We had a little discussion on the whole 'free upgrade' situation earlier on in the thread. I hope that the fact that there are multiple networks offering the phone now will give them the incentive to offer us free (or at least discounted) upgrades... but i doubt it.

I think I'll ring O2 when the iphone's been out for a few weeks, and hint at them that i'll only stay with o2 if they offer me free upgrade, but might settle if they let me stay with my simplicity 20 contract for 18months...

I'll have a good go at haggling them, and maybe a few of the others too... maybe I'll ring voda and say that o2 are offering me a cheap contract to stay with them but i want to go with voda... can you beat their offer?

Not holding my breath though! A month from now, I bet i'll be down £200 and paying £35 per month again!

I've just had a look at that link for an early upgrade.

I was out of contract on my 3G in January, but then a couple of months ago changed to the simplicity rolling plan at £20 a month.

If I enter the original contract end date of 10 Jan 2010 it tells me I could upgrade for free. If I enter the 10th July (just over a month from now) then it also says it could be free.

Does anyone know if I should be ringing O2 and giving them the required 30 days notice to cancel my simplicity plan now? I can't really afford to buy a PAYG handset and just swap a sim to keep the simplicity tarrif, i'd rather pay a little extra per month.

I just want them to hurry up and release pricing.

Not if you're sticking with O2. When you upgrade, they'll make you sign a new contract then switch you over to it.

If you're going with someone else, then yes, call them up and ask for your PAC code.

O2 have updated their website with information of a early upgrade offer.

http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/earlyupgradeoffer.html

Luckily my contract renewal date is the 17th of June.

So i presume i just have to pay for the handset and take a new 18/24 month contract. No upgrade fee for me.

I will sell my current 16GB 3G through O2 Recycle or a site like envirofone to cover the cost of paying for the new iPhone 4 handset.

So i entered my contract renewal date... which was 28 February 2010...

This is what i got in response:-

"Good news! When we launch iPhone 4 you may be able to upgrade at no additional cost"

So a free iphone 4? £250 approx. from o2 recycle for my 3GS!!! so hopefully it is free then i'll be quids in!

Now this is what keeps me as an O2 customer.

Well done you established what I told you an hour ago :p

Yes, but i am not upgrading EARLY, i will be upgrading after my due date....

Am i incorrect in saying that in normal circumstances customers get discounted handsets when they have finished their contracts and are eligible for an upgrade?

I would be happy if O2 were to offer at least some sort of discount for customers in my position, otherwise they are doing nothing to enccourage me to stay on as a customer.

Surely its their perogative to keep me on their network?

How can you not grasp this, its very simple.

O2 are going to offer you a discounted handset, there has never been or never will be an additional discount because you are exisiting customer this is due to the iPhone being more costly for the networks. (I'm sure I'm repeating myself)

They don't need to make you stay with o2 because no one else will be able to offer you a better deal its as simple as that.

Its not a free upgrade. Its an upgrade with no early cancellation fee.

You will still have to buy the handset and sign up to a monthly contract (18 or 24 months)

..... in terms of Simplicity, I don't know what the rules are with upgrades on that plan... since its not a typical mobile phone contract with a start and an end.

Has anyone phoned up O2 and got any prices for the hansets for 16/32GB yet? On contrat and on PAYG?

That's what I'm waiting to hear!

I rang, and got:

"The prices won't be out until about two weeks before release, and I doubt it'll be out before mid-july so you'll have to sit tight for a bit!"

I know. I wish I could just not think about it and carry on with my life... but nope... i've been on here refreshing all day like an idiot.

I'm guessing since it's 17:40... all the O2 people have gone home to their wives and kids and we'll have to wait until tomorrow.

I would guess anyone on a sim only contract would be treated as a brand new customer and not as an upgrade?

I am on iphone simplicity and rang up o2 this morning and they said I should treat it as an upgrade to the iphone 4 and can keep my same number etc.....

still no one have any idea if o2 will offer pre orders and how that works for standard upgrades ? Apple set that date but is that not just for there PAYG Online phones ? as they dont sell contract models.

Just phoned them up and they are clueless about the update. I guess it was only released by 02 over the past few minutes so it will take a few hours to get this info across call centres.

They did say that keep checking the 02 webby and I guess thats our best source of info... or Twitter in this case.

I'm happy - can upgrade to the new one since my contract runs out on the 26th :D

my contract expires on august 22nd. So according to that I have to pay £20 and that gets me out of the remaining 2 months of my contract ready to get a iPhone 4. I think thats pretty damn good really.

Wouldn't it be better to just save the £20 and wait an extra few weeks? I really could do with £20 right now!

Is it safe to assume that if I sell my 3GS and buy an iPhone4 from Apple, that o2 will give me a microsim and transfer my number to it to continue my contract without any hassle?

Sign up for a new 18 or 24 month minimum term Pay Monthly or 24 month Business airtime contract with O2 with an iPhone at the normal price for that phone...

Does that mean you have to pay the Early Upgrade Cost and pay for the handset, or just the Early Upgrade Cost and the cost of the new contract?

Either that's really ambiguous or I'm really tired. :D

Has Anybody Called Up Apple And Asked Them About PAYG Availability On Launch Day?

No but one of the options that O2 list on their website for contract customers that want to upgrade is to buy a payg handset and use it with your contract sim. So does that not sort of suggest that it will be the same as last year and payg handsets will be on sale on day one?
