I'm assuming you've been capable of doing your job to this point, so what have you been using?

Good point - I have in the past had to put a Mac Pro on a tea trolley and wheel it to lectures. Kinda breaks down when I have to fly somewhere!

I do not know why people think the battery life is such an issue. I am never away from mains power for more than about an hour anyway, so this magical 7H battery life is utterly irrelevant. As is unibody case etc. I really think Apple are dreaming up marketing points and then persuading people that this sort of nonsense is actually important. I need sheer mobile math power and nothing else.

Looks like my thread got merged. Strictly speaking, I am not only not waiting for Arrandale but not waiting for Apple at all.

I love it when people call something irrelevant nonsense just because it's not important to them.

I don't need seven hours battery life myself but I'm often in situations where I need four or five, so a seven-hour battery would be very nice to have.

ahhhh...just bought the high end 13'' macbook pro off amazon. I've come to believe that refreshes aren't coming with the next month, and I really want to get rid of my 15'' 2007 mbp for something lighter, smaller, and less..uhhh..."distinguished". god forgive me

Generally speaking, it seems to me that one should buy a computer he thinks would fit his needs whenever he can afford it and not put off buying purely because something newer and, presumably, better is on the way. The problem is that we can't know WHEN something newer and better will show up. Having said that, however, although I am in the market for a 13 inch, I have decided to wait for Apple to refresh its MBP and MBA lineups before buying one. The reason is that my less than two year old 17 inch MBP will continue to be my primary machine even after I acquire a 13 inch (or at least I think it will). Thus, the decision to ignore my own usual advice and wait for the update this time is based on special circumstances.

In stark contrast to my decision to wait this time around, I bought my 17 inch MBP in 2008, despite it's being a discontinued model, because my five year old Powerbook G4 was showing its age and I wanted to be able to run Windows on a Mac. The machine I bought was more than sufficient for my purposes and I saved some money, to boot. That calculus, though, does not come into play this time around.

It seems to me that long time Mac users who have petulantly decided to buy a Windows only laptop because some of them now contain the i7 chip are, to put it gently, misguided. These days it is a simple thing for one to configure Vmware Fusion to run any Windows app you chose from the OS X Dock, without ever having to look at the Windows desktop. The reason escapes me as to why anybody would give up the best of both OS X and Windows and sentence themselves to Windows alone just because they are mad at Apple. Yikes!

I done waiting, i sold my 2007 white macbook back in November. It been 4 month, no update. So i decide to order HP Envy last week, i got it on friday. I am happy now.:)

Heh. Try using that feature (Unity) for a real day's work and get back to me.

I've discovered that VMware is stable as long as you stay away from most of its features.

oh really!? It this attitude that hampers innovation, social change and basically moving the human race forward, thanks !

If we all thought the way you do, we'd still be arguing over crappy laptops with no battery...

So he should wait to buy a computer until there is nothing more anyone can add to them? Silly. If we all thought the way you do, we'd still be carving in stone and using carrier pigeons.

Yeah a thread where I belong!!! I bought mine in November (see sig) and am happy to be avoiding all of this. I wouldve waited but i wont use the power, the advantage wouldve been to have something that would become obsolete less quickly, but in 3 - 4 years when apple makes a new MBP (I mean design wise) this one should be still kicking, and ill want that new one anyway.

That's why I caved and ordered a current MB (not pro) on Thursday. I will enjoy it immensely and then upgrade to a MBP when Apple reveals "big things" in the future. It's more than enough for my needs right now. No sense in paying extra for things I don't need when I'll upgrade in the future anyway.

I agree. It seems people are upset with apple cuz they haven't annouced anything as yet but it's not like if the majority of other manufacturers have been releasing products to compete. Most of the new laptops can't be shipped now anyway. People are acting like apple are 2 months behind others.

Exactly. Correct me if I am wrong, but the machines available NOW aren't using Arrandale. And the ones that are don't ship until mid March. So just becuase you pre-ordered your fancy new tech, you're still waiting. And as far as re-sale value is concerned, I'm still seeing 2007 MBs going on eBay for $600-800. I've yet to have a PC laptop last that long, let along being able to sell it.

And am I the only one who remembers those articles stating that Apple was skipping Arrandale all together? Obviously they could have been speculation, but I believe they were based on actual reports from Apple. There's a chance those of you "waiting" will be doing so for a LONG time (at least for Apple). And it seems that even those waiting would still be upgrading what they have now with the current models.
These are just my thoughts on the subject.

I got tired of waiting over a month ago... ordered my 13" MBP and been unbelievably happy every since.

Once the new ones come out, we'll see 100's of threads titled something like "2010 MBP problem with <insert problem>" No thanks... mines a stable 2009 model :)

I'm not waiting for the new MBP anymore as well.

I'm going for the VAIO Z. I used the new Win7 and I must say its really fast.

Not necessarily. But none really knows.

Still if you ever feel your computer's performance becomes inadequate, there are plenty of things to do. With 8GB of RAM and an SSD, my 2.26 Macbook feels faster than my E8400 desktop with 4GB of RAM.

Extra CPU power is nice to have. But having a computer when you need it is nicer.

Just picked up the MB991 for a killer price with the 3yr accidental damage coverage from BB. Couldn't be happier...

I'm holding out until the 16th, and if nothing by then, I think I'll upgrade my current windows laptop and purchase an iMac 27" with the i7 processor; then buy a MBP sometime toward the end of summer or beginning of fall.

i bought a 15" mbp with antiglare yesterday, does that mean im NOT WAITING for arrandale?

High Five! I did the same thing. After about a month of waiting and checking these forums and loosing my sanity over waiting for a refresh I finally cracked and got a low end 15"ag on friday when there was a flood of refurbs (they only lasted about an hour before they were all snatched up hehe).

I'm happier already and I haven't even received my mbp in the mail yet!

If the new Sony Z comes out first I will get it. Then I won't need Boot Camp to put any further strain on my infamous 8600M GPU which some say can fail at any time in my 2007 MBP 15".

I just upgraded my MBP 17 inch Santa Rosa's (late 2007) RAM from 2 to 6 gig of RAM. Because I run Windows 7 in a VMware Fusion virtual machine, I can now leave several Windows apps and several OS X apps open in the MBP's dock at the time and use them all seamlessly with good speed. Somehow, i don't think a Sony Z would do that for me.

i got tired of waiting, so carefully evaluated my uses and decided to pick up a macbook (just surf the net, sync the iPhone, and app development).

Doesn't hurt that my 2 PCs decided to die as well, so I really had no choice as well.

Feels better that I got a store discount and got the thing for $400.

I pound on my MBP 17 inch with 6 gig of RAM pretty much all day most days. At the moment, I have 2 Safari pages open, plus Mail, iCal, Address Book, MS Word for OS X, MS Excel for OS X, Quicken 2010 for Windows, and Internet Explorer 8 for Windows. I use them all interchangeably and frequently, with acceptable speed. VMware Fusion 3 is operating in Unity mode. I knew better than to even try doing what I am doing now when i had only 2 gig of RAM. With 6 gig of RAM, though, it's a piece of cake. Trust me on this. There, I got back to you.:)

Bought a 13" MBP to complement my 27" iMac at the house. I have to say it's a nice little machine! For surfing, email and light Aperture work it's doing quite well.

I'm straddling the fence (giggity). I don't know if I can be bothered to hold out.

Am I welcome on this thread? :D
