Did you have to cut through and of the gold foil on the sim?

I am on the O2 Simplicity 20 iPhone Tarif and today reserved a 16GB iPhone 4 at the Apple Store. After several phone calls and email questions to O2 about the micro-SIM card and getting no useful response at all, I decided to bite the bullet and cut my standard sized SIM card down to Micro-SIM size. I used a template I downloaded from the Internet and cut the SIM card with scissors. I had bought a SIM adapter from eBay so was able to keep trying the SIM in the adapter as I cut away at it. I used a nail file to round the bottom edges slightly.

I used some thin parcel tape to secure the cut down SIM in the adapter, just to stop it coming loose inside my iPhone 3gs.

I was actually very surprised that it worked fine when slid into the iPhone! I now feel liberated from the whims of O2 and there is no way they can use the provision of a replacement SIM card to excuse changing my tarif in any way.

i took a slightly less big risk and got two 16 giggers (one to flog). i think i might see if i can nab a 'rare' white iphone if they have any on the day and put that on ebay, reckon it'll go for alot of hardly any are available.

the fact that the online shipping date has now slipped and soon the reservations will be completely sold out all helps bump the price!

i'm not doing this to make loads of money (before people accuse me of taking advantage), but if it can make the overall cost more bearable then that'll be great!

I wouldn't worry! lots of people are doing the same! i am selling one and my current 3GS and like you say it just makes it more bearable!! just wish i could have bought more!!!

Hi there, I have a sim only from vodafone and I was hoping to go along to a store on june 24th and buy a vodafone payg 32gb iPhone, then cut my sim to shape. Is this going to be possible??? Also will they have them in stock in the shops on june 24th??? Thanks a lot.

have u done it before? do you think its best to list it now or wait until you've got the phone and can take pictures of the box?

i know i would never buy something on ebay thats just a 'preorder', maybe other people are different. what is your target price? just trying to work out what to hope for!

I've been practising making micro-sims just in case O2 let me down.

Found some old deactivated sim cards and just trimmed it down with a pair of scissors - very very easy to do. Obviously just down cut down too much and have a nail file ready to make any minor amendments. To those of you worrying about getting a micro-sim - stop worrying. A child could do this...

Hey everyone, I have a quick (and probably stupid) question.

I'm really confused as how to get an iPhone 4 through my contract upgrade. I'm on Orange and am now eligible for upgrade. I want the iPhone 4 but Orange (like most other networks) are telling me they are not taking pre-orders and that I should call back ON the 24th to get one.
Everyone whos pre-ordered off the Apple site for a sim-free phone will get theirs on the 24th. Does this mean all of us who are getting it through an upgrade won't be getting it on launch day? Surely we'll be able to pre-order in the next couple of days so we can get it delivered on launch day? Or would we have to pick it up in store?

Also one final question, can upgrades be done in store or just on the phone?

Reserve at your nearest store, choose 'upgrade' option, you can then upgrade in the Apple store the day you collect.

I have been told by a friend of a friend who works for Apple it is because they wanted to gauge the demand for the new iPhone through the Apple stores and Apple on-line then they will reduce the stock they offer to the operators accordingly and that's why they have gone with the unlocked version straight away!

Interesting. I'm not sure how much control Apple have over the carriers though. Remember, without them, we wouldn't have a phone to use

This isn't possible as Vodafone arent offering the iPhone 4 on PayG

My SIM card had a large SIM on it and once I had cut out the right shape for the micro SIM it looked like I had just cut round the gold SIM on three sides.

The templates are available all over the place - can't remember where I got mine from, just do a search for 'Micro SIM template' and you'll find one.

Yes! I did it with the 3g and 3gs, personally I waited to get it then as you said took pictures of the box unopened and it raised more interest! If I make £100 on it I will be chuffed any more will be a bonus! There is a guy in Italy on eBay and he had sold 3 for £900 +

Can someone help with a quick question please.

I live in London and am due an upgrade on O2. What's the best way of getting an iPhone 4 on upgrade...

pre-order, go to Regent street on launch day, or go to an O2 store early on launch day?

Thanks, any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Julian,

What happens if you go over the 250mb that Dolphin offers? It seems rather restrictive - in a much more restrictive way than even the O2 500mb limit is.

My target monthly spend is <£10 but I'm beginning to doubt that I can manage that on any of the current offers at the moment.
Hi Mike,

That's a good question but I'm afraid it's not one I looked at in detail because I intend to be a quite light data user, only using for manual calendar and contact syncing (only when I open the app), no push email and web use mostly to use google and wikipedia to settle pub arguments. I can't imagine me breaching that limit. A lot of it for me isn't to do with cost, it's because I'm a bit obsessive about battery life. I do a lot of book reading and music on the phone, and a few games, so I prefer not to be burning power on constant data activity - my current phone is locked to the 2G network and I might well do the same with my new iPhone.

Sorry I can't be more help. If you're worried about the cap and want something on launch day then it sounds like cutting down a T-Mobile SIM might be the best bet. A few people here are saying that it's dead easy to cut the SIMs to fit; people have been experimenting with their iPads.

Tesco Mobile reckon they're going to be selling the iPhone 4. They use the poor O2 network but their rates are pretty good over and above O2's offering.

Does anyone have any experience of Tesco Mobile? How do you purchase from them? Does one "queue" up at a Tesco Extra store on June 24th?

The tariffs they currently offer for the 3Gs look good, especially if they can replicate something like this for the iPhone 4:

I think you're right. I wouldn't say my data activity is particularly high - I would have thought I'm about average, 400mb-500mb a month at a guess.

I'm keeping an eye on all operators, but it's looking like Tesco (reselling O2) or T-Mobile for me as these have a cheaper call rate (T-Mobile to T-Mobile is 8p/min, Tesco via O2 is 10p to five favourite numbers). I've missed the first batch of pre-orders, so I'm feeling a little deflated but other than that - if there are any networks watching - let's have some prices, please!

Ok am i the only one here who's actually wondering whether we will be able to use this phone when it gets delivered to us???? If networks are still not coming out with price plans....or any news on micro sims......are we just gonna have a nice shiny brick on the 24th????

Hey i have one reserved at an apple store for a contract upgrade, just wondering does the reservation last the whole day? just wondered how fast im going to have to be ! thanks

Your reservation will be held until the end of the day; it says so in your reservation confirmation email.
