js";
var opQaURL = "https://by.essl.optimost.com/es/449/c/5/u/staging.js";"

I'm no expert but it seems like this codes for a temporary link, and then the "opLIVEURL" shows 449, maybe meaning £449 price?

You, me and the rest of the MacRumors community yes. The average "Joe" on the street - probably not.

You would have thought so. I personally would prefer to order direct with Apple and have the PAYG SIM shipped with the order like I did for my wife's iPhone last year. I queued too, outside the O2 store and was fortunate(?) enough to be the first one in the store so had my choice of phone. I know some others were not so lucky. The networks really need to get their act together and announce pricing, pronto else it will just be O2 on the Apple site tomorrow!

why would they have the price in the source code as part of a URL?

are we expecting Orange or Vodafone to allow pre-orders for contract iPhones? it seems all the anticipation is for pre-ordering of PAYG handsets.

That means Temporary Array... which is code. Nothing to do with a temporary link.

According to the Vodafone official twitter channel, they "have not had it confirmed yet as to if we're doing it on PAYG". Although the expectation around the internet appears that they might. Also you can buy a 3Gs from Orange today on PAYG via the Apple website and they haven't announced any pricing yet. And what of Three? They may, too...

so its pretty certain that i can pre-order my contract iPhone from Vodafone 2moro? should i choose to do so.

Just been talking to Katy from Vodahone, she has told me it's not available on PAYG on Voda, bit weird when other networks should be selling it on PAYG.

They're holding off with the prices so that we have no choice when they arrive on the same day as pre orders. We will all be rushed into paying the price they set since were more concerned about stock running out than we are about paying a ridiculous price for a phone.

**** O2.

O2 and Orange offer the 3GS on PAY&GO, but Vodafone doesn't, nothing weird about them not offering the 4 PAY&GO tbh.

Well that's made my mind up, F**K O2, if they think they can 'Tease' me until the iPhone comes out they've got another thing coming. It's not even relevant to the iphone!!! Back up onto your sim, ???huh??? aren't we getting shiny new micro SIM's!!!!!!!!Dumbasses ast least everyone else is saying hang in there rather than here's some S**T info that ain't relevant to wind you up!

Sorry rant over, been refreshing all day for that crap! :mad:

Orange here i come 100%

I would rather have an email everyday or every few days with a little bit of info then nothing at all, i registered interest with all the current networks offering the iPhone 4 and O2 have been the best keeping us in the loop don't forgot some people will have no idea about microsims etc and not everyone is tech savy so they can't send out full blown tech emails.

If you feel an email is enough to send you away from there network then that's your feeling but you registered your interest with them in the first place saying you want to be kept up to do.

If an email stops you from buying from them, then so be it.
