I thought my contract ran out in July, but the renewal date was actually in May. So I guess they just keeped it going, but I never asked for an upgrade or anything. I presume I won't have to pay any kind of fee for canceling or anything since current O2 customers are apparently getting the same deal as new customers?

Please advise best route for me:

-This will be my first iP – will get 16Gb version

-Currently on O2 simplicity: £25pm, 30 day plan (600mins, unlimited texts with unlimited internet)

My questions are:

-If I buy the iP via Apple Store and want to use it with the Simplicity tariff (not with PAYG) what do I need to consider – is it a case of just saying to Apple staff that I will activate it later and then just ‘plonk-in’ the sim once I’ve left the store? I have a friend who works at the stores and handles iP’s if that helps ;-). Will I have any ‘unlocking issues’? Ps - I just called O2 who said that they will be selling iP 4’s as ‘upgrades’ to those on 30 day simplicity tariffs like me but they don’t know at what price until 24/6. If I go the Apple route I will either ask them for a sim through the post or if they don’t provide one I will just cut mine down I guess.

-I have a contact who works for Tesco who says she can get 10% off. I know no-one knows when Tesco will be selling it but if I eventually buy from them will it be like buying one from Apple and putting the 02 sim in later or will there be some sort of tariff tie-in/difficult unlocking issues? sorry, I know I’m a bit behind with the way iP’s are sold 

Thanks.

Tescos is almost like buying from O2 (except in price). You can unlock after 12 months. You shouldn't need to though as Tesco uses O2's network so has exactly the same coverage as O2 and if you know a member of staff, they can get you a Tesco staff SIM only at the end of the contract which is £11.25/ month for 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB internet.

you're out of contract. the contract is the amount of time you HAVE to stay with o2. you could leave anytime, and as such are entitled to an upgrade deal as if you were a new customer. it obviously means a new 2yr contract though

Yup, I'm expecting pretty much the same.

Apple's recent releases where the US pricing stayed the same has still seen an increase in the UK. Exchange rate is to blame.

Really pleased with the iPhone 4 and look forward to grabbing one asap.

Guys, the 16GB iPhone 4 will almost certainly be £440 + £10 Top Up PAYG o2 SIM (or network equivalent).

US prices same as 3GS = UK prices sames as 3GS (i.e., last years' £440).

iPad was a new product / new US/UK price conversion (which to me was reasonable when you factor in VAT implications).

As this is simply a generation update to the same product line it would be hard for Apple to justify a dramatic change in the US/UK price conversion at this stage, regardless of the dollar/pound change (which is only a year on obviously).

If the prices for the iPhone 4 had gone up we would know by now with the release of the US Non-Committal price - which they didn't, still at $599 for the 16gb base model.

I would be very very surprised if the price for the UK PAYG model was more than £450 all in for the 16GB version.

You say that but the last generation updates for the 13" Macbook Pro saw an £81 hike from £918 to £999.

The MacBook went up in price last time when it was a "generation update" as too did the Pros. The price is almost certainly going up.

This sounds too good to be true - I have a 32GB 3G S on O2, contract runs out next July (2011).

O2 Recycle are offering £265 for it. Now, assuming the new iPhone 4 is around £250-£299 with contract (can't see it being any worse than a direct dollar-to-pound equivalent), and hopefully confirmation of O2's "upgrade early" offer, I can get the new iPhone 4 32GB and the only "catch" or "payment" is starting a new 18 or 24 month contract in June 2010?

Sign me up!

Also can I just add a "beware" for those wanting to jump to Orange to get the better 3G coverage: I did exactly this (am currently using a £25 a month 30-day Orange iPhone SIM for exactly the 3G coverage reason) and while the coverage is great, their "unlimited" data is actually limited to 750MB a month over 3G and that is absolutely nothing if you use iPlayer, AirVideo, TVCatchup, internet radio, etc.

Also their unlimited WiFi access (BT OpenZone/The Cloud) is also limited to 750MB...

At UK Apple stores, does anyone know yet, if you will beable to pre-order on the 15th and collect in store. I don't want it shipped out on the 24th, I want to reserve one at my local store. I am looking at a 16GB PayGo and I would prefer it to be on Orange rather than O2, but I'm not sure if Orange will be an option on launch day.

T-Mobile confirmed to be selling the iPhone 4:

June 8 2010: T-Mobile UK will launch iPhone 4, the thinnest smartphone in the world with the highest resolution display ever built into a phone. Further information on launch timings, pricing and tariff plans will be revealed in due course.

ooooohhh

come on 3 mobile with free skype :D:D:D I will find it very hard to justify moving networks and starting to pay for calls, no matter how good the handset may be

I might leave O2 and go back to them. I'd always found T-mobile to be ok. But then again everyone has one network or another that they like or dislike....

Free Skype calls. I wish. They block Skype calls to UK landlines with the excuse that their call charges are competitive enough.

I'm lucky that I only need to use it skype to skype so I dont even have to have any skype credit :D I've been on 3 mobile almost a year and still have some of my first £10 credit on my phone, which I got free for bringing my number to them :D

I don't know what to do. The best signal I get at home is with T-Mobile. However I would like to have visual voicemail and also I am worried that when Orange and T-Mobile become one that I will end up with the Orange signal which in my house is not great.

What I find a little strange is that Apple are saying that we will be able to pre order from next week. We have never had that in the UK with iPhone and the Apple store before. With all the major networks except 3 offering iPhone should we be expecting it sim free from the apple store and at a much lower cost on contract from the networks?

Yeah they just gave me a £10 for porting my number over from O2. But got them on the iPad and a MIFI as well. I got one of their Skypephones from Argos yesterday as a backup for the iPhone but was gutted when I found I couldn't Skype to UK landlines even though I have Skype credit. Can do it with the iPhone on Three though with the Skype app.

I got my iPhone 3G (16GB) at launch, on the £35p/m 18month contract.

When the iPhone 3GS came out, I bought on (32GB) as a pay-as-you-go handset and put my 3G contract SIM in it, and flogged the 3G handset.

When my 18 months were over, in December 2009, I had my contract changed to iPhone Simplicty £20 - for those that don't know it, it's a rolling 1-month contract at £20p/m for exactly the same as the iPhone £35p/m contract but with extra texts (though I can’t remember the number).

For iPhone 4 I'm not sure what to do.

My current idea is to sell my 3GS handset, buy iPhone 4 as a pay-as-you-go handset and then either have O2 transfer my Simplicity 20 contract over to a microsim (will they do this), or to cut up my current SIM to fit (I did this with another SIM for my iPad as no microsims were available here when I got it!).
Unless they do a contract that works out better....

What's everyone else doing? And where are you guys selling, or recycling, your 3GS's?

I am currently in a similar situation Westyfield - I am hoping to get hold of an iPhone 4 through more or less the same procedure you used to get a 3GS last year.

Assuming O2's mysterious 'special upgrade eligibility' doesn't apply to me, I'm hoping to sell my 32GB iPhone 3GS through O2 recycle (for ~£265), keeping hold of the £35ppm contract sim that it came with. Then, hopefully buy an iPhone 4 on PAYG (for ~£550), stick in my current sim and carry on with my current contract, the only upfront cost being the ~£250 difference between what I get for my 3GS, and the PAYG iPhone 4.

Anyone have any thoughts on this plan (ie. spotted any major flaws)? Anyone intending to follow a similar path? Thanks

Just sold my iphone 3G 8GB to o2recycle for £172, im going to be lost for the next 2 weeks without it. My contract ends on 13th July but you can upgrade 1 Month before your contract expires, so hopefully i'll be able to stay on 18 month contract £45p/m without having to pay much for the iphone 4 handset itself.

Dont even have a spare phone to use, gonna have to nip down to tesco and look for a phone for £10-£20, lol

3 has always seemed like the trendy underdog to me. It would be great to see them offer the iPhone :)

I've been out of contract since last December waiting for the iPhone 4. I've got my PAC code ready to transfer my network but I can't decide which network to sign to :(. If I purchased the phone from an Apple store will I be able to decide the carrier in store?

Do people think that whatever o2 have up there sleeve wud involve trading in old iPhone? Someone has just offered me £400 cash for my perfect condition 32gb 3GS so could do that then either do o2's offer or buy iPhone 4 on pay & go.

Is 400 good offer??

I'm planning on doing the very same. Not sure wether or not to go the O2 recycle route or to try and sell it to Cex or eBay for probably a bit more
