White iPhone 4

Hi,
just saw the Sky news video of the Regent Street Apple Store, and look, there are white iPhones featured in the video twice:

http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2010/06/26/white-iphone-4s-caught-on-tv-in-london-of-all-places/

The video is on that page, and it is at 1:23 and 1:31 in the video that white iPhone 4's are shown being used.

Can anyone who has been into the Regent Street store confirm how they have white iPhones, and whether they were for sale?

Has anyone tried calling UK customer service to try and score a free bumper?

Yup got passed to a Greek dude first who was nice but was unauthorised to give me one even if he wanted to. Then to an arrogant american lady who kept spouting the jobs line at me. "you have to hold it differently sir...its a non-issue...we only hand out bumper cases on a case by case basis but i can certainly order one for you its £25"

That said YMMV

I'm certainly gonna be returning my s/o's phone because she wants to be done with the whole fiasco and get her money back after that phone call. But i'm still testing mine exhaustively before making the final decision. My phone doesn't really exhibit the issue unless its in the death grip, simply touching the lower left does nothing, i have to cup it to get the effect and even then it never says No Signal or drops a call but i'm assuming thats because i'm in a strong reception area.

Not a dude called Paul then a lady called Jeanette?

I'm on the "priority" list too, after not being able to get one on launch day at Bullring. Queued for an hour or so before they ran out of walk-in stock. Waiting for that e-mail now.

Although, what I don't get is that I've been hearing that people have managed to get hold of the iPhones after supposedly new stock coming into Bullring. When I called the store (yesterday and today) they did tell me that they don't have any stock in store...

50% of new stock goes to those on the priority list, the rest is going to stock the shelves. At least that is what they are doing at regent st

Are you in a 3G Area? Can an O2 phone (Any really) connect to 3G?

I was with O2 before, and it worked.
I cant go online, sends MMS, check email or anything. No 3G, Edge, or the Circle sign internet at all.

I was with O2 since the first day of the original iPhone, and it worked fine. It's a bit strange that ALL 3 handsets we bought have this problem.

A bit of a query?

Ok - I have a 3GS iPhone which has always been on O2 and a bit rubbish to be honest. I was going to switch to orange but then tesco announced their prices and I was going to go with them even tHough they're O2 rebranded.

I have an iPad which is on orange so I did some speed tests on my 3GS and iPad. The iPad (orange) was three times as fast on 3G - I did about 10 tests!

So my query is this .... Is the better speed all down to the orange signal or is it down to the fact that the iPad is newer technology and using the 3G reception more efficiently?

I'm finding it hard to justify £30 a month for 18 months when I know the tesco £20 a month for 12 months package would suffice. But I want a good 3G experience!!

Arghhhh !!!!

Thanks for replies

I'm finding my iPhone 4 so much quicker 3G wise, than my iPhone 3GS.

Any other Orange iP4 users getting good speeds

I'm getting great speeds on Orange! I can't really fault the phone at the moment (I'm right handed :p) except for the fact i have a few faint yellow splodges on my screen... I hear they disappear with a few days use. If they don't, I'll be getting it replaced.

Quick question - Because I got my iP4 through Orange, would I have to get a new unit from them or could I take it into an Apple Store and get it replaced there?

Have you checked your Cellular Data Network settings are correct for your carrier? This could be the problem.

I had the same problem: simple to sort out: plug it into itunes and click check for update, it will update your carrier settings to the tesco settings

how did u manage to get phone from tesco
i cant even get through

I phoned them the day before release to find out if the one near work would have any in stock, which they confirmed yes, 17 in 16gb, 6 in 32gb.
Showed up at 630am (mobile section to open at 9), and was second in line. By 9 o clock, only 10 people were in line. My dad who came later (but still 5th in line) said the local O2/CPW shops had 100 plus people outside them, who could have easily strolled into an air-conditioned Tesco lol.
This was in South London.

I wouldn't have thought that hardware would make a difference, but then this post on the front page of macrumors about the improved speeds on the iPhone 4 compared to the 3GS would appear to suggest that it does.

I guess you should also take a look at the coverage maps for both networks for your area (google around and see if you can find an independent map as the ones on their websites tend to lie). Personally, I get better Orange signal in my area than I do O2, but that Tesco deal, despite all their screwing around, is just too good compared to what Orange can offer.

Anybody here going with 3? (Not seen much in the thread about 3) I was with them years ago when they first started out as 3 (and they were indeed terrible back then). But now they seem to have the best coverage (3G wise) and Orange as their 2G fall back (as they don't have a licence from what I understand).

Seeing Ofcom coverage maps a year old and such it does state that the coverage area shouldn't be confused with signal strength and quality; so obviously I'm taking a gamble here going to 3.

Could someone confirm:

- Are Three any good for 3G coverage (reliable - in general)?
- How does the 2G fall-back work? Is it reliable, do they get good coverage? (I'm thinking maybe Tesco customers might have good ideas on what their service is like on o2's airwaves; is there a significant difference?)
- Would Orange be the better choice, or not? (I've heard their CS is terrible; and 3's is bad too apparently but they seemed very helpful to me with my enquiries)

I have looked at the other operators but iPhone contracts in general don't all seem that promising - o2 is a definite no-no for me now, so its between Voda/Orange/Three. Would think about Tesco if they had visual voicemail (can't imagine not having it now). As things are I've got an order (yet to be shipped) due in a couple of weeks and planning on Three's £25 a month 12-month SIM-only plan, which looks good and fairly decent Tethering options should I eventually need them.

Decisions, decisions! I just hope I'm making the right one. Last thing I want is a phone that won't call people. Am I overreacting?

It is difficult to say/decide which is the best network for coverage in your area. I myself and trying to work out if I am better off with a carrier other than O2, the 3G speeds I get with them are awful in Portsmouth!

Have you checked Ofcom's website? They have a map that shows where masts are located. Not an indicator of good signal in itself but you could overlay that info with the coverage maps and try and come to a conclusion. There are two Vodafone masts near me and I am currently thinking they might be the best for me.

Link for Ofcom site is:

http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/padservlets/SiteFinderServlet

Put in your location, give it a while as it is slow, then the mast will come up as little triangles. Double click these triangles to see mast info.

Re visual voicemail, I might be wrong but I think it is only O2 that currently offer this. However, there is an app that apparently does the job just fine ("hullo" something).

I am going to buy a sim-free iPhone 4 in a few weeks when the signal issue and yellow screen issue have died down and test it with a few different sims to see which is best for me. I'm not sure how easy it is going to be to get a sim from each carrier without signing up for a contract mind?!

I went with three for my iPad contract. superb. I was on a long journey from Scotland to Cambridge last weekend and was streaming iplayer radio over it, not a drop out all the way. iPhone 3G on O2 currently, but i'm definitely moving to three on the ip4. £15/m 30day rolling.

Thanks glanv

Thanks glanv - will check that out.

It is a pickle! I was in the New Forest couple of years ago on holiday and O2's phone reception was non-existent. Can't imagine it changing much since then. Portsmouth not being too far away can't say I blame you for wanting to change.

We customers are being ripped off by O2 as it is anyway with their data plans - to get any sort of mileage with Orange it's a 24 month contract, Vodafone are okay on 18 month but you need to be in 90 days of expiry for a renewal. Not sure on Orange's policy - O2 priority list is okay but again, bad data plans put me off at least.

Think you're making the right choice in buying the handset outright. Selling/recycling 3GS should bring in a bit, tbf.

I'll check that map out a little later on, desperate for the new iPhone though - little grating those ordering online have to wait longer when one could troll an Apple store daily to get hands on one....

I was probably no.10 in line of the people who didn't managed to get an iPhone on day one, and so should be one of the firsts on the priority list. The Apple rep even made a speech on how I would be the first one to get it when stock comes in, and that getting on the priority list would be the best way to get one soon.

Has anyone here on the priority list gotten that email already? Just curious.
