Anybody here going with 3? (Not seen much in the thread about 3) I was with them years ago when they first started out as 3 (and they were indeed terrible back then). But now they seem to have the best coverage (3G wise) and Orange as their 2G fall back (as they don't have a licence from what I understand).

Seeing Ofcom coverage maps a year old and such it does state that the coverage area shouldn't be confused with signal strength and quality; so obviously I'm taking a gamble here going to 3.

Could someone confirm:

- Are Three any good for 3G coverage (reliable - in general)?
- How does the 2G fall-back work? Is it reliable, do they get good coverage? (I'm thinking maybe Tesco customers might have good ideas on what their service is like on o2's airwaves; is there a significant difference?)
- Would Orange be the better choice, or not? (I've heard their CS is terrible; and 3's is bad too apparently but they seemed very helpful to me with my enquiries)

I have looked at the other operators but iPhone contracts in general don't all seem that promising - o2 is a definite no-no for me now, so its between Voda/Orange/Three. Would think about Tesco if they had visual voicemail (can't imagine not having it now). As things are I've got an order (yet to be shipped) due in a couple of weeks and planning on Three's £25 a month 12-month SIM-only plan, which looks good and fairly decent Tethering options should I eventually need them.

Decisions, decisions! I just hope I'm making the right one. Last thing I want is a phone that won't call people. Am I overreacting?

I know some people report problems with 3 Customer Services, but I had a contract with them for 2 years and have had a broadband package with them and have always found them courteous and helpful.

I'm hard of hearing, so for me, good customer services = clear spoken English. I've had a nightmare with some call centers with their standards of spoken English being so poor. 3 seemed good though, and they are great in store apparently.

Thanks glanv - will check that out.

It is a pickle! I was in the New Forest couple of years ago on holiday and O2's phone reception was non-existent. Can't imagine it changing much since then. Portsmouth not being too far away can't say I blame you for wanting to change.

We customers are being ripped off by O2 as it is anyway with their data plans - to get any sort of mileage with Orange it's a 24 month contract, Vodafone are okay on 18 month but you need to be in 90 days of expiry for a renewal. Not sure on Orange's policy - O2 priority list is okay but again, bad data plans put me off at least.

Think you're making the right choice in buying the handset outright. Selling/recycling 3GS should bring in a bit, tbf.

I'll check that map out a little later on, desperate for the new iPhone though - little grating those ordering online have to wait longer when one could troll an Apple store daily to get hands on one....

No worries LWX.

Did you enjoy the New Forest? It is a wonderful place!

Yeah, hoping to get a fair price for my current iPhone, although it is only a 3G!

I thought about heading to the Westquay (Southampton) Apple Store today to try my luck. But, with the reception/yellow screen issues (which could be just a small % but seems prominent because it is only those with issues that post) I am going to do the sensible thing & wait. I pre-ordered from Apple on 20th as a contingency in case there is a shortage all the way through July. At present it ships on the 14th so if I decide to wait longer I will just cancel the order.

In my experience 3 are great in store, the problem is that there's only so much they can do in store, for most things even they have to ring the call centre just like anybody else.

Their 3G network is also great, but on the iPhone they don't seem to be able to roam onto 2G for EDGE/GPRS data, it's only for voice and SMS. So if you run out of 3G coverage you won't get any data, even at a snail's pace.

(That's my experience using a normal PAYG SIM in the iPhone, maybe their actual iPhone plans still allow 2G data but I haven't seen any evidence of that.)

Has anyone who is an existing O2 customer and eligible for an iPhone upgrade (like me) been in touch with them and asked if they cant match or better Tesco Mobile tariffs?

I'm on the iPhone SIMplicity 20 monthly rolling contract and pay £20 pcm. I don't want to spend any more per month (or spend £600 on a new phone) and Tesco are the only carriers who offer the iPhone 4 @ £20 pcm. Since Tesco use the O2 network, surely O2 can match their tariffs? I don't mind being in a contract for 12 months or even 18, I just can't justify spending £30 or more a month.

That wasn't my experience, on Pay Monthly you can certainly get data on the 2G network (slower of course).

It should be noted that 3 generally has a terrible reputation for CS... http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?t=91190

Absolute. legend! :D

On the subject of customer service, all I'm bothered about is:
a) I can understand what they are saying
b) They have decent opening hours for Customer Services (Voda had 24/7 CS when I was with them pre-iPhone; o2's CS hours are not brilliant if you're busy)

The thing with CS is, especially looking at the case on 3G, is the guy ringing up, giving them an option, "this or that" - it let the CS guy play the idiot and his sales tactics which so often leads to a 'nightmare'.

I had a similar difficult conversation with Vodafone back when I wanted to switch to o2 for iPhone (before V had it). I was persistent, and went about it the right way, and won in the end.

It's not always easy, but CS' reputation or sales tactics are not the things I think of as most important when it comes to CS. I've only ever needed to speak to CS when its come to upgrading/terminating usually so its a non-issue (for me).

Beautiful place, there's a lovely pub on the river in Fording Bridge, beer wasn't too bad. :)

This change just happened in the last week; are you still with 3 and have you tried it lately? I think there is a new 3 Carrier File that may have caused the change.

No I have left 3. Have you checked with them, it could be that the phone thinks it is roaming when on the Orange network (just a guess), and if data roaming is switched off it may refuse a data signal.

Yeah I'll check with them. I thought the roaming thing might be the issue but turning Data Roaming on didn't fix it. I heard that it was announced that 2G data roaming was over, but haven't seen the actual announcement anywhere, so.

eek. would charges be incurred then? =/

I got my iphone from Tesco yesterday afternoon, I placed my order at about 7:55am on Friday, so it must just got processed before the systems went down. Loving it so far :p

Did a quick Google search and believe access to 2G data maybe tied into whether you have purchased an Internet add-on or not. If you are using the free allowance you get for topping up then you are probably not allowed to use 2G.

So, what do you guys recommend for Insurance? The O2 insurance seems well high at £15pm with a £100 excess for a claim.

Please suggest Insurance only items I am not interested in opening a bank account to get Insurance.

Not gonna happen. Sign up with Tesco if you want their deal.

Getting my phone tomorrow, can't wait.

Current iPhone simplicity customer, called o2 repeatedly on launch day (damn cust service kept cutting me off! :(), and was told I couldn't order one because I don't spend £50 a month. Rang up on Friday morning first thing & got told I could order one, so did so... Really really excited now! Ordered a Zagg IS with 50% off too, as I entered their iPad competition :)

O2 can't get enough iPhones to satisfy the demand from their customers who are willing to pay the going price so I doubt you'll manage to negotiate a discount, especially as you are not a big spender with your £20 tariff.

Do you have home insurance? If so, a few insurers let you increase cover for phones & gadgets. If not, google for gadget insurance. Personally, I would self-insure by putting a tenner in a bank each month and also being careful not to leave your phone anywhere or drop it etc... I've had my 3G for two years and it is in perfect condition. I use a Sena Slim case which is surprisingly protective, I'm also very careful with the phone.

HTH :)

Done well ordering one over the phone - I suppose it depends on who you speak to. I expect O2 staff have discretion to do phone orders, probably meant for premium customers. I am going to request my pac from O2 as I will probably change to Vodafone - I wonder if they will offer to upgrade me? Doubt it!
