That's the thing none of those tariffs offer you 1400 mins on a monthly basis and it's limited to 500 texts pm. I get 1400 mins, Internet and unlimited texts for £30 pm and that's on a 30 day tariff not 12 months. They took it off their site ages ago.

What's on their site isn't everything they do. I was offered the new Flext 30 when I renewed a month ago.

I'm gonna phone and ask if I can upgrade my handset to the iPhone even though I've got 23 months left on my contract. They should do it for the PAYG price? Otherwise I'll just buy one and use it. If they won't send my a micro SIM (why not?) I'll chop it. :p

P.S. 1400 minutes is loads for me, and with multitasking, I'll probably use Skype most the time. If you really need that many minutes, you should probably just sign an 18/24 month contract.

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I last posted on here but the iPhone 4 has pretty much grabbed my attention.

So anyway, I went into my local o2 store today and asked about upgrading (bought a 3G at launch date and contract ran out in January) and they told me they have no idea what is going on with the new iPhone. I figured they wouldn't know much until the price plans are released.

Basically, on the 15th, would I be able to head into store and pre-order one for pick up on release day? It's probably a stupid question but I've only ever ordered online. Also, could I take my 3G in on release day and use that as part of the phone payment (o2 Recycling)? Or would I have to do that online?

Thanks in advance :)

1400 mins on a monthly contract with a free iPhone on an 18 month contract will be somewhere in the region of £70 pm?

Why pay that when I can just buy it payg and keep paying my £30 for all those minutes anyway. Any which way u look at it you have to fork out a large sum either at the start or over a period of 24 months. I just prefer to suffer the blow at the start rather then over a period of time :)

This £440 upwards price that you lot are quoting... you're talking about PAYG right?

Sorry, cause its all over the place on here... speculation everywhere! LOVE IT!

Am on an 18 month contract with o2. £35 a month with unlimited text boltons. With the 3G 16gb
I have 3 months remaining so hoping i'll fall into their qualification. I dont want to change a thing with my tarrif! So hoping I wont have to pay too much for the phone...
Chances of that happening?

Yes, that's PAG.

Chances of that happening are good, you'll be asked to sign a new contract, either 24 month (most-likely) or 18 months,

Just wondering why anyone chooses to go for the 18/24 month contracts when o2 simplicity plan gives you the same for less. I'm paying £20 pm for 600 mins, 600 texts and unlimited data. This can be compared to the £40 pm 18 month contract deal which gives you the same amount of minutes but unlimited texts as well.

Overall the 18 month contract will cost £869 (inc. the initial £149 for the 3gs handset.
18 months of simplicity will cost you £810 (inc. £449 for the payg handset)
It doesn't make sense to my why people chose the 18/24 contract. Can anyone here who is planning to go on one of these tell me why?

Simply put you have to look at 2 things:
1) Cost over life
2) Length of commitment

For 1), it makes sense to go for 18 months, if you can exit out of the contract quicker, get a SIM only and pay significantly less money. You are also out of a contract faster so you can go with pretty much any provider and get a new phone whenever you like.

For example for two years O2 offer for the 16GB 3GS:
  • On an 18 month contract - £179 upfront + £30 * 18 = £719
    [*]6 months SIM only - £719 + £20 * 6 for a total of £839
  • On a 24 month contract - £249 upfront + £25 * 24 = £849 for the same mins/texts

So in this case, it's better to go for an 18 month contract. We'll really have to wait for iPhone 4 prices to compare. 2) is to look at whether or not you'll want a new phone after 18 months. While this means you'll miss out on getting the iPhone 6 on launch, it means you should in theory be lined up for the iPhone 7 at launch! Now that's a long long way away but shows you're not completely missing out on launch cycles with the 18 month contract.

thanks for that indepth view!

the one thing that will annoy me about an 18 month is that when i upgrade after 18 months i know that in less than 6 months there will be a newer one.

i dont like the hassle of sim, pay as you go, selling etc. stick to the contract then get new upgrade when the iphone 6,8 etc is released :D

plus its probably worth more to upgrade every 2 years as apposed to each year - jumping from 3G to 4 is more significant than 3GS to 4 which wouldnt be as noticeable unless there is some amazing features next year?

when you upgrade the iphone the at the end of the contract is the upgrade not free? so the price difference between the contract and simplicity is made up for as the upgrade is free? or am i mistaken? plus there is a chance of deals being offered being a customer so if you are sticking with that carrier you would save money eventually? plus no need to give so much money upfront immediately. thats my take anyway.

Right, apparently, some O2 reps were talking of 30 month contracts to us business owners today.

WTF.

If the PAYG is around the £450 mark I will just do that as I'm currently in contract until around March next year.

If they allow a contract upgrade with a 18 month contract (anything more and I'm doing the above) and the phone at under £100 like the 3GS on said tariffs I will do that option.

It all depends on what O2 say over the next few days.

I have a feeling the never never card may be coming out for the first time in months.

I don't think people at the end of their contract are offered the upgrade for free, at least not with the iphone. I know service providers do this for many other phones but I don't think it includes the iphone. I haven't been on an 18/24 contract before so I don't know for sure if that's true. I don't think o2 would bother giving existing customers deals as they know they're gonna be selling a lot anyway.

I know. I recieved an email from a rather worried employee who sorts out external communications about this.

She better be wrong, it makes absolutely to sense to lock us into 2 and a half years.

I'm going to be upgrading from my £20 per month O2 Simplicity contract (800 mins, 1600 texts and unlimited data) that was a 12 month contract (conveniently I'm due for an upgrade in the next month) to a £25 per month iPhone tariff (100 mins, unlimited texts and data, usually £30 a month and like 400 texts but it's an upgrade deal) providing they still have the same contracts as they do now. I lose minutes (I mainly text anyway) but I worked out that it'll be £160 cheaper than me buying the iPhone on PAYG as I can sell my 3G too to get back some of the money the iPhone costs. This is all using the current prices of the 3GS of course.

However if the tariffs introduced are more expensive, I'll probably just end up continuing my current contract and buying the phone on PAYG. Will have to wait until the 15th I guess.

30 month sounds unlikely to me, but if it's true, then i'll go PAYG for sure. If PAYG isn't avaliable...pay off contract and jump to another carrier: bye bye O2!

...Let's hope it doesn't come to that though (although I wouldn't mind getting better 3G coverage from another carrier!)

Surely 30 months for O2 would be suicide? I think people would possibly accept an early upgrade if they went from an 18 to 24 month contract but from 18 to 30 wow you would have to be desperate to take that kind of offer up!

Out of interest, can anyone recall what the PAYG price was for the iPhone 3G (if there was one)?

Just so we can perhaps note a correlation between it and the 3GS PAYG price of £440 and then perhaps project the new iPhone 4 price...

8GB: £299.99
16GB: £350

I'm on the £20PM Simplicity SIM only 'contract' too, waiting to see pricing for both contract and PAYG. I've always had my iPhone 2G which cost £269 back in the day although only 8GB storage (Not that I use much of that let alone 32GB!)

Really looking forward to the upgrade as my screen has had weird lines going across it for the past year and it is a little battered plus slow so very slow :D

Because people don't have a spare £500 knocking around? For the sake of £50 its easier to spread the payment out
