O2 staff have been told they're unlikely to be allowed IP4's on Staff Plan until "late summer". No reason given, but I'm guessing they're expecting short or limited supplies until then.

I remember speaking with one of the O2 store managers when the 3G came out a couple of years back. He said that he and any of his staff were prohibited from buying the 3G on the day.

Sucks to really want an iPhone and work at an O2 shop on the day of release... Seeing all those happy faces, knowing that you couldn't just pop out and upgrade at a Vodafone or Orange shop!

All joking aside it's pretty piss poor service from all of them. They're offering a product that they want us to spend shedloads on and commit to for up to 2 years, yet no one involved, including Apple, knows their arse from their elbow. It's fun at first but it's getting silly now. This is no kind of customer service and we wouldn't put up with it from anyone else. I certainly wouldn't be allowed to keep people dangling for info at work like this. We've got something happening on Monday and I can't imagine telling people I have no idea of the details.

And yes I know no one is holding a gun to my head but really...

<whinge, grumble>

Well said. The situation is totally ridiculous.

Geez. That'll teach me to go out last night. It's taken me ages to catch up on all the pages that I missed on this thread and I confess I did skip a few pages.

Like a few people here, my thoughts on my reserved iPhone are along the lines of ... "That was all a bit too easy. I know I've got my reservation email but I still don't quite believe that it's going to be at my designated store with my name on it on the 24th".

Has anyone called up their pickup store to try and get reassurance? Do the stores have any sort of list that they can view on Apple's internal systems so that they can go and look and confirm that the store does have your name and is expecting to get and hold your phone for you on 24th? If yes then does that list capture the choice that you made at reservation time, i.e. contract, PAYG or SIM-free?

Getting kind of fed up with the misinformation apparently being given out by staff with mobile operators;

We have Vodafone staff telling one guy that they won't have any stock on launch day because it's all gone to pre-orders- a guy in the Orange store told me yesterday that Apple will have been holding a relatively small amount for pre-orders, and the mobile operators will be getting plenty of stock for the 24th.

Nobody in any network seems to know "anything" about iPhone 4, which is frustrating, as is the fact that they then seem to guess and present it as fact.

Can we please just have some open and coherent policies and pricing from every UK mobile operator for a device that is launching in a weeks time?!!

I couldn't agree more. It's somewhat frustrating to hear the pre-order stories for the Apple Store (and AT&T in the US) and not being able to either pre-order an iPhone 4 with a UK carrier on contract or being given time to make an informed decision on which tariff/carrier to go with.

Am I right in thinking that beacuse I need my phone on contract (not got the £499+ upfront) and I don't live anywhere even remotely close to an apple store, I litterally have NO way to preorder?
It's crazyness. Why aren't the service providers doing preorders online? I have to work on release day so despite the fact I've signed up to countless alerts and LITERALLY check site manually ever hour on top of this for last fees weeks, I will still have zero chance of getting one anywhere close to release date.
Or am I missing something?

i was in the apple store in manchester last night and she said if i've got a confirmation email then i'm guaranteed one on launch day

I'm sure I've seen a bit of speculation in this thread that all the iPhone 4s will remain unlocked, i.e. even if you get the Apple store to activate the phone with an Orange or O2 PAYG SIM then the phone will be set up for the chosen network but it won't actually be locked to that network and would still accept other SIMs.

Am I imagining this or is there any good reason, or reliable source, that might make one believe the above to be the case? In the old days most mobile phones worked this way (Orange was the one exception as the network that did lock its phones).

Just had a conversation with o2:

Tim: Hi there. My name's Tim I am an O2 advisor, may I take your name please?
You: Hi, my name's Chris.
Tim: Hello Chris, How are you today?
You: Yeah, pretty good thanks. yourself?
Tim: Im great thanks.
Tim: Welcome to O2. What brings you here today?
You: Yeah, i'm just thinking about buying the iPhone simplicity 12 month for £15 tariff
Tim: Fantastic.
Tim: Would you like me to send you the link to buy this deal Chris?
You: I'll be wanting to whack the SIM into my iPhone 4 when it arrives... Will I be able to swap the contract over to a microsim to do this?
Tim: Sure, once you have the sim and want to change it just call 202 free form the sim then we can get you a micro sim sent out.
You: That's awesome. That's just what I wanted to know :) Thanks a lot. Now I can't wait til the 24th. Think you could send me a microsim ahead of time?
Tim: Im afraid i can't the only way to acutely get one is to pre register however if you do this you only may get a sim send out.
Tim: Plus it will not have the contract tariff on.
Tim: But if you order that sim then call us once you need the micro sim, this is the best way to get one.

So there you go.

For the Trafford Centre its http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/traffordcentre/
Then the link top right View My Reservations. They are usually timed with a 15-20 min slot. As this is a special occasion they may be bypassing the usual system.

Nothing here either but my thoughts as well, I'm sure they're probably reserved it's just that it's "some time after 8am" rather than a specific time slot so it won't have fit into the constraints of the database that they normally use.

I believe that they will be carrier locked unless you buy the sim-free model. I may be wrong.

Isn't that for Genius appointments etc. rather than product reservations?
I agree. I don't think that lists product reservations, seeing as I've also reserved an iPhone 4 at the Eldon Square store, received my confirmation email, but it isn't listed on the 'My Reservations' page.

This is the reply I got from Apple Support when I asked them about this:

Regardless of where you purchase the iPhone and which carrier you use, it will remain unlocked.

With regard to the price of the iPhone, it is the same regardless of where you purchase it unless your existing carrier has an upgrade special offering a subsidised price.

Just got off phone with Regents Street. I asked about my reservation to collect, and she flatly told me she was unable to confirm it one way or another. She also told me she didn't know how the process on teh day will work, and refused to confirm any phones will be held for anyone that reserved. She also stated she didn't know anything about the white iPhones, or whether or not i'll be able to buy on a monthly contract at a subsidised rate when I turn up. She just said to wait until the 24th and give it a try.

Apple are such a useless, service-retarded, closed, secretive, misinformed, bullcrap organisation.

I'm away on the day of launch but have an iPhone reserved. You think it'll be okay if the Mrs goes in to pay and collect it even though it's reserved in my name?

The Apple Store Glasgow confirmed that if you reserved a iPhone 4 then it will be there awaiting you collecting it on the 24th.

It does say reservations and I've used it before. Normally you book a 'personal shopper' through the genius bar and they can reserve one item for you as part of that appointment. That's how I got my unibody MBP on launch day.

However, as I posted earlier, I don't think it's anything to worry about in this instance. Apple's systems are very rigid (I speak from experience) and in all likelihood the system of "you can turn up at any time and it's still reserved for you" (unprecedented in Apple stores as far as I know) won't have fit in with the existing system/database that is displayed when you use the website. It's not really an appointment as such, so it's not listed. Don't panic :)

I have a number on O2 that I might port over to Vodafone, don't really know what I am doing, but I thought I might just get the pac so that I can cover all my options.

The lady at O2 said "your pac code is valid for 30 days, but it highly unlikely that Vodafone will be able to sell you an iPhone within that time as they have a massive waiting list". She also said " did you not register for updates from O2? People that have will have more chance of getting iPhone 4 than anyone elce!"

I am sorry but I find this funny:)

Alex

They did the same to me!

What a bunch of whiner, seemed that anyone is leaving O2 and they had to beg people to stay.

Where do you go for O2 online support? I got a few questions to ask.

Just phoned up the Regent Street store to see if I could get confirmation on the reservation I've made. Here's the outcome, much of which has already been confirmed.

1) Stores don't yet have access to the allocation system being used for the iPhone 4 release.

2) Those who have received a confirmation email are guaranteed a phone until close of business on the 24th.

3) The store will be closed until midday for anyone who does not have a confirmed iPhone4 reservation. (This is for the Regent Street store, not sure about others)

4) Upgrades and new contracts will be available in store for at least two of the telcos, was unable to tell me which ones.

5) No matter which reservation type you opted for, sim-free / pay-monthly / paygo you will actually be able to choose on the day. Just make sure you bring all the required documentation.

6) Has not heard that white will be available at launch in Apple stores.

Hope that's useful for some of you. As always I take this all with a pinch of salt :)
