For those of you who joined the madness on 3G launch day (which this will be most comparable to, I imagine!) how early did people get there?

I'm in Manchester, and the store I spoke to said that they were opening at 6am, so I was thinking of getting there around 4am in the hope that I'd be out of there in time to get to work (round the corner) for 9am... does that sound realistic?

Incidentally for people asking about when the Arndale centre opens, I walk through it on the way to work, before the shops open, every day. I imagine that the automatic doors are open from about 7 so at least an hour before the Apple store is due to open.

which store was that? I'm planning to go to the TC because it's easier for getting to work afterwards, but I wonder if some of the carrier stores there might open earlier than apple at 8 to try and get some early custom (I would if it was my shop!!)

Apple wouldn't allow that, I doubt any network stores are allowed to open earlier than Apple stores.

Hi all,
Just wanted to add my voice to the questions revolving around the iPhone4 being locked/unlocked. To pass on my findings:
1) Apple store sales staff view: all phones they have are exactly the same in the boxes - ie they are unlocked. He checked with the store manager if buying a contract there and getting it activated would mean the phone then becomes locked to that contract network. There is no official Apple position on this - his gut feeling was that the phone would become locked to the network once the contract/phone was activated.
2) I phone 2302 from my iPhone and spoke to O2 and asked the same question. The woman I spoke to explicitly stated that taking out a contract on an iPhone 4 would NOT lock the phone to o2's network, ie I would be free to swap out the SIM to any network at will
So, I want to believe O2, as this means I can travel with my phone and swap to a local network and avoid roaming charges. I guess however that only time will tell! Just thought I'd pass on my findings.

Think this might help
Quote from the apple stores iPhone Page

Buy your iPhone from Apple SIM-free.

It works with the carrier of your choice.
Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store and choose your own GSM carrier. You can change carriers at any time.

It’s easy to set up.
Get a compatible SIM (iPhone 3GS) or micro-SIM card (iPhone 4) and select a plan from the carrier of your choice. Then insert the card and set up your iPhone using iTunes on your Mac or PC. With a few clicks, you can start making calls.

It works internationally.
Because this iPhone is SIM-free, you can purchase a micro-SIM or SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.

The Apple site just came back up. My order has still not been shipped. I do hope it will be here on the 24th :)

I just hope some network would offer iphone 4 on PAYG with 12 months free internet (hopefully unlimited but seems unlikely...) just like O2's on 3GS. It's a shame that O2 won't do it with iPhone 4 upfront this time. Since I have another contract on Blackberry with plenty mins and txt, all I need iPhone 4 for is data. Any suggestion guys?

No network offers unlimited data now, but you could also go on the 3 sim only plan, you can get 'unlimited Internet' and free 3-3, voicemail, twitter, msn all for a fiver a month on a 30 day a month rolling contract :)
Well giffgaff are still offering unlimited Internet with their monthly bundle "goodybags". With them you can get 100/300/unlimited uk x-net minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data for £10/£15/£35 respectively. No tie in, can change which goodybag you want month-to-month (and can happily use it without goodybag too if you like - though the free data offer for non-goodybag users ends at the end of June).

You'll need to cut down your own microSIM - at least initially anyway, but other than that iPhone works great with them (had my 3GS with them since January). You will also need to get the iPhone 4 SIM free from Apple, but overall could end up cheaper than committing to a high monthly contract. As and when O2 start offering it on PAYG you will be able to use them with giffgaff too (they use the O2 network and O2 locked handsets, including iPhone, work fine).

Think it was the O2 shop (I went to a couple!) but that would contradict their website which says they open at 8:02. The guy seemed pretty convinced it would be a 6am opening and said they'd done that for previous iPhone openings.

Having said that, he also said that given there's few O2 shops in Manchester, they'd likely have stock left after work. I don't think that's going to be the case!

Dno if somebody has posted this, but the Apple Order Status site is working now.
No change at all :(
Wish there was some kind of movement for us in the UK...

Wow, that's really really good to hear, I was scared there was going to be a huge queue and my mother would either not be able to get one, or miss her conference!

I have told her to try and go to the small high street Carphone Warehouse (not the bigger one in Princesshay) first, and if its busy, then try the other one.

I have all the money sorted out, and I really hope there is stock on Thursday in Exeter, whether it is from O2, CPW or P4U. There will be no hope with the Apple store, plus I need to sort out all this stuff with my contract.

The nearest time I can go to Exeter is on Saturday, which would definitely be more convenient, either that or she can get in her Friday lunch break. Thursday preferably. Oh god. I do go on just a bit too much. :S

Carphone warehouse will probably tell your mum that they will reserve an iphone for her the next day, so she will stop looking, go back the next day, and be told that they do not have any stock left, even though she left her name address and telephone number.

Go to anyone else for the iphone, it simply isn't worth the risk with cw.

iPhone 4 on Three

I've ordered my iPhone 4 for delivery from Apple. I have a contract on Three that has unlimited internet and is v.cheap (£5 - 500xmins & 100 txts), I was wanting to put the Three sim into the iPhone and was wondering if it would work?

Three are gonna have the iPhone so i'm guess they'll be no problem with it accepting the sim but at a later date would I be able to wack an o2 im in if i decided to use a simplicity sim?

but I am pretty sure that we're looking at 24th for Delivery at the Earliest, looking at how the iPad's were delivered - I'm not completely sure that we will all get them on the 24th...

PLEASE dont say that....
no were going to have another 10 pages of hypercondriac, over anxious people - shaking like ****ing dogs about them not getting their iPhone on the 24th. Apple will get it sorted, leave them to it.

OMG MY IPHONE ORDER STILL SAYS NOT SHIPPED! WTF IS GOING ON! HELP ME BEFORE I DIEEEEEEE.... </ott>

Ahhh that's better, now I can go for a walk in the park with the birds and the bees. La la la laaaaa

New iPhones from Apple are unlocked you can use whatever sim you like, for unofficial networks you may need to change the Internet data settings as the phone may not choose the correct ones.

Afternoon iPhone fans..

I pre-ordered 2x16GB handsets from Apple for myself and my better half. I'm stumping up £300 + £30 for the handset and she's paying £60 + £30.

Has anyone had confirmation if O2 are allowing upgrades on the buyout scheme yet in Apple stores. I read a few days ago that O2 were blocking it. Is this the case?

If not I'm camping an O2 store at 7 with a large bat. I don't fancy my chances of getting her out of bed earlier!

Just been to Best Buy Merry Hill (Dudley) and was told by two people that the only pre orders they did were on the 15th and that list was sent off to Apple.

Apparently no way to pre order with them now

yepp they are still offering it until the end of june - as in this month which is useless tbh lol. whereas the one with 3 is at all times and 3 has the best 3G network in UK so would be best to go with them tbh :).

I'm just saying that all of the June 24th iPhones will be delivered to the Local Hubs in time. However there are alot of trips to be made by the couriers. It will probably be okay  I just hope I am on UPS because they deliver early morning for me whereas with TNT, I got my iPad at 8.55PM - But Understandably they were busy and managed to get a massive figure delivered in One Day.

It will work. U will need a uSIM. If 3 don't provide, just cut it to size. Done that with my T-Mobile UK SIM and used adaptor to check it still works in standard sized SIM phone.

YOUR IPHONE WILL ARRIVE ON THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

just because it hasnt shipped donee worry!!!!!!!!!!

YOUR IPHONE WILL ARRIVE ON THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

YOUR IPHONE WILL ARRIVE ON THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

YOUR IPHONE WILL ARRIVE ON THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

as long as youve pre-ordered and dont live in the highlands/isle of wight etc etc etc :D :apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

No-one can answer this with any certainty, unless they work for Apple and have inside info on how many 'walk-in' units will be available. It is completely up to you if you want to queue up early....if you haven't got anything on that day (work, college, Uni etc) then why not give it a try?

On the 3G launch I pre-ordered with O2 (about 2mins after the site went live), they then emailed me two days later and said I wouldn't get it on launch day! I therefore cancelled my order and took my chances in my local city centre by getting there at 0430 - and I managed to get one.

If you haven't pre-ordered/reserved then it really is down to luck on the day.

Good luck, I hope you get one.

What were the queues like at 4:30AM?

blegh... unlimited is a lie... 1gb per month is not much but i dont know how multiplayer games on the iphone use data... is there a website which shows how much some games use in mb? or something like that..

are there any contracts at all, any price with a real unlimited internet plan?
Well giffgaff are PAYG only, but they offer monthly pre-pay bundles called goodybags which include unlimited Internet (and it's truly unlimited - no caps, no FUP). Only condition is that it's handset only (I.e. no tethering or dongle use). The goodybags include 100/300/unlimited uk x-net minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data for a month for £10/£15/£35 respectively. No tie-ins - you can start/change/stop goodybags as you like month to month.

Outside goodybags you get 8p calls, 4p texts and free 0800. There is a free data offer for all customers (who don't have the unlimited data from a goodybag) but that ends at end of June, and then the PAYG data goes up to 20p/MB with daily soft cap of 50p (after 30MB it continues at 20p/MB) - but £10+ goodybag users will continue to have their unlimited data anyway.

Worth taking a look anyway - check them out at giffgaff.com - they use the O2 network and O2-locked iPhones work on them just fine, as will SIM free iPhone 4 - you'll just need to cut down your own microSIM. Feel free to use simon69c as a referral if you fancy trying them out - been happily using them on my iPhone 3GS since January! :)

I agreed with your reasoning (if it was you) about shipping from Asia. But im still a firm believer these are coming from Holyhill business park in Cork, just like my iPad did (that came a day before ;) and my Macbook pro did

EDIT: in that case i wouldn't be surprised to see them ship monday evening
