They don't take the money until the iPhone is shipped.

They merely make sure that the funds will be available (either from a credit or debit balance) when they ask for them.

That's just ludicrous ... it guarantee's nothing, you could have the £500 for an iPhone 4 sitting there, pre-order it, then run out and spend £499 on a new TV and just use your next salary to pay for the iPhone since your payday comes before launch.

I don't understand that ... if they're "reserving" the money, surely it'll be taken from your balance and be put into "holding" until the iPhone 4 is shipped?

I'm not buying mine until July 23rd anyway, so by then I'll hopefully be ok to walk into the Apple Store and just buy one.

It's never that simple. A few weeks ago when we got iPads, we went all through this. Credit cards get a pre-authorisation, just to see if your good for it. My debit card (Visa) got deducted there and then and it vanished out of my account. Three days later (It was weekend) it returned. Then a day before I received the iPad it was finally taken for good.

Ok guys, thanks, so let me get this right. I can buy an iPhone 4 from say, O2 in the UK, and ask them to unlock it, and pay an additional £15GBP to unlock it, then get my friend to ship it to me here in Finland, where I will then be fine to use my existing PAYG sim card with it, and it will work fine with itunes etc?

Sorry for the newbie q's, but while we wait, I thought I would double check with you guys.

We don't know if the carrier will allow unlock immediately if they are not already unlocked. With O2 it was 6 months before they allowed you to unlock. But it was also the time O2 lost exclusivity with the iPhone.

A bit dicey, but yes I suppose so. Don't worry if your transaction bounced, I suspect the man wouldn't be knocking at your door with the new iPhone.

EDIT: And you could end up at the back of a very long queue again.

Not quite. If Apple has 'reserved' the funds your card wouldn't work for the new tv (as far as I know, but I'm not a credit card expert).

Anyone else who's woken to find nothing changed quite annoyed? I know its just a phone, if you put it into perspective, but still, seems shoddily run here in the UK.

The gap between pre-order and release isn't as big as it was for the iPad. Things might be slightly different. I remember having an anxious few weeks wishing they would take the damned money.

What about the poor night shift that's been here all night refreshing the page every few minutes all for nothing!

Apple store is down for me...

Good morning, it's been down for an hour and a quarter.

Everything has changed.: The Apple Store is down! When it comes back up again, you should see prices for iPhone 4.
