So i entered my contract renewal date... which was 28 February 2010...

This is what i got in response:-

"Good news! When we launch iPhone 4 you may be able to upgrade at no additional cost"

So a free iphone 4? £250 approx. from o2 recycle for my 3GS!!! so hopefully it is free then i'll be quids in!

Now this is what keeps me as an O2 customer.

Not exactly. It says 'no additional cost'. You'll still have to pay for the phone; just nothing extra to upgrade early.

whilst it doesnt effect me as my contract ran out in feb and am now rolling, is really isnt special at all!

Plus pretty usless with handset prices.

The key word was "additional". In other words, you'll pay nothing on top of the cost of the iPhone 4.

I know it may be a bit much to ask for, but could someone PM on this site, or DM me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/mikeh1994) when O2 announce the handset prices? I am away from my computer during the day, and don't read through the 5+ pages that usually get posted.

I would greatly appreciate it!

I imagine that the contract prices for iPhone 4 on Vodafone will be similar to when the 3GS first came out.

Does anyone have the prices of how much the iPhone 3GS was on contract on Vodafone when it came out?

Much the same as they are now, to my mind, much better.

Just go on the O2 site and get them to e-mail you with iPhone 4 news. You can also follow O2 on Twitter.

Yes, but i am not upgrading EARLY, i will be upgrading after my due date....

Am i incorrect in saying that in normal circumstances customers get discounted handsets when they have finished their contracts and are eligible for an upgrade?

I would be happy if O2 were to offer at least some sort of discount for customers in my position, otherwise they are doing nothing to enccourage me to stay on as a customer.

Surely its their perogative to keep me on their network?

I've got a year left on my contract. So it would be £240 to pay it off. I can currently sell my 16GB 3GS to o2 recycle for £240, so they cancel each other out exactly.

So basically o2 are saying, give us the phone back, we'll cancel your contract, and we can start again from square one, by signing a new contract and stumping up for a new phone.

Or I can sell my 3GS for £240ish. Buy a PAYG for approx £440ish, thereby meaning a true cost to me of £200ish, but keep my current contract and go onto simplicity in a year (or be eligible for iPhone 5 and a new contract).

The decision will turn entirely on how much the tariffs, subsidised phones and PAYG phones are for iPhone 4. Until we have that info, the upgrade offer is a bit meaningless.

You ARE getting a discounted handset. You will have to pay £87, or some such number, depending on which new contract you choose. This is a significant discount over the PAYG price of around £440.

(I'm using last years prices for arguments sake). You will get exactly the same offer as any new customer, which when it comes to the iPhone is the best you can expect.

You should be able to sell a 3GS on eBay for >£300. I'm doing that with my PAYG 3GS, then I'll have most of the cash for a iPhone 4, unless they make the price something really stupid.

And because you're no upgrading early, you don't have to pay any additional cost. There are no offers for upgrading late (at least, they haven't announced anything).

You're right though; there is nothing to encourage you to stay. Let's hope their rates and handset prices are competitive enough.

I really hope Orange follow suit and offer a good/better early upgrade offer for their current iPhone users.

Considering they only got the iPhone 8 months ago it'd be nice for them to give us a chance to "catch up" considering no Orange iPhone contract will be running out till May 2011 at the earliest.

I'll probably try to sell it privately or eBay, but it has a hairline crack by the dock connector, so I imagine that will affect the resale value. I can't reasonably describe it as mint condition.

Which is the same as a new customer. what anim8or is saying is that there is normally a further discount if u are re signing up to another 12/18/24 month contact. This happens with almost all other phones except the iphone.

If you are selling your iphone to fund an iphone4 I'd look at doing it sooner rather then later. O2 recycle are still offering the best prices (yes I tried mobilevaluer.com).

Iphone 3G 16GB - Last week £205ish, quote I received on monday £198, today £173. I'm so glad I sent mine off yesterday, it'll be a long 15 days without it but I'd rather that then waiting till release and the phone being worth a lot less. I imagine the prices will continue to drop on both 3G and 3GS handsets on both recycling sites and ebay the closer to launch day we get!

No, I dont think it means that at all.

If your iPhone contract ran out in two months time, that would be £40 ON TOP of what its gonna cost to upgrade to the iPhone 4.

Since your contract has expired, you wont have to pay anything on top of the cost. You will still have the cost of the phone on the new contract I think. It's not gonna be free.

Exactly. But this doesn't happen with the iPhone. At least it never has. Maybe the fact that it's now on other networks will make a difference, but there has been virtually no price competition between the networks so far.

I've just had a look at that link for an early upgrade.

I was out of contract on my 3G in January, but then a couple of months ago changed to the simplicity rolling plan at £20 a month.

If I enter the original contract end date of 10 Jan 2010 it tells me I could upgrade for free. If I enter the 10th July (just over a month from now) then it also says it could be free.

Does anyone know if I should be ringing O2 and giving them the required 30 days notice to cancel my simplicity plan now? I can't really afford to buy a PAYG handset and just swap a sim to keep the simplicity tarrif, i'd rather pay a little extra per month.

I just want them to hurry up and release pricing.
