So I can get signal on my 3GS for the time being :) I think a major advantage of swapping and transferring now is avoiding the inevitable delays on Thursday when O2's servers start getting slammed.

I guess I could have just punched out the larger sim for now but with the adapter I didn't see the point...

Possibly the best post of the entire thread, get microsim sorted now = less hassle on Thursday

I hope I am Wrong, Wrong Wrong oh and another Wrong

As you are so sure, could you point me to the O2 link that says this, but all said and done, the new Iphone4 sims will not work in an Ipad, and a cut don standard one will work in both, so i'll stick to a quick cut with the scissors to be certain.

Sorry to have gone off on one at you there dude but it's pretty misleading misinformation that you stated as fact. Okay, there is no O2 statement that specifically clarifies what I'm saying but the bits you quoted are pretty clear - "new and upgrading customers" are not the same as existing customers on existing contracts who are merely getting a new handset and hence need a new design of sim card.

There are many forumites here who have been told that their current contracts will be unaffected by switchibf everything over to a new sim. I asked in the O2 shop as well - "so when i swap number and tariff onto the microsim, nothing changes does it? It's just the same contract but now i have a microsim instead of a full sized sim?" and they confirmed it.

I'm sorry what is this based on. It's bigger than the 3GS but not anywhere near the demand for the original iPhone nor the iPad I don't think.

On the basis it took a month to sell 1m iPad's, 3 days over launch weekend to sell 1m iPhone 3GS and they've taken 600,000 pre-orders in under 24 hours!

I think demand has outstripped supply by some margin ... i reckon they could have easily pre-sold 1m+ iPhone 4's if they could

This is BS.

Just been to my local CPW, Orange & Vodafone stores, all said they are not taking pre-orders, all will be on a first come first serve basis........

Orange are opening at 8am, matey was a right tool and was like, we open at 8am, but the queue will start earlier so bring a blanket..........

CPW & VF are opening normal times at 9am.

Why are others being allowed to pre-order and others not, seriously uncool.

I’m all done, took about 2 mins, hardest part was trying to get the minisim out without inadvertently snapping the microsim out :p

Roll on iPhone Thursday now! :D

My experience of Swapping SIM's ....

Went into O2 Farnborough at 10:30 this morning, asked for an iPhone micro-sim and said that the o2 website said they were available this morning...

The manager said they weren't sure if they were giving them away until launch, i showed o2 site and my apple invoice ... they then rummaged around, produced about 3 different envelope types before they were confident on the right one (which does say iPhone pay monthly/business microsim on it)

I went onto the sim transfer page on O2, did the business (my sim ended 3ff1) and its taken a whole 20 minutes for my old sim to be dead and my new sim to come to life

Overall, much simpler than i suspect the chaos will be when thousands try to switch on thursday...

I just picked up a microsim from the O2 shop in the Friary in Guildford. Did the swap my sim thing on the O2 site and the new sim was active just a few seconds later.

While I was there I asked how many phones they were expecting and apparently they're getting 80 - all black. Hope that helps someone.

nope comes sim free from apple you will have to get your own 1. i do believe however that they will have them instore.

Wrong! iPhones come with a micro sim. Apple have confirmed this. How else are people going to go in store and upgrade? You cannot be expected to turn up with your own sim for them to use...

Micro Sim

Just got a call from the Mrs and my Micro Sim AND adaptor has arrived in the post from o2!

Happy days

You misunderstood him. The phone does come SIM-free. That is, it is not tied to a network (unless you go on a new contract or upgrade, at which point, it will lock into a network during that first activation). Apple will have the SIM cards in store, so if you need one, you will get it.

Could you confirm what is written on the packaging please?

I want to know if I will be able to move my pay-monthly (Simplicity) contract onto that microsim.

So.......... If your upgrading to get a sim before Thursday set it up or just wait till Thursday and apple will sort it out:confused::confused:

The reason I am highlighting this is because I have been unable to get a reply from O2 confirming that the change of Sim is not an upgrade. It's one thing getting someone to say that it's not an upgrade, it's another thing getting in writing.

Is there anyone reading this that has something in writing clearly stating that a sim swap is not considered an upgrade or that it won't effect their existing contract?

Was kinda hoping Apple sim-free iphones pre-ordered online for 24th delivery would have a sim included that could be registered with any UK carrier. Apple have confirmed to me anyway, that no micro sim in box for those who are having sim-free handsets delivered.

Could do without more hilarity from Orange. They are clueless.

I think Pay Monthly, as I now have two payg microsims and can't transfer onto them (you can swap payg sims and contract sims).

@biohead oh the irony - i need a payg microsim and none of the o2 shops near me have even the smallest piece of a clue!

Last year with the 3GS launch my local carphone warehouse opened the evening before the launch. At around 7pm or so to launch the iPhone 3GS. Let's hope they do the same this year! lol...

They make notes on your account when you talk to them. Ask them to specifically note this... that's the closest you'll get to 'in writing'.

It's the same thing as if you lost or damaged your current simcard... they'd just send you a new one. Only difference is that the new one this time is a microsim.

Basically, yes. Most people are getting this sims early to transfer their numbers over to avoid the 24 hours wait on launch date so they can use their iP4 from the off :)

I visited a Vodafone store and a CPW store in Glasgow and was also told, no reserving/pre-ordering as they don't know how many iphones will be delivered and they expect it won't be many.
