A word of warning

I would think quite a few people will be in the same position I am in. Bought a 3GS on launch day last year (June 17th) on PAYG because O2 wouldn't do a reasonable deal to terminate the contract early. So like me many will have put the PAYG sim away in a drawer with it's free one years internet access, slowly ticking away, and replacing it with your still running contract sim. Then at the end of the contract popped your PAYG sim back in and enjoyed whats left of the year with the free internet you paid for by forking out a large amount for a PAYG iPhone. If your like me your now probably at the point of thinking about the new iPhone or even going for someone other than O2 as your free internet will end this month. Well O2 charge you £15 to unlock you iPhone, which isn't too bad. Apparently thats what Apple charge O2 for the magic code. Now for the interesting bit. When you fill out the online form to unlock you iPhone they tell you

a) It will cost you £15 and this will be taken from credit on your phone

b) It will take around 14 days to accomplish. You will receive a text telling you when it's been done.

c) Any remaining time left on your years free Web Internet bolt on is terminated.

Fair enough. I set the wheels into motion Monday by filling out the form online and topping my £4.74 up with another £15 to cover the cost of the unlock. Didn't think anymore about it until last night. My phone suddenly went crazy with messages telling me to top up as my balance was zero!!!
Apparently what happens is O2 actions the disconnect of your free internet bolt on straight away, grabs it's £15 and keeps quiet. It then proceeds to use up your remaining credit at the alarming rate of £3 per MB. Yes shocking. So they take the internet bolt on off you even though they have not provided the service that warrants that yet. Keep quiet about it and empty your reserve.

I called O2 this morning and they were very helpful. I was lucky to get a knowledgeable person first go. He refunded me the £4.74 and agreed it was a bad system. But for anyone taking this route, beware. Set your APN in settings to something other than O2 to stop internet via the phone and only via WIFI, before you apply for you phone to be unlocked.

Right, time for a bit of pricing speculation. Possibly near the £500 mark for the 16GB / low end.

In a chat with O2 today (see post above), The topic of availability came up. He seemed fairly certain that the new iPhone will initially only appear on contract with PAYG following a few months later. I did remind him of the 3GS in which both launched simultaneously. I hope he is wrong because I will not have another contract for anything.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I hope this isn't true.

Ok, so I'm going to buy the new iPhone on release, but having never brought one before, I have a few questions.

Which options do I have for release? Reserve for pick-up in Orange/Apple Stores or Pre-order online for delivery on release?

If I pre-order it, and it gets sent to my house, how do I add it to Orange, and choose the contract?

Thanks!

I don't think anyone knows this kind of detail yet as Apple have not launched it yet. It is believed that they will announce the launch next Tuesday at the WWDC. It may be available immediately afterwards or weeks or even months later. No one knows yet. Last year at the release of the 3GS model they were taking pre-orders that could be collected in store. I am not sure about pre-order to home, someone else may answer that one. They also released the PAYG version on the same day. At that time it was only available on O2 and was sold by Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse. More providers will probably be involved this time.

Yeah, sorry. I was asking about the 3GS situation, and sorry I wasn't clear in my post.

just to say to people again, you could always try your local computer exchange (if you have one in your town centre)

i know they dont seem the best of shops, but give you cash in your hand after testing the phone and its more than the post away companies, without the risk of losing it in the post or damaging it!

just a thought anyway guys, ive used them loads in the past....

also o2 better have it on payg!!!!!

I am another of the people who bought a 3GS around release. Got 7 months left on my 18 month contract with O2.

From what I understand, when the iPhone 4 comes out, I can pay off the remainder of my contract, and sign a new one with the iPhone 4. Or I can buy the new iPhone on PAYG, and put my current contract SIM in it...am I wrong?

Either way though, I have to stay with O2? I'm seriously considering Orange or Three due to their better network and 3G coverage.

Curious to learn what others in a similar situation will be doing.

I don't see why you have to stay with O2. Either way I think O2 will expect you to continue or pay off your contract. Thats if its like last year. In other words you new phone is a totally separate thing in their eyes. No discount etc.

identical situation to you...£35 a month
I unlocked my phone on O2 (free), paid off the rest of my contract (7 x 35 = £245) and sold my 32GB 3GS iPhone to CeX for around £307.

I'm starting a new contract as it seems to be:
  1. the easiest option
  2. the option most likely to get me a new iPhone on launch day :D
the £55 odd extra will of course go towards a new phone/contract
don't trust O2 with upgrade promises or PAYG availability...contracts have worked fine for me so far

plus this leaves you with the option of switching to orange or 3. I thought about this too but I've heard a lot of bad things about 3 and i'm not entirely comfortable with an unlimited-but-not-really data plan and no visual voicemail

What if contracts this year are a minimum of two years, which has been hinted at a lot lately. In 12 months another iPhone will be launched and your locked for another 12 months.

No sale. I'm not signing away more than 18 months. In fact, if I could, I'd get a 12 month contract.

hope with orange your not going after one of their iPhone contracts to get an iPhone, if you require unlim txts you either have to pay £7.50 extra a month for unlim txts on 18 month contract or sign up for a 24 month contract an fork out 45 a month.

probably best getting a payg o2 iPhone an get it unlocked and take your pick of networks, I personally have to go in for a contract and moving off orange to O2 as they have the better value tariffs.

I'm tempted to buy the new phone on O2 PAYG and do this:

iPhone 4G (~£500)
Unlock Fee (£15)
T-mobile Sim Only 10 (£180)

Total = £695 for 18 months with no commitment.

...compared with the lowest O2 tariff with comparable features (both have 100 minutes, unlimited internet)...

iPhone 4G (~200)
Minimum Term of £30 x18 months (£540)

Total = £740 with 18 month commitment.

It makes no sense...

This is what I want to do, however I am a bit worried that they might not offer a payg handset at launch. Or more importantly that they might not unlock iPhone 4's at least at the start.

If O2 offer unlocking for payg iPhone 4 from launch then they are going to sell a lot of handsets that will just go to another network. I can't see O2 wanting to do this.
