Just rung Trafford Centre Apple Store and spoke to Tom (who was very helpful).

I have a reservation for a 32GB (with email to confirm). I chose Pay Monthly at the time.

He checked the system and I'm on there. I also said that because of the faffing the networks are doing that I might want it sim-free now. He basically said they're all the same phone and that option on the reservation is just so they know how to deal with you when you pick up in store. I can chose on the day.

So, in short, this isn't the mess that it seems to be from some reports.

why don't more people talk about Tesco tariffs?

Looking at current tariffs pricing (+£20 expected increase in handset cost upfront).

You can get a £20 per month contract and the cost of the handset upfront will be £427.

For this you get 250 mins, unlimited texts and data, contract length is 12 months.

This brings the total cost to £667 for 1 year on Tesco Mobile with an iPhone 4 32gb phone.

Comparing this to 12 months on o2 simplicity, you get 300mins, unlimited texts and CAPPED data for £15 per month with an upfront handset cost of £570 bringing the total cost to £750

Is there something i'm missing with Tesco mobile? Do they have nasty charges im unaware of or is their internet capped/throttled? I presume it uses the o2 network. Also do you get visual voicemail on tesco mobile? I'm not too bothered if you don't. Please advise.

Pretty sure no visual voice mail, maybe OpenZone wifi, possibly no online activation and in my experience the O2 customer service is OK.

Your call though. It does appear to be cheaper on Tesco but I imagine 3 (with what seems improved customer service - even over the space of the week it took to sort my iPad account) has much better coverage.

Poor Tom this morning, must be getting his ear bent something chronic! I also got to speak to him after a 20 min queue; Apple haven't been told by the Trafford Centre's management as to which entrance(s) will be open next Thursday. He said if it's anything like previous practice then the doors either side of them will be open, namely next to Selfridges and alongside Boots.

Tesco Mobile haven't announced their iPhone 4 plans and pricing.

I've been looking at tescos as well. Though I'm now erring towards vodafone's sim only 12month deals as I can get quidco on them.

The question I didn't ask. Thanks mate.

Edit: Same as iPad launch from what I remember.

And in a bid to save poor Tom's sanity I didn't ask about my reservation, knowing that yourself and others would. I'm guessing that everyone will be getting the same answer if they did ask.

Assuming you're down there for opening time I'll likely see you in the queue :)

Only O2 does visual voicemail, but for everyone else there's an app called hullomail that does exactly the same thing, and it's free. I've yet to try it out (will do when I switch over) but apparently it works really well.

wow just shows how bad Orange don't want customers lol just asked for my PAC to be generated asked me why I said was goin with the new iPhone and their tariffs are not to my liking so she went ahead and did the PAC didn't even bother to try and persuade me to stay or haggle me

If you want people to understand your posts, you need some punctuation somewhere.

I've read this a couple of times.

From what I can tell, Apple have placed 'holds' on two lots of £499 - they're basically checking you have enough money in your account to cover the cost. What you will probably find is that in 2-3 working days, both lots of £499 will show up in your available funds without you doing anything.

When your phone ships the £499 will actually be taken.

Bit of a pain in the arse, but not half as bad as when (at launch) MobileMe customers who weren't supposed to be charged until after the 30-day trial period were charged straight away for not one, but TWO lots of £60.

Got an extra 60-days MobileMe free because of that. :)

Yeah i've called apple this morning and they explained that they just place holds on the card. The problem I had was this 3rd order I made that never showed up in my order list. I was worried that this was the second £499 hold and because there is no reference for it, it would be a struggle to claim back.

So apple reckon that the two active holds are for the two orders I can see and there is no third order, they will only bill me for the orders in their system. The guy is going to remove all the holds and get it to just charge me when the phone ships.

He assured me it wouldn't delay my order and it would still be delivered on the 24th, but I'm a bit unsure as to whether they'll bill me, wait for the transaction to clear then ship.

Just phoned up CS at o2 about an account query non-iphone related, so won't bore you. At the end of the conversation she asked if there was anything she could help me with today.

I asked, is Guru James ok, hes been missing all week. She laughed and said, that the other CS guys took him outside and sorted him out, for making life hell for CS all week long!!!

So at least some at o2 have not lost their sense of humour!

To those afraid to jump ship from o2 on account of their visual voicemail, I recommend you check out 'hullo mail', a free app in the app store. It does visual voicemail a lot better than iOS itself does, haha. I use it insteAd on my 3G now

My Dillemma

I must have been living in dreamland up until yesterday.

I have a contract with T-mobile and have been eager for them to release tariff and phone price details for my upgrade which is due on 21st June.

For anyone reading this who has 50% friends and family discount on T-mobile DO NOT UPGRADE you will lose your discount. So for a free phone I would be looking in the region of £45/month for two years which equals £1080

If you upgrade to say a desire for 18months @ £30/month with this you get 600 minutes unlimited texts and unlimited data (fair use of 3gb).
Soon as you get the phone put it on ebay and get approx £300. Add an extra £200 and you got a sim free from apple (mine is already pre ordered).

so with t-mob in total its £15/month x 18 months = £270 + £200 extra for the iphone = £470

Getting excited now!!!

apart from no visual voicemail i see not much downside of going to a tesco £20 per month 12 month contract.

Pro
Low monthly cost (£20)
Unlimited data (not capped currently)
Handset cost is £143 less than buying an o2 PAYG and putting the simplicity sim in.

Con
350 less minutes than o2 £20 simplicity 12 month contract
No visual voicemail

Personally being more of a texter/data user than a caller i can stomach the less minutes for the significantly lower upfront cost. Visual voicemail is a "nice to have" but realistically isn't worth the extra £143!

well i just phoned up apple in glasgow

confirmed that my name was on the reservation list, and i asked if i would get a microsim and they said yeah i should as i'm going with pay as you go. also i should be guaranteed an iphone and i can come in whenever, but may still need to que.

hope it helps a little :)

Every little does!

I have just had a strange look from others in this Starbucks* where i'm surfing from as I laughed out loud at that.

Superb, made my morning.

Please forgive my ignorance but where are you getting iPhone 4 handset costs for Tesco from? Thanks.
