My thoughts are that I'm thinking of the pink modern buckle, but I have the same concerns that you have.
I guess it can be treated with leather spray, but I really wish that the pink was the same as the pink gray color of the modern buckle that's packaged with the rose gold watch. It's a bit darker and looks like more of a neutral.
I think I'm going to buy the pink anyway, but if I get it and it looks too light, I may just have to swap it.
Decisions, decisions. When I voted in this poll, I thought I'd go for the black modern buckle, but that seems to be a "safe" choice and I'd like something fun.
My husband says that the brown is probably the most versatile. Maybe he's onto something. I like the midnight blue, but I was a bit concerned that that one may be less likely to pair well with all of my clothes than any of the other three.
A couple of interesting observations based on the poll so far...
1. The top %1 choose Apple Watch Edition.
2. It's roughly a 45%/55% split between the Aluminum and SS.
3. The top 1% of watches sold (Apple Watch Edition) will account for 30% of Apple Watch profits (assuming 40%, 60% and 90% margins for the three lines respectively).

That's because it's the best looking one for the price, especially for most of us who like the darker color. And the Space black is not an option because of the price. To me the AW sport space grey and the SS black, would look identical if they where to have the same sport black & link band. I have a feeling that the space grey is going to be the hottest seller out of all the AW's
Your husband may well be onto something, I am slightly considering the brown too. I guess a lot depends on how dark the midnight blue is, if it is very dark it will look strange against the black face. I am definitely confused on this one.
I will eventually get the Milanese loop for a different look but I want a leather strap to start and it's an expensive thing to regret later.
We'll have to compare notes after release! I swear, it's so tough to choose without seeing the actual object.

Wow, I have to admit that I'm a little surprised at exactly how popular the black sport model is. I mean out of 38 different models the 42mm version accounts for over 1/4 of all sales. When you include both sizes that accounts for over 1/3 of sales (out of 19 models). I can understand why, but it's still a bit shocking.
I voted for the 42mm black sport too, but honestly I'd love to have a color that pops out a little. It's just that it would be a challenge to wear the green or blue ALL the time. The sport model comes with 2 bands anyway, so if I could get a green/blue paired with a black/white that would be ideal. One for fun and one to fit in.
Edit: It appears that the latest revelation is that sport doesn't have 2 complete bands. Essentially comes with only 1 of the buckle part, and 2 for the band with the holes (a s/m and m/l). Oh well.
Maybe I'll get the white, because that color aluminum is more versatile...

It makes me wonder if Apple under estimated the interest in black. If the black SS was available with different bands at other price points (sport, leather, even black Milanese) Apple might have got a lot of people moving into SS from aluminum. As it is, they're probably leaving money on the table. There's a huge gap between the two black options right now.

Crazy. Apple really dropped the ball on this. How many of those 38% would have spent $300 more if there was a black stainless option at $700? The only other Black option at the moment is $700 more at $1100! Everyone loses, including Apple who's leaving money on the table.
Edit: and that poll has 6% buying the Edition!
These polls are useful as it gives a great insure in to market demand. I think I won't need to hit the panic button with my choice of SS Silver
Better make sure I have a very stable internet connect that morning when I pre-order then, as I want the Space Grey Aluminium 42mm and looks as if its going to be a BIGGGGG battle :/
Man I am feeling the same way about the SG sport it's going to be crazy come the 10th. My original plan was to go for the Space black SS, but man the price drove me to the similar in looks SG Sport. Could have OP for the SS but that's not the color I want.
I'm not sure who at Apple chose these colors for the bands but they seem to have leaned a bit heavily on loud candy colors for sport bands or unconventional shades for leather. Maybe that's what's popular in California but a lot of those colors wouldn't play well on the east coast and in office settings. I wish they would have thought to come up with some richer darker shades in leather and in the sport bands.

In my example, I really think the Black Stainless + Link Band is the closest fit to my style, but I can't justify the price. I will probably settle for space gray aluminum + black sport band (49% chance) or just skip 1st gen (49% chance). There is still a 2% chance I YOLO and get the black steel.
Similarly I'd love a rose gold for my wife, it'd look great on her. But I don't love her $17,000 worth.

Im torn between 42mm SS with Milanese Loop (699) or 42mm Sport with white band (399)
The sport w/ white band is more practical, cheaper, and lighter and goes with casual outfits and the gym and also can go with nicer clothes. The color also matches my iphone and rMBP and airport express. the aluminum with black screen is very "apple" imo.
the SS is flashy, shiny, "better" materials etc, but i feel that it would clash with casual clothes, would be a target when im walking at night or in a bad area, and its also probably heavy and invasive for exercise/gym. its also 300 dollars more. I also dont know how strong the magents on the loop are. but i really like the look of it and it was my original gut feeling decision on which one i want.

I would LIKE the 42mm yellow gold with blue classic buckle, but I am GETTING the 42mm stainless steel with milanese loop. Also purchasing a white sports band and a black classic buckle as additional bands
What's your second choice if you can't get the 42mm Space Gray? My second choice is to buy the 42mm Silver Aluminum and then buy a black Sport Band separately at launch or maybe a little down the road. I REALLY hope that Apple made enough 42mm Space Gray watches though, seeing as they make up almost 30% of all buyers.
