Geez, from the length and detail of this list, one would think the iPad is a worthless piece of trash. And not many items on this list are unreasonable; they are fairly basic and things one should expect the iPad already had. Ironically, if Blackberry or Dell or whatever came out with an identical (everything completely identical except for iOS), everyone would be bashing it for its lack of function.

Output iPad to HDTVs/Apple TV scaled or downconverted to display at 1080p either OTA/Wirelessly or via a mini-HDMI port or a Dock Connector to VGA adapter

Although I think this is an excellent idea, it will never happen. There is a reason Apple introduced the ATV and AirPlay. Apple doesn't want you to be able to buy a $5 cable to directly hook up the iPad to your HDTV. Apple wants you to pay them $99 to have this ability instead.

playing flash videos would be nice. Only thing holding me back from getting an ipad and instead shopping android. A lot of the sites I go to (no, not just porn) have flash and one of the main reason I want a tablet is so I can browse the internet on the couch watching tv or in bed at night without having to get my laptop.

I agree. It's insane how much basic functionality is lacking from the iPad. Though not quite as insane as the fanboys that block out their ears and scream la la la anytime someone points this out.

The iPad is a great device, but it absolutely is lacking some basic functions that should be expected of a device like this (for example, getting a photo or video on to it without having to first put it on a pc and then sync with itunes).

I posted this in another thread, but I think most of Ipads short comings are software related.

Personally I find iOS kind of annoying compared to Android. Yes ios has more polish(which has NOTHING to do with how the device functions), yes the Iphone 4 is a sleek, "pretty" device(Which has NOTHING to do with function)... but iOs bothers the crap out of me on alot of things...

The fact that I need to input a password for every app I download, I can see the requirement on paid apps, but for free ones?? annoying

The fact that I have to be bounce out of the app store to see the app downlaoding on my home scree, who the f cares?? What if I want to download multiple apps, i have to go back and forth back and forth... its stupid.

The fact that there is no back button. One of the most annoying features... I am in my email app, then I want to open a link in youtube, youtube opens, I am done watching my video now i have to close the app and reopen email if I want to reply. If I had a back button, it would save me time. ANNOYING

The fact that most app settings are not independent to apps... I mean seriously?

Notifications, not gonna beat a dead horse, but they are AWFUL.

no 3rd party app to app intergration...

The fact that most app settings are not independent to apps... I mean seriously?

This is up to the developer of the app. Most apps I have use in-app settings. Some have both in-app settings and settings in the Settings App.

There is some functionality missing from the iPad; however for me and I think a lot of people the fact that it's a tablet that actually works in the real world easily out weights the disadvantages. I will happily say that the iPad is the best "casual" computer I've ever used.

Beside it you're prepared to accept that things won't work exactly as they do on the desktop the iPad is pretty flexible. Take photos, there are loads of ways of getting photos onto an iPad that don't involve syncing with iTunes. You can save photos that you receive in email or view in the browser, you can place them onto a cloud based service like Dropbox, you can transfer them across from an iPhone or finally you could buy the Camera Connection Kit and connect your camera directly. Now you could argue that the CCK ports should have been built in and that's reasonable, however the option is there and it's not expensive.

Interesting thread.

11" 2048 x 1536 Retina Display screen (pictured above)
Please! But don't give one crap about Super AMOLED.

Remove the home button entirely (pictured above) and switch to a three/four finger pinch in gesture to exit apps.
Apple should only consider such a thing when they have a truly intuitive way to navigate without it. I cannot imagine through any stretch of the mind how four or five-finger gestures could solve this problem. Keep in mind that anyone should be able to pick up the device and use it. Good luck with that idea...

The iPad is a touch-based device. We navigate it with our fingers. I would rather deal with the glare (no big deal at all when handling a device which can be repositioned so easily) than deal with more fingerprint smudges and a more difficult cleanup.

Inductive Charging and if viable, (the following are all probably unrealistic) a touch sensitive back for gesture and gaming functions akin to the PSP2, or a glass-free 3D screen akin to the Nintendo 3DS (that uses a proximity sensor to know when to auto-switch to 2D) or a Solar panel to extend battery life,
Fun and gimmicky, but not really important. 3D is trash/gimmicky. I would prefer they completely leave it out to focus value on other hardware in the device. Leave it to the competitors as something to play with in order to differentiate.

A filesystem is my biggest want for the next iOS.

This completely misunderstands what makes the iPad successful. Rather, we want to see it evolve in such a way that detaches from the archaic idea of a file system. Some tech folk don't like this—they want their iPad to be more like a computer—and these are exactly the same sort of ideas that allowed Apple to walk right into this market years later and pluck it out from under their noses.

Improved notifications,
Definitely. Apple should improve the notification system.

OTA/Wireless iTunes and Syncing - file-soup solution allowing apps to push and pull files from a cloud-synced file-collection
Wireless iTunes syncing seems a little gimmicky until we have a wireless solution which makes it work well. Currently we just get to enjoy wasting more time (due to slower transmission speeds) and a fair battery drain to go along with it. Definitely a great idea when the time comes. I would love to see something like Dropbox standardized.

Higher contrast ratio and much lower minimum brightness
Higher contrast ratio would be nice, but isn't really necessary at all. The iPad has a nice screen (resolution aside). Lower minimum brightness would be a plus.

Wireless Hotspots without Jailbreaking
Probably coming, with associated fees.

Improved/More Voice Commands
Yes.

Let us download files from Safari(or other apps) and store them on the phone in a centralized location
I have a feeling Apple knows that some kind of file storage system is desired and appropriate. I'll wager they are holding off—that they will continue to hold off—until they can find a truly elegant way of doing it. They'll want to get it right the first time.

Apple, let us organize the 100+ photos and videos on our iPads into separate folders/albums. Add a file system for organizing and reordering videos, music, photos (into albums), and documents (PDF, DOC, PAGES), [...]

Again, overlooks what made the device successful. I would like Apple to come up with elegant solutions to many of these problems over time. It would be nice for the iPad to fully evolve as a solution which doesn't need a PC to help with various key tasks (like organization). But it is best if they don't rush and take shortcuts by throwing back to tired old principles.

The ability to download themes from the app store.
Won't ever happen. Branding is too important.

Automatically downclock the iPad during menial tasks and preserve battery life
It isn't like the iPad uses all of its CPU/GPU's power for every task. There is always room for improvement in power management, but this is something these devices already do rather well.

Multiple Profiles based on gps location (at work vs. home), time, what BT device connected etc.
There is potential here. One fun idea that went through the news is multiple profiles based on faces. I was pretty excited about that.

A Button to kill all multitasking apps at once to instantly free up RAM. It’s ridiculous that there is no way to close an app without saving its state.
No. Why? You don't understand how 'multitasking' in iOS works. People are control freaks about this due to their computer backgrounds. If anything, Apple should continue to refine the system they have in place until, perhaps, one day when hardware is so powerful that such things are not necessary.

Let us delete/hide the built in stocks and youtube (and other) apps, so that we can replace youtube app with m.youtube.com web app (looks and works a lot better).
I lose no sleep over this—they're easy enough to stash away in a folder—but it would be a nice option.

Integrate a way to interact with a printer to print out emails, photos, pdfs and other documents, ...
In time they should focus on some of these things (some sooner than others, such as refining printing), but there are far more solutions to devise. Third-party apps pick up the slack where needed.

GPS built in, comparable to Andriod phones at least
Would be terrific. Apple needs to own the right technology.

Better Autocorrect + Customizable Dictionary - The iPad has the worst auto-correct system ever devised by man. It doesn’t learn from habits, which means I have to reject the same changes repeatedly, forever. I also can’t add words. And speaking of the address book, I better not have any contacts prefaced with “Mr.” If I do, I need to be prepared to constantly reject an unwanted change every time I type the word “me”.
You are just wrong here. So very wrong. An editable dictionary would be nice (it can learn, by the way) and it should be continually improved. The best way to use their terrific auto-correct system is to use proper English* and to either not think about how it works, or to understand sincerely how it works. *I understand it is apparently a pain in the ass in some languages.

Better Youtube - Youtube functions very poorly on the iPadThe quality is horrendous and slow, especially over 3G.
The quality is terrific relative to the comparable Flash offering. The speed, however, is a note of interest. I have observed that Google offers up the H.264 video at considerably slower speeds than the Flash videos. You can observe this on your computer as well by using an extension for Safari that enables the H.264 video. I sincerely suspect that Google may do this intentionally.

Support in the native iPad video player for all the codecs that VLC supports
Far more important priorities, and no they shouldn't. Better uses of ongoing resources exist. Allow the tech nuts who want all those weird little video formats, but who cannot be bothered to re-encode them, to use whatever tech nut app they want to use.

Additional buttons on the multitasking launch bar and revamped UI to switch between apps that provide a quicker way to shut off bluetooth, wifi, brightness and enable/disable airplane mode. If I want to save some precious battery life and disable wifi when I’m not using it, it takes five taps. Compare that to Android, where disabling wifi takes a single tap on a widget.
KISS.

Facetime over 3G/4G and letting us make video calls to non-iOS devices
Custom SMS, MMS, email and other custom alert sounds
Protect or hide apps (for privacy without having to lock my entire phone)
Unlimited Safari Tabs (current limit is eight)
Facetime over 3G should happen as networks evolve.
Protect or hide apps? Ehh... maybe a password system or something for business... Apple really doesn't need to go out of their way to hide someone's porn apps from their wives.
Unlimited Safari Tabs is a very bad idea.

Touch-sensitive bezel is an interesting idea, but kind of difficult to implement. You could have a nice volume scaler on the bezel, but it would have to have an unlock-square to avoid inadvertent hits. Much the same would be the case with the home button: to protect it, you would end up making it difficult to use.

There is some talk of iOS 5 having a multi-finger pinch to exit an app, which makes sense enough, though then you have to figure out how to call up the controls bar. As far as needing a physical button, you could do some sort of keying thing with a dock port device, or something like that, when you need to force a clean start or whatever.

The bezel solution is simple and elegant: a quarter-inch edge raised about 1~2mm from the glass and given the right outward taper would be enough to reduce the need for so much bezel (3mm on 3 sides would probably be plenty) — taking away that much glass, in favor of aluminium or plastic, would greatly improve the weight.

Yes, I want a better way to manage my files. One that is more familiar to me. But I also want iCode, so I can work on programming directly on the iPad. I think the lion's share of iPad users are just fine without that, and it is hard for the quasi-nerds to get that. Still, it is frustrating that Apple refuses to offer a legitmate alternative to the JB so that those of us who can get more out of the device can get more out of it (I imagine a fee JB, so that I could not causually JB my mom's iPad and render it difficult or unusable to her).

At some point, this thing will mature beyond needing a host. More than anything else, that is what Apple needs to address.

dont you realize by now apple doesn't need to add any innovations because the fanboys will buy anything they release, even if it's worse. An example of this is the new nano. They add one "innovation" per generation so that they have you hooked for 4-5 generations.

There isn't a single thing on that list that I want MORE than freaking arrow keys for my keyboard!!!!!!! PLEASE??????

Now, having said that, I would pay more for a better device. I have spent a lot of money on laptops over the years...and to have a true tablet computer that is capable of doing everything that it could...and should, I would spare no expense.

It´s funny how EVERYONE wanted a tablet computer from Apple, before the iPad was released.

After the release EVERYONE was disappointed and said "iPad sucks and it´s just a big iPod Touch, a toy, etc...".

Now (almost) EVERYONE is saying "we didn´t want a tablet computer anyways, crippled toys are great!".

That´s how Apple brainwashing works! :p

Here´s the future scenario:

Now (almost) EVERYONE is saying that "iPad with mobile phone OS is great and tablet computers doesn´t make sense at all!".

Apple will release a tablet computer and EVERYONE will say that "tablet computers are great!".

:D

I´m glad I´m not so easily brainwashed although I´m a fan of Apple products.

Like it how you are saying, "everyone"! iPhone is a mini-tablet!! iPod touch is a mini-tablet!! Right size for a phone or a portable PDA, if you will. Ever heard of that?? iPhone,iPod and iPad are multi-touch tablets!! Size matters for a variety of different applications and usages.

Guess, you envy apple fanboys! What have you bought lately?

Hopefully something more useful than a Nano. :p

Seriously, why buy a Nano when an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch does so much more.

Exactly, quite a few things in the OP, like being able to drag and drop files into it directly, are things that it absoultely should be able to do.

Well, I'm one who haven't voted in the poll. As some posters have mentioned already, neither of the two options represent my position. I don't think the iPad is so perfect it needs no improvements, but there's quite a lot of things in your list of "needed" fixes I don't agree with.

I sent this thread to Steve Jobs. Laughter is the best medicine after all.

agreed. It might be fun to go to the Movies and see Bolt in 3D.. but other than that, it should stay in the theater.

I don't know, I think glass free 3D will be great for gaming, Nintendo is counting on that.

I don't think it's a realistic option right now though, not till the screen tech advances further.

With all the rumors about these features all showing up in the iOS 5, how many do you expect will migrate over to the iPad?
