Wait till your in a dark room tonight turn the lights off and put a black image on the screen then see if you still think the screen is fine. I thought mine was bleed free until I stood in a cupboard in complete darkness. I am also going to wait a few days to see how much it bothers me but with apple there should be no problem swaping it out next month or even in 6 month for a bleed free brown box model. I'm guessing they know about the problem and will fix it in time.

Forgive me, but standing in the cupboard looking at a solid black image in the pitch dark is not a normal use case scenario.

It's like testing the volume by turning it to one bar and standing underneath a running jet engine with your fingers in your ears to see if you can hear your MP3 of crickets chirping.

Put your screen to 50 or 100% brightness, launch the camera app, place your iPad on a table and close the curtains.

My Tesco order arrived at the store perfect. Have to say 'A+' for Tesco Direct! A 'U' for Apple Store Online.

Will check the light leakage later. Just having a sync and play first.

Ah, yes, I see that that is much more normal usage behaviour. :/

Seriously, guys, I think the backlight bleeding thing is just people torturing themselves over something that is rarely apparent in normal conditions. I'm sure I'd see something. I'm not saying it's impossible that there could be a really bad unit. But if you have to test to these extremes to produce a noticeable effect, there's not a serious problem.

Don't worry you'll watch a video/movie soon in a dimly lit room and will either notice or not.

Trust me there are issues. I sit my ipad 1&2 right next to each other, same brightness settings (50%), same film and it's there as clear as day, even in a dark room in the daytime. There is a stark difference between the two actually.

No standing in a cupboard is not normal use but I was simulating using it at night in bed with the lights on in pitch black. Is that nor narmal use? I am sure plenty of people will be using the ipad to watch movies at night in bed with the lights out. The fact that I used a black image is just to show if there is a problem or not although I could also see it when I loaded a youtube video up just not as bad. It isnt the end of the world but there is an issue why should I pay £400+ for a device that has a problem like this? Would you go and buy a HD TV for £400+ that had a ghosting image but only when you use the scart? Can you see the point I am trying to make here?

Well yes, I can turn the lights off in my windowless hall, turn the iPad brightness up full, look at a blank screen, and peer at the edges, and yes, I can detect light bleed. But I never do this, and in a year of use it's never been a distraction. Okay, never mind. Sorry to derail the thread.

Back on track, Tesco very efficiently got my bargain-priced leather Smart Cover to me today. I also got my Sim-Cutter-Downer from Amazon. Shame I couldn't get my hands on an actual iPad 2...

Typing on my lovely new iPad.... Skipped the first gen so really happy with this one. Hats off to Tescos

The hidden multitouch gestures are quite cool/nifty.

Edit: I've now arrived at the same dilemma as the OP. THis morning i did a reboot on the device and at the Apple logo screen i noticed a stuck pixel. So in addition to the backlight bleed i also now have a stuck pixel. *sigh*

Question now is do i hold on to it and do a warranty swap once Apple sort themselves out (they are aware of the backlight bleed issue and are trying to change production accordingly apparently) or do i just cut my loss, return the device, and buy-in at a later date?

Hmmm...what to do.

I'm taking mine back this morning (spoke to Tesco CS) and going to at least try another one. If the replacement is the same then I'll just wait until a later date when they have hopefully sorted them out. I'd hate to think I was being fussy, but it really is awful compared to my first gen.

EDIT: Well, I'm not now as they have no stock again! Credit to Tesco though, I called them up and they have arranged a swap out when they get more in stock. I get to use this one for now, just need to find a case to keep it safe in the meantime! Anyone know where I can pick up a case that will protect the back in the UK? I'm struggling to find one! Cheers.

eBaey have got cheap silicone cases for the back just search for "ipad 2nd case" and you should find a few.

Cheers. I got the iLuv gel one in the end I saw in another thread. Looks pretty good quality. I got it at the place below for a reasonable price. Never used them before but they have a good range of cases that seem pretty good compared to a lot I've seen.

Did you order it online then? Or will they be selling them in store there?

I live near Rainham Tesco so might check it out tomorrow.

Order has been sitting with status of "At warehouse - dispatching soon" all day but is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. What do you think, any chance of seeing it before the weekend?

Spoke with Tesco and while the status is still showing as being at the warehouse, it was picked and shipped earlier on today, so still on schedule to be here tomorrow.

Placed my Tesco Direct order this morning and it's now showing as dispatched. Have been issued a tracking number and everything. Lucky me.

I got my mitts on a Black 64Gb Wi Fi today.... Should be at my local store on Friday! At last :)
Tesco are by far the best retailer at the moment for iPads... AND with the discounts. Awesome :)
