could anyone elaborate on the removal of the free data? Is it just for payg unlocking, or contracts too?

I have just submitted my request for an unlock of my contract 3g with an eye on moving it on, but I will be upset if I've also inadvertently done myself out of inclusive data.

it only applies to payandgo, you can only unlock your contract phone after your contract is up (AFAIK) and because you are paying for the data then they would never dream of taking it away, as you would then have to pay them less

Lovely stuff - thank you very much indeed, sir :)

Also if the prices are going to go up I may have to move onto a contract and then sell the iphone 4 next year to pay off the remaining term and then enter into a new contract again.

I think it will be £499 for the 16gb and £599 for the 32gb minimum.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks for posting this. I hadn't considered selling/recycling mine as I thought it would only get £50 max (I really am clueless about these things) and not without a lot of hassle via eBay or something, but their rates are really good and it seems really simple. My 3G would have just been sitting in a drawer collecing dust but now I can put it to much better use! Cheers!

I have just done the same thing. Had a 16gb 3G for a while and o2recycle.co.uk offered me £198 for it (down £8 from last week) which was the most out of those phone recycling sites. Expecting to loose 5-10% for general wear and tear on the handset.

I may have got slightly more on ebay, however as it was an already second hand handset, I don't have a box, documentation etc and couldn't be bothered with the hassle. Sent it off this morning so I'm iphone-less for the next 16 days. Thought it was best to get it off before prices plummet!

I am on an o2 simplicity online tariff (Not iphone simplicity, £20 per month, 1200 texts, 600 minutes, unlimited data) and am hoping to get on a contract and pay around £200-250 for the phone. I am quite happy with o2 but if I can't get a similar contract that doesn't break the bank each month then I'll be looking at both orange and vodafone very carefully!

EDIT: You don't have to be an o2 customer or have an o2 iphone to use o2recycle and they are still offering the best prices I have seen online.

I thought you can unlock at any point during the contract but you cannot leave them? Unless I got it totally wrong of course!

I'm not 100% sure I've read that it was only at the end of the contract,

but TBH I have never seen the reason why contract phones are sold sim locked, as wha tis the point of buying a phone on contract signing an 18month contract and then moving to a different network, all the while having to still pay for the first contract, or even if you leave the first contract you still have to pay off the contract in full.

Yes? This is from Wikipedia :)

Jonathan Paul Ive, CBE (born February 1967) is an English designer and the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc. He is internationally renowned as the principal designer of the iMac, aluminum and titanium PowerBook G4, MacBook, unibody MacBook Pro, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Excellent riposte!

Made me laugh like a hyena. :D

I got my iPhone 3G (16GB) at launch, on the £35p/m 18month contract.

When the iPhone 3GS came out, I bought on (32GB) as a pay-as-you-go handset and put my 3G contract SIM in it, and flogged the 3G handset.

When my 18 months were over, in December 2009, I had my contract changed to iPhone Simplicty £20 - for those that don't know it, it's a rolling 1-month contract at £20p/m for exactly the same as the iPhone £35p/m contract but with extra texts (though I can’t remember the number).

For iPhone 4 I'm not sure what to do.

My current idea is to sell my 3GS handset, buy iPhone 4 as a pay-as-you-go handset and then either have O2 transfer my Simplicity 20 contract over to a microsim (will they do this), or to cut up my current SIM to fit (I did this with another SIM for my iPad as no microsims were available here when I got it!).
Unless they do a contract that works out better....

What's everyone else doing? And where are you guys selling, or recycling, your 3GS's?

Yup, I'm expecting pretty much the same.

Apple's recent releases where the US pricing stayed the same has still seen an increase in the UK. Exchange rate is to blame.

Really pleased with the iPhone 4 and look forward to grabbing one asap.

My contract runs out about now or in July which is good timing. I've got a 3G. I'm recycling it with Apple, and taking them up on their upgrade offer whatever that will be. I'll be going for the 16GB model. I'm giving them the 3G asap, before the amount they give out goes down.

It already has gone down...it was £288 earlier this morning for a 32Gb 3GS. It is now £265 for the same phone.

do you think we'll be limited to one iPhone per purchase? does anyone remember if this was the case with the 3G/3GS?

With the 3G, there were 10 of the 16GB model delivered to the Bath O2 store and CPW stores combined on launch day. And then 10 a week later.

Funnily enough at 8AM there were more than 10 people outside! Think you would have had to been very lucky for them to sell you more than one and a bit of a **** to do so when there was everyone queuing from stupid-o'clock. And of-course O2's computers died so no-one got processed until about 11AM. I still stand-by my original comments that the store manager should have come out (heck even at 9am after the store had been open an hour), thanked everyone for their support and turning up at stupid-o'clock, and then told them that the store only had 10 phones, and thus 80% of those who'd been queuing for hours might as-well go home. But no, O2 kept them queuing there. Good old O2 .

I just thought I would add that I have been checking out the CEX site recently and their 3GS trade-in prices have held steady so far -no drop in value since yesterday's announcement. It might be a good option for some people. They will give me £320 cash for my 3GS -can't be bad, considering there is no risk or fees involved like on eBay etc.

I remember Bristol's stores having a ridiculously small number as well. thankfully I was in London at the time...

I guess this shouldn't be the case with online purchases though...

cex have offered me £286 for my nexus which ain't too bad so once I have got the cash then I can decide between an 18th month contract or to get a pay as you go one on orange.

Please advise best route for me:

-This will be my first iP – will get 16Gb version

-Currently on O2 simplicity: £25pm, 30 day plan (600mins, unlimited texts with unlimited internet)

My questions are:

-If I buy the iP via Apple Store and want to use it with the Simplicity tariff (not with PAYG) what do I need to consider – is it a case of just saying to Apple staff that I will activate it later and then just ‘plonk-in’ the sim once I’ve left the store? I have a friend who works at the stores and handles iP’s if that helps ;-). Will I have any ‘unlocking issues’? Ps - I just called O2 who said that they will be selling iP 4’s as ‘upgrades’ to those on 30 day simplicity tariffs like me but they don’t know at what price until 24/6. If I go the Apple route I will either ask them for a sim through the post or if they don’t provide one I will just cut mine down I guess.

-I have a contact who works for Tesco who says she can get 10% off. I know no-one knows when Tesco will be selling it but if I eventually buy from them will it be like buying one from Apple and putting the 02 sim in later or will there be some sort of tariff tie-in/difficult unlocking issues? sorry, I know I’m a bit behind with the way iP’s are sold 

Thanks.
