God, o2 are useless with this micro sim situation!
I called again and got told they cannot send out micro sims, and do not have any other info atm, but if I go into an O2 store at launch they will give me one apparently. He said you will get one if you go to an Apple shop to buy one, but I explained I ordered it online, and he goes you will have to go instore on launch and get one, I dno :S I dont think they will give me one unless I buy it from them...For some reason I just cant see it being as simple as O2 tell me on the phone, go and get from store, I just know they arent just going to hand over a micro sim...

If you have a O2 micro sim the now, you can port your number from your current sim card to your new micro by using this website.

http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/

Seems the whole system is in place ready to roll!

I got a free O2 microsim intended for use with an iPad (which i never got in the end). If what I've understood is correct, I can have O2 port my phone number and contract details onto this microsim?

Right lovely.

Current O2 customers purchasing directly from Apple:

- If you're 'registered your interest' online then you might receive a micro-sim in the post ahead of time. The reason O2 are non-commital about this is simply a question of logistics. "If we can, we will."

- Closer to the time you can call up iPhone customer services on 0844 875 2302 and request one. They just don't have them to send out at the moment.

- By next Thursday O2 and CPW stores will have them in stock and will be able to just give you one (as long as you're a contracted O2 customer).

- It's also expected that the Apple stores should have them and will give you one regardless of whether or not you buy PAYG or sim-free. The main difference being that the PAYG iPhone is slightly subsidised but you'll need to top it up at the time of purchase.

Yeah and the guy in this video says he got a Micro SIM from O2's site.

Can't watch the video right now, but I've ordered an iPad sim. I don't care what anybody says - until it's activated it's just a piece of plastic and metal. Once I've received it I'm going to use the O2 swapmysim site to switch my contract on to.

Hi

I called Orange to try and get a micro sim, and spoke to a very helpful person (I knew they must have one) who said yes let me just check what I need to do. Then started to read I am guessing an email before asking if he could call me back.

He returned my call within 5 mins and said yes thats fine the micro sim is free and has been ordered. Its sent first class but there is a note on their system to say that it might not be sent until 22nd. He went on to say that when I receive the sim and my iPhone 4, I will need to call back to swap. Included will be a sim adapter.

If it's free there's no harm in trying, I wish you luck!

Do you reckon that the swapmysim trick will only with with O2 iPad sims?

I've got three spare microsims (an Orange, a Three and a Vodafone) for my iPad, and I wonder if I could swap my O2 contract onto one of them?

If not, then I'll break the scissors out...

I got one by filling out the iPad O2 tariff page and they sent me one for free. From what I've read on the O2 site (http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/) it sounds like i can have them port my current sim to the microsim i was intending to use with an ipad

Different types so we have been told, can't use same mSims in either device. See Apple site for iPhone, this has details and it's been posted somewhere on this long thread.

I've got one for my iPad (still waiting for the iPad!) do you think this will work? If so, there's no adaptor to use / test it on my current phone!

You'd like to think if you can upgrade your contract in the Apple Store then they would have micro-sims for the iphone 4

I'm pretty sure that if you are in store and upgrading / getting a new contract you'll get a micro sim, the phone is useless without it!

No, definitely not. The important factor here is the sim-card number, which is why I don't buy this rumour that iPad microsims won't work in the iPhone. The sim cards are exactly the same - it's only the contracts tied to them that are different.

In your case, O2 wouldn't be able to transfer your number from your existing sim card (let's say it has number 000001) to another provider's sim card because they're not in control of that sim.

However, if you order an iPad sim (for free) it's just a plain micro-sim until it has a contract assigned to it. I have a little bit of knowledge about mobile telephony (some would say a dangerous amount) and I'm pretty sure that you could take the iPad micro-sim's number down and ask O2 (by phone or using the SwapMySim website) to switch your contract and number onto it. From past experience with a lost phone+sim card O2 to O2 sim-swaps are pretty much instant. No more than 15 minutes - probably more on Thursday though due to demand.

Starting to not care about getting this sorted asap.

I doubt other providers will do a deal as cheap as o2 simplicity for £15 and I've never been a heavy minutes user.

As long as o2 send me a microsim before launch, I'll sign up to their 500MB a month tariff.

Electronically they're exactly the same. This rumour you've heard appears to be that the contracts that run on an activated iPad sim and an activated iPhone sim are incompatible.

What they're essentially saying is that you can't take your iPad's sim card out and stick it in your iPhone and expect it to work. That's not because the sims are fundamentally different - simply that the sim card in your iPad has a tariff assigned to it doesn't have the ability to make or receive calls and texts.

ok, so I'm on o2 Simplicity 20 at the moment. £20 a month, rolling 30 day contract which gives me:

600 mins
1200 texts
unlimited data

1. Am I going to be able to use that in an iPhone or will o2 make me change tariff to get a micro sim?
2. At the moment, my 1200 texts include 4for1 on texts abroad and 4for1 on MMS. I'm really concerned that any tariff I move to makes me pay for both of these types of messages. I go abroad regularly and use texts to keep in touch as opposed to voice.

Typically I go abroad for about 3 months a year (hols + work). Call it 90 days. On average, I send about 20 messages a day. Depending on which country I'm in, the charges vary but about 20p average.

This gives 90x20x0.20 = a whopping £360 per year extra if I stop being allowed to use my inclusive texts whilst abroad.

any options people can suggest?

cheers
Matt

You can stay with your simplicity contract. O2 will send you a microsim for use in an iPhone 4. You can either buy an iPhone 4 direct from Apple SIM-free or a PayG iPhone from O2. The PayG pricing from O2 is yet to be announced, but I spoke to O2 regarding this earlier (I'm on simplicity and I want to keep unlimited data), and the woman on the phone says that O2 PayG will not be available at launch, but a couple of weeks later, so if you want one at launch, you'll have to buy from Apple direct (all preorders for launch are now sold out but available on July 2)

Since I'm off work until Monday and the same questions appear to be being asked over and over again I'm thinking about knocking up a little FAQ website.

Anybody want to assist with Orange/T-Mobile/Voda/Virgin/Tesco questions?

Thanks Garry. Very helpful.

I guess I'll just wait and see if O2 send me one by next Thursday.
