Ok am i the only one here who's actually wondering whether we will be able to use this phone when it gets delivered to us???? If networks are still not coming out with price plans....or any news on micro sims......are we just gonna have a nice shiny brick on the 24th????

I'll answer that with a quote from the Apple Store iPhone purchase page:

"Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple and ready to use.

When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it SIM-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time. Questions? Call our iPhone experts at 0800 048 0408."

I am lay here thinking the same! I have registered with O2 for a micro sim and they said I should recieve it pre launch! Let's hope they are true to their word!!! But I have not heard anything from them since!

o2 Micro Sims...

Hiya,

Been watching this thread all weekend, i'm loving all the drama and anticipation over a bloody phone!

Anyway, here is a heads up for everyone who has pre-ordered successfully, but is still in the dark about getting hold of a microsim! (like me)

Here is a link to request a free o2 microsim. I assume you just need to call o2 when you receive it to get your number transferred etc.

I'm really gutted I missed the pre-order :( Wanted to get my O2 upgrade from the Regent Street store.

Maybe it will come with a blank sim and you just pick a carrier/tariff on iTunes which then subsequently encodes your info into the microsim?...wishful thinking i know but hey

YES BUT...my point is......will anyone actually have micro sims ready by then?????? If not....then what the hell was the point in me forking out £599 on a pre order just so i can get it delivered launch day??? i do actually want to be able to use it!!!

i'm currently on a rolling 30 day sim only deal with orange but i phoned them up asking for a micro sim in preparation for the iphone 4 and they have no idea when that is likely to happen!!

I actually dont care what network i am on now.....i just wanna be able to use it on the 24th but dunno if any network will have micro sims available pre 24th or on that day??!! As i said, if not...what the hells the point in us having one on launch day?

Wait, so they will upgrade my Orange contract for me?? Sorry to sound naive but I thought they were only going to sell SIM-free ones and our networks would be the ones to upgrade us? Why isn't everyone doing this then?

Everyone IS doing this! :D. No rock solid details until operators announce tariffs/handset prices. But they WILL handle upgrades according to the official Apple Store wording. Remember though, this is for reserving/pick up rather than Pre-order.

Are those usable with iPhones though...i hear they are only data sims

Is it possible to check your in-store reservation on the apple website? I ordered 2 x 32Gb iPhone 4's this morning. One SIM free and one PAYG (basically couldn't decide which one to go for, so ordered both).

Got my two e-mail confirmations, but now I can't remember which order was which, as the order e-mails don't appear to say which type of iPhone 4 I've ordered (other than 32Gb black).

The iPhone will come unlocked. That means you will need a SIM card to use it. You probably already have a SIM card in which case - get out a pair of scissors and snip it to the right size.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet about the bumpers.

We all know the cost of a bumper is crazy, but on closer inspection i noticed they have in the description and in the pics Metal button extensions for the volume and hold buttons. Never noticed this before, as i thought it was just rubber.

Will check them out in-store on release i think.

but that's ridiculous and not something i want to resort to....surely a provider will have them available soon.

O2 have said that they will sent out Micro SIMs by then.

Otherwise, you presumably have access to a pair of scissors, your existing SIM card and five minutes?

I agree that it's ridiculous when one pays £500 for a phone, you shouldn't have to be cutting up bits of plastic to make it work with the networks.

Then again, the networks haven't announced pricing or support yet for the iPhone 4 either.

sorry i'm not a professional hacker and dont want to resort to things like that really....especially as it's not guaranteed to work....otherwise why wont the ipad microsims work?

If you take a look a few pages back you'll see several MacRumors members within the last few hours saying things like, "A child can do it", "It's really easy" and so on.

You need a SIM that is connected to your account and the network would be the people to do that.

I wasn't aware you needed to be a professional hacker to use a pair of scissors.

oh excuse me for being a little pessimistic about just cutting up your regular SIM card to make it fit.......no risk whatsoever about buggering up a £599 phone.....we dont all have money to burn! never done it before, never even heard of it being done before......as i said, why wont the ipad microsims work if u can simply just cut up your SIM card and it will definitely work?

No - no risk of buggering up a £599 phone. Risk of buggering up a few pence worth of sim card maybe - if you're a cack-handed chimp. Even so, Mr. Attitude, you don't need to be a 'professional hacker.' As long as you're not a blind quadriplegic you should be okay. See the difference? I happen to agree that cutting up sim cards should be a last resort and I hope that the networks have got their houses in order by the 24th. But if it's a choice between thirty-seconds worth of work, or being sat with a £600 brick in my pocket I personally will choose the former. You, of course, are entitled to make your own decisions.

Now, enough sparring.

To answer your question, I would assume the iPad micro sim wouldn't work since it doesn't have a voice tariff assigned to it does it? Does it even have a telephone number assigned given that it's only used for data?

You'd have to be mentally challenged to 'bugger up your phone' by cutting up your sim

nobody said iPad ones won't work but cutting up your sim saves the hassle of calling O2 up and getting them to transfer your contract over etc, at least with the cut up sim you already have everything on there.

so you think cutting a regular SIM card for another phone will work, even it is a SIM card that isnt an iphone?? it will still work on an iphone? sorry if it sounds daft....i didnt have an attitude, i just generally dont know and am not in any way technically aware these days.

No worries, I know it sounds a little daunting. I've been practising on some old sim cards I had lying around just to make sure I don't cock up my SIM card if and when the time comes.

Cutting down a SIM card from another non-iPhone will almost definitely work. It certainly worked for iPad users. Personally, if it comes down to it I'll be checking the forums to make sure somebody else tries it first but there's no real reason why not. With a couple of very minor differences, a micro-sim is just a regular sim on a smaller piece of plastic. :)

Does anyone mind if I don't talk about cutting up SIM's anymore? ;)

I'm just taking a look at Tesco Mobile, who resell O2. I haven't seen them mentioned at all in this thread (and I've followed it more or less completely since a few dozen pages in).

They are on the O2 network, which while lacklustre - I would stick to if I can get a similar plan to what I'm on at the moment. Now, they currently sell the 3Gs on PAYG with a plan that you top up £10 and get £30 worth of credit to use towards calls (20p) and texts (10p) - just like the other networks - but with the added benefit of half price calls and texts to five favourite numbers. Awesome. They currently list unlimited web & wifi for 12 months but I expect to see an end (or a cap) to that as the Tesco tariffs are based on O2 tariffs and O2's just axed the unlimited 12 months of data for the iPhone 4.

Has anybody purchased a phone from Tesco before? Their small print says each customer can only purchase one - which makes me wanting to purchase two rather difficult, but even so - I think Tesco is going to be one to watch over the next few days.
